Apple Cider Hot Toddy – Lynn’s Recipes

First, combine the cider, juices and spices in a pot on the stovetop and heat over medium high heat. Once it comes to a boil, lower the heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes to combine all of the flavors. Take the mixture off of the heat and stir in the bourbon and honey.

Serve these drinks warm, garnished with a cinnamon stick, or serve them cold over ice, garnished with fresh apple slices!

What Makes Sagamore Spirit Different

  • Tantalizing aroma this whiskey gives you a big old hug with just one sniff with complex and captivating aromas of warm cinnamon, vanilla bean, honey, and nutmeg.
  • Refined palate Smooth mouth-feel, with caramel and molasses up front and peppery baking spices on the end.
  • Rich color Beautiful bonfire glow with amber with gold undertones.
  • Distinctive Finish A refreshing and zesty rye spiciness without making the pucker face.

Whiskey is one of those spirits that is inherently warming and what designates rye whiskey from say a bourbon, is that it is made from a mash of at least 51% rye grain.

Mash is a liquid created by adding hot water to something to create fermentable sugar from the starches.

Rye is a grass that is a member of the wheat family and closely related to barley. It can be processed into grain for things like whiskey or used as a cover crop or a forage crop for livestock.

When it is harvested as a grain, it is used in things like rye flour to then be used in bread and crackers and it can also then be used to make beer, some vodkas, some whiskey, and obviously rye whiskey.

To be 100% honest, I am not the cocktail type. I can generally be found ordering a glass of wine or a nice sour beer. But this Spiced Whiskey and other cocktails made from Sagamore arent too sweet and also not too liquery.

Balanced and great for sipping, which makes them right up my alley and the perfect party cocktail.

A Hot Toddy As A Cold Remedy

OK. I’m not a doctor, so I honestly I can’t say whether a hot toddy will cure a cold. But, a lot of people swear by drinking hot toddies when they have a cold.

I think we can all agree that drinking hot fluids, citrus, and maybe even honey can help a lot when we are sick.

But the whiskey? That’s controversial. It might help you relax a bit and some claim that it can work as a decongestant, but there’s conflicting information out there about whether it helps or not.

We recommend asking your doctor if you’re concerned about drinking a hot toddy while being sick.

Not only is this Hot Apple Cider recipe seriously easy, its also quintessentially autumn and winter. Hot spiced apple cider looks cozy. It tastes cozy. It makes the entire house smell like a palace of coziness.

I make my spiced apple cider one of two ways: In the Crock Pot or on the stovetop. I have to say I prefer the slow cooker method over stovetop just because its so easy to just pour everything in, walk away, and come back in four hours to cider goodness. Plus, you can just switch it over to the warm setting and have hot apple cider on the ready all glorious evening long. Perfect for when you have company over, when youre busy decorating the Christmas tree, or you just want a steady stream of hot apple cider at the ready.

Greet Guests With A Drink

Cook With Me | Hot Apple Cider Buttered Whisky

While there are a lot of little touches that I add to our parties, my favorite is a focus on the drinks. Drinks are usually the first thing you offer to guests when they arrive so having something special to serve lets everyone know from the beginning that its going to be a magical evening.

The other reason that I like to make a big deal about the drinks is because of how I feel when Im a guest. Having something in my hand, something to raise to my mouth, gives me something to do if I dont yet feel comfortable or dont really know the other guests. If the drink in my hand is pretty or unique in some way, it gives me something on which to compliment the host or something to spark a conversation with a stranger, What a great idea for a drink! Its delicious. Dont you just love sipping on a blah blah blah?

When it comes to Thanksgiving, and the holiday season generally, I often put my mark on the event with a warm drink. How nice is it to come in from the cold and be welcomed with something to really take the chill off?

What Alcohol Is Good With Apple Cider

When it comes to spiking apple cider, we tend to opt for dark spirits like whiskey, bourbon and rum.

Whiskey or bourbon and apple cider is a classic flavor combination, and whiskey is often the most recommended spirit when it comes to making an alcoholic apple cider cocktail. Whiskey or bourbon also pairs well with fall and winter warming spices that are often found in hot apple cider recipes like cinnamon and cloves.

Dark rum is also a popular choice for spiking apple cider and could certainly be used in this recipe in lieu of whiskey or bourbon. Make sure you are using dark rum because the flavors will complement those of the spices in the cider.

And a good, but more unexpected, spirit pairing for apple cider is vodka. Because vodka doesnt add a ton of flavor when adding it to a cider cocktail, consider increasing the spices and maybe adding some ginger for an extra kick.

What Kind Of Liquor To Use In Hot Toddies

Hot toddies are traditionally made with whiskey but many recipes call for brandy instead. You can also use spiced rum or even cognac in a hot toddy, if that’s more your speed. Brown liquor is generally of choice for a toddy recipe but I’ve also seen them made with vodka . Brown liquor also pairs better with apple cider so it’s a perfect fit.

Cheers to what’s left of fall and sipping spiced apple cider hot toddies with whiskey through the remainder of the season. I hope you enjoy this hot apple cider cocktail. Sharing is caring so be sure to pin this recipe . Thanks for reading!

Why You Warm Your Mug

Bourbon Spiked Hot Apple Cider

One of the reasons warm drinks are so comforting to me is the action of holding the hot mug between my hands. Its almost as if your hands are getting hug. To make and keep the mug as warm as possible, be sure to heat the mug up prior to adding in the warm contents of the cocktail.

To do this at home I either add hot water from the tea kettle and let it set while Im making the cocktail in another container. Or, I put the mug filled with water into the microwave for a minute or two, just enough to heat up the water, but not enough for a full boil.

If you create the drink and put it into a cold mug, the cocktail will lose a good bit of its heat in the first few minutes heating up the mug. Let the mug do the work of keeping it warm by heating it first.

  • My favorite part about this spiced apple cider recipe is the orange. What Spirit To Go With Apple Cider Hot Toddy

An apple cider hot toddy is mostly made with whiskey, but you can make it with almost anything tequila, gin, rum, or bourbon.

Bourbon, with its rounded balance of sweet tones and spices particularly compliments the apple cider. Tequila, on the other hand, provides sugary flavors followed by a note of citrus, making for an amazing apple cider cocktail.

Vodka is another great alternative. As it turns out, vodka gives the drink a twist for a lighter version but the final result is still as flavorful as the original. If you like Scotch, be sure to choose a variation that is no more than slightly smoky. Anything with an intense scent will overpower the other elements flavors.

Surprisingly, the choice of liquor isnt the biggest concern. What does matter is the balance of flavor, texture, aromatics, and perhaps most importantly your preference. The best spirit in your perfect hot toddy is the one you have to hand.

Serve It In A Punch Bowl

Making this apple cider whiskey cocktail in a punch bowl is a fun way to serve it at a fall dinner party or on Thanksgiving or Christmas. It looks festive and allows everyone to get a refill anytime without having to ask the host.

If you get half a gallon of apple cider you can make about 12 cocktails . Feel free to adapt the quantities based on the number of servings you need.

I recommend using a middle-range bourbon for this recipe. The flavor will come through, however, because its going in a mixed drink I tend to stay away from the super-good-enjoy-it-on-its-own kind of stuff.

In our house, we like to use Bulleit Bourbon. Feel free to use whichever brand of bourbon you prefer if you have a preference.
