What If The Chicken Is Not Cooked

Chicken needs to reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit before safe to consume.

Once your cook time has elapsed and pressure has been released, check the internal temperature of your chicken breast. If less than 160 degrees, place the lid back on the pressure cooker and cook for an additional 2-5 minutes on high pressure.

If the chicken has reached 160 degrees, it will reach 165 degrees as it rests.

To cook Instant Pot chicken breast, you need to add one cup of cooking liquid to the stainless steel inner pot of your Instant Pot . You can use water, chicken stock, or one of the sauces that are included in the recipe card below.

Make sure that the liquid you use is a thin liquid as it must produce steam to bring the Instant Pot to pressure. For example, salsa, enchilada sauce, or barbecue sauce may be too thick to create enough steam, leading to a burn warning.

Add your chicken breasts right into the liquid, and put the lid on the Instant Pot and pressure cook for the appropriate time .

Tips To Perfectly Juicy Chicken

– Allow the chicken to be close to room temperature for cooking. Using chicken that is cold from the refrigerator usually ends up pink in the middle and often raw. Run cool water, not hot, over the chicken in a bowl with the packaging still on the chicken.

– When cooking a whole chicken. Place or point the chicken legs to the back of the oven. The chicken legs and thighs are done/cooked at a higher internal temperature. 170-180 / White meat 160-165

Once youve made your Instant Pot chicken breast, it should already be very tender. If the cooking time is right, it will be pretty easy to shred it. This is similar to a slow cooker method.

Of course, how long to cook chicken breast in a pressure cooker will vary depending on how big your chicken breasts are. This recipe is based on a typical 6-8 ounce size. If yours are larger, you will need to increase the time by a few minutes.

Getting the cook time right is important to be able to make shred chicken breast easily. If its too dry, it will be hard to shred. Obviously, you dont want to under cook it, either. To remove the guesswork for you, Ive repeatedly tested the pressure cooking times below for fresh and frozen chicken.

Other than the cook time, the pressure release mechanism will impact how easy it will be to shred your Instant Pot chicken. Natural release results in the most tender meat and the most effortless shredding, so use that if you can. At the very least, use the natural release for five minutes prior to using the quick release option.

After cooking, you can shred the chicken breast directly in the pressure cooker using two forks. Hold the piece of chicken steady with one fork, while pulling and tearing away the shredded pieces with the other fork. Repeat the process until all your chicken is shredded.

How Long Does It Take To Cook Frozen Chicken Breasts In The Instant Pot

The process will be the same as raw chicken, but when cooking frozen chicken you will want to add another 2-3 minutes to the cooking time, as well as do a natural release of 10 minutes.

After the 10 minutes of natural release is done then finish with a quick release.

When its all said and done, the frozen chicken will take about 40-45 minutes to cook from start to finish.

  • Place inner pot into the instant pot and place the trivet in the bottom.
  • Add 1 cup of liquid to the instant pot .
  • Place chicken breasts on top of the trivet in a single layer.
  • Add salt and pepper or desired seasonings.
  • Secure lid and make sure the vent is set to sealed. Pressure cook on high for 8-10 minutes for fresh chicken breast, and 10-12 minutes for frozen chicken . Cook time stays the same no matter how much chicken you add to the pot the pot will just take longer to come to pressure.
  • Allow the pressure to release naturally for 5 minutes, then turn the valve to venting to release any remaining steam.
