Who Invented Muddy Buddies

Muddy Buddies aka Puppy Chow WITHOUT Peanut Butter

If youre in the muddy buddies camp, you can thank General Mills. They developed and packaged their recipe for sale in 2009. How they came up with the name is beyond me, but if YOU know, let me know in the comments below!

Whatever the name is, puppy chow and muddy buddies are made of the same basic ingredients of cereal, peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar.

What Is A Muddy Buddy

Whether you call this snack Muddy Buddies or puppy chow , this treat is the BEST! Muddy Buddies are a sweet, crunchy cereal snack mix made with Chex® cereal, peanut butter, chocolate, butter, vanilla, salt, and powdered sugar. And to make it even better, there is no baking required!

This treat is frequently called puppy chow because of the close resemblance to dog food. So, while theyre not the most attractive-looking treat, youll be hooked from the first bite! Just make sure you dont actually feed your dog this snack. Pets and chocolate do not mix.

Now that were well-versed in the term, lets talk about making this delicious snack mix!

Ingredient Muddy Buddies With Kit Kats

It can totally be done! All you have to do is add a little oil when youre melting the chocolate and itll be soft enough not to make the Chex cereal hard when the chocolate hardens. Sometimes I want a peanut-free snack and these Kit Kat Muddy Buddies are the perfect muddy buddies flavor.

I decided to make these because I found Kit Kat Snack Size Bars on sale. You all know how much Jordan loves her Kit Kats, right? A few bags went into my cart because I knew, at some point, Id find something to make with them. Kit Kat Muddy Buddies were just an obvious choice.

Have you ever heard of Muddy Buddies being called Puppy Chow? Theyre also called Puppy Chow because it kind of resembles dog food! I think that the term puppy chow is a midwestern tradition, whereas we on the west coast call them Muddy Buddies or Chocolate Chex Mix.

Lets Make Muddy Buddies

10 Best Muddy Buddies Without Peanut Butter Recipes

Since its basically just a melt-and-stir recipe, muddy buddies come together in minutes. Heres how you do it.

  • Get the Cereal Ready. To start, get out a big mixing bowl, and pour the dry cereal into it. Alternatively, divide the cereal between two big zip-top bags.
  • Make the Chocolate Sauce. Get a medium saucepan with an inch or two of water heating on the stove, to a steady simmer. Place the chocolate chunks, peanut butter, and regular butter in a large, heat proof mixing bowl. Set the bowl on top of the saucepan, turn the heat to low, and stir. Once the ingredients are melted and blended together, mix in the sea salt and vanilla.
  • Coat the Cereal in the Chocolate Sauce. Pour the chocolate mixture over the cereal, and stir gently with a spatula to coat.
  • Coat the Mixture with Powdered Sugar. Finally, dump in the powdered sugar, and toss to coat.
  • Enjoy!

    The Best Muddy Buddies Recipe

Whether you call it muddy buddies or puppy chow, this classic is always guaranteed to be a crowd favorite. Rice Chex cereal is coated with a combination of melted chocolate and peanut butter, then tossed in powdered sugar for the ultimate easy sweet snack.

The first time I heard about this recipe, it was referred to as puppy chow and I absolutely thought that people were talking about a homemade dog food snack. I soon found out that it was an alternative name for what is more commonly known as Muddy Buddies a super quick recipe made with Rice Chex cereal. Traditionally, the cereal is coated with a melted mixture of chocolate chips, butter, peanut butter, and vanilla extract, then dusted with powdered sugar. Basically, its one of the most addicting snacks youll ever make. The fact that it can be thrown together in just 15 minutes is both wonderful and dangerous. If you ask me, its all sorts of wonderful.

Ive tinkered with the recipe over the years, eliminating the butter from the chocolate and peanut butter coating, upping the peanut butter, and adjusting the powdered sugar and cereal amounts to make the most chocolatey and peanut buttery version that clumps up wonderfully and is coated in a nice thick layer of powdered sugar without using too much.

Basically, this version is muddy buddy perfection and I hope youll love it as much as I do!

Homemade Vs Store Bought Muddy Buddies

Not only is it way cheaper to make your own at home, homemade Muddy Buddies just tastes so much better! The store bought stuff can be stale, less flavorful, and just not as tasty. Additionally, when you make it at home, you can make a greater volume for much less cost. Youre also in control of the ingredients you add, making it fresher, and much tastier!

    Ingredients For Muddy Buddies

I always have all these ingredients on hand except for the Chex. Because anytime I buy Chex, my husband eats it as an after dessert snack nearly every night while we Netflix. Hes unstoppable!! Sometimes I actually hide the box from him. Heres everything you need:

    • salted butter
    • peanut butter
    • kosher salt
    • vanilla
    • Rice Chex cereal. Corn is a close second choice.
    • powdered sugar

How To Make Muddy Buddy Bites

Peanut Butter MUDDY BUDDIES | Simple DIY Demonstation

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the peanut butter, butter and vanilla until well combined. Add the cereal and beat on low speed until just combined. Then turn the mixer to medium-high speed and beat the mixture until the cereal is thoroughly crushed. This will take several minutes.

Add 1 cup powdered sugar and beat at low speed until just combined and then on medium speed until well combined. Mixture should be thick and creamy enough to roll into balls.

Using a medium cookie scoop, scoop about 2 tablespoons of the mixture at a time and form into balls. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. You should get about 28 balls out of the mixture. Put the balls in the freezer for 10 minutes or the refrigerator for about 20 minutes to allow them to set.

Place the remaining ½ cup powdered sugar in a large resealable baggie and add the balls to the bag. Seal the bag and gently toss the balls in the powdered sugar until they are all coated evenly. Remove one bite at a time from the bag and place it back on the parchment-lined baking sheet, reforming them into ball shapes, if necessary.

Serve immediately or transfer to an airtight container and store at room temperature or in the refrigerator. We love eating them chilled!

    Peanut Butter Options And Substitutions

Creamy peanut butter is the number one option for muddy buddies. I prefer brands like Jif and Skippy avoid natural-style peanut butter that has oil separation, as it will be too oily for this recipe. You can use chunky peanut butter, as well, for an extra, well, crunch.

If you need a peanut-free substitution, these will work:

    • Almond butter
    • Nutella for extra chocolate!

You can also use Kit Kats to make Kit Kat Fudge or Kit Kat Cookies!

    Servings In Keto Muddy Buddies

This recipe yields 15 servings, each of which is about 1/3 cup.

Each serving is 3g net carbs, as noted below. I assure you that 1/3 cup is plenty this stuff is so sweet that you dont need a lot to be satisfied. However, if you find yourself dying for more servings, only 3g net carbs per servings gives you enough wiggle room to have 2 or maybe even 3 servings. No judgment from me. As a comparison, regular Puppy Chow is 29g net carbs per serving!

    Tips For Making Puppy Chow

There are SO many recipes for puppy chow, but I promise you, my recipe is the best, because of these tips and tricks.

  • Use the whole box of cereal. Most recipes call for 9 cups of cereal, leaving 2 cups left in the box. What the heck are you supposed to do with 2 cups of chex?! Dont do that. Use the whole box of cereal.
  • Use the whole bag of chocolate chips. More is more in this recipe. Just throw the whole bag in.
  • Use more powdered sugar than you think necessary. The cereal should be COMPLETELY coated in white.
  • Dont over mix. Chunks are the best part. Just trust me on this one.

Mix the peanut butter, protein powder, honey and vanilla together until smooth. Add the Rice Chex and smash with a spoon, stirring and smashing until most of the cereal is broken and everything is mixed well.

Use a cookie scoop to scoop out tablespoonfuls of the mixture and roll them between your hands to form balls. Sprinkle a little powdered sugar on top if desired.

Place the chocolate chips in a small glass bowl and microwave for 45 seconds. Stir and then microwave for another 30 seconds. Stir until smooth. If the chocolate isnt fully melted, microwave for another 15 seconds and then continue stirring. Place the melted chocolate in a small ziplock bag and snip a tiny hole in the corner. Squeeze the chocolate out as a drizzle over each cookie ball. Eat immediately, or store in the refrigerator or store at room temperature until ready to eat.

    Coconut Oil Muddy Buddies

Easy muddy buddy aka puppy chow recipe using dark chocolate and without ...

These Coconut Oil Muddy Buddies are so easy, quick and make the perfect snack. Crunchy, sweet, full of chocolate and peanut butter and irresistible.

I grew up on Muddy Buddies and they are definitely a favorite of mine. Looking back I think one of the reasons my mom made them so often was because how easy they are. No oven or stove needed- just 1 minute of microwaving and some stirring. I have made them more times than I can count, but this is the first time making them with coconut oil and I love how they turned out!

The recipe on the Chex box is good, but I must say, this one is better. Why? Because with this recipe, every Chex square is completely covered in the chocolate/peanut butter mixture and completely covered in powdered sugar. That was one thing I didnt like about the original recipe- too many naked Chex I upped the chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar, guaranteeing every piece of cereal is covered and delicious.

Another thing I did different is I switched out the butter for Golden Barrel Coconut Oil and the butter is not missed at all! No, it does not make them taste like coconut, a question I often get when using coconut oil in place of butter. They taste like chocolate and peanut butter- just like the original. Making this easy switch makes them dairy free and vegan! I also made a batch with almond butter and it came out great. Im sure any other nut butter would work as well.

Dangerous tip: try them straight from the freezer. ADDICTING!

Why Is It Called Puppy Chow

It is named after the way this treat LOOKS.

I mean, it does kinnddaaa look like dog food…

But the phrase, “You eat with your eyes first” is totally overrated right?! So dig in! You won’t regret it!

Read more about the history of puppy chow!

Regardless of the name, it is an American snack that has been around for a long time. The origin in unknown…but honestly, who cares?! Whoever created the original recipe idea is genius!

It is such a fun, easy AND irresistible snack made using either Chex or Crispix cereal. And BEST OF ALL? It only takes 5 minutes to whip up!!!

The ‘classic’ Muddy Buddy recipe uses melted chocolate with peanut butter, butter, and vanilla extract. This drool-worth mixture is then poured all over the cereal and finally tossed in powdered sugar until it forms a nice soft shell.

I mean, how can you go wrong?

BUT because there are thousands of the same recipe out there, I wanted to try a fun twist on the famous puppy chow and substitute the powdered sugar with vanilla instant pudding mix and use NO peanut butter!

You won’t be able to stop snacking on these! I promise.
