Rum is a tropical alcoholic drink made from molasses and other byproducts of sugarcane. Although not everyone has a taste for rum, there is something supremely irresistible about the word rum when its appended to the words hot and buttered.

What do you immediately think of? How about the jingle of sleigh bells, cold snowy nights, blazing hot fires, and sugar-dusted cookies piled high on a plate?

Until very recently, I found the concept of hot-buttered rum more appealing than the reality hot-buttered rum.

While I like each of the components named in the drinkheat , butter, of course, and rum the idea of mixing them together into a warm, boozy drink topped with a slick of butterfat always deterred me from actually making it.

But this recent holiday season, while needing something warm but wanting something out of my usual rotation, I gave the drink a spin and discovered that with a little TLC, the hot-buttered rum in your mug can turn out as good as the one in your imagination.

While you can purchase hot-buttered rum batter in a supermarket, as a general rule I’d suggest you try making your own.

I wound up trying several versions, as well as reviewing a number of recipes, some of which call for as few ingredients as rum, hot water, butter and sugar, while others were more replete with spices, flavorings and other ingredients such as vanilla ice cream .

I’m not much of one for dessert drinks, so this recipe hews closer to the middle of the range, with the requisite butter and sugar but with a little spice to help liven things up. By creaming the butter with the sugar and spices you can also better avoid that dreaded oil slick appearance, and when choosing a rum, go for something big and rich.

How Should I Serve Hot Buttered Rum

Serving hot buttered rum is just as easy as making it.

The nice thing about starting with a homemade mix is that you can use as much or as little as you like.

Generally, I use about one tablespoon of mix, 12 ounces of boiling water, and one ounce of spiced rum. But there will be no judgement from me if you want to use more rum!

Garnish with a cinnamon stick and sit back, relax and enjoy.

As for fattening, Ive got good news for you: turns out butter is good for you! Okay, its still high in calories, but its not clogging your arteries like scientists once thought.

Its healthier than some of the ingredients in butter substitutes, And if you get grass-fed butter it has Vitamin K, which is good for you in many ways.

And all of that is why its about time for the classic Hot Buttered Rum to make a comeback. Its a perfect drink for autumn or winter.

It belongs next to a nice fire, or out on the deck on a crisp, clear evening. It would even work around a campfire.

Whatever the setting, a Hot Buttered Rum makes you feel more cozy, warm and safe. Its like comfort food in the form of a cocktail.

Whats The Best Rum To Use

Any dark or spiced rum will work to make this Christmas cocktail. Spiced rum is typically dark rum that has been flavored with caramel and other spices. I prefer dark rum because you have more control over the spices added, but a quality spiced rum works well too. I recommend a mid-range rum not the cheapest, but you definitely dont need the most expensive either.

How To Make The Batter Ahead

If you only want one or two drinks at a time you can make the batter ahead, keep it in the refrigerator, and make single drinks whenever you want. There are actually two ways to do it:

  • Once youve made the batter, scoop it onto a piece of plastic wrap and roll it up into a log. Chill the log for at least an hour and then you can slice off a piece for a single drink, place it in a mug, add the rum and boiling water. Stir and enjoy!
  • Or, you can just place the batter in a container and use a spoon to scoop the amount you want in your drink. This works well, too.

Of course, if youre making Hot Buttered Rums ahead for a party you can chill the batter ahead, too! The nice thing about making the batter ahead is that it keeps in the refrigerator for up to a month as long as its properly stored.

How To Make A Hot Buttered Rum

Since its not super practical to make just one drink at a time, the recipe for the butter mix is enough to make 4 drinks, while the cocktail instructions themselves are for just one drink. You can make 4 with the butter mix.

Put all of the ingredients in a bowl and mix them together well.

When you are ready to mix a drink:

For 1 drink:

Place 2 tablespoons of the butter mix into a mug, pour in 1 1/2 ounces of rum. Add 6 ounces of hot water and stir well. Garnish

For 4 drinks:

Put all of the butter mixture, rum, and hot water into a pitcher and mix well. Divide evenly into 4 mugs. Garnish.

How To Store Your Hot Buttered Rum Mix

One of the great things about this drink mix is that it will keep in the freezer for 3 months.

Since there are only three of us around for the holidays this year, Im happy to have the makings for a hot, holiday beverage available on an as-needed basis. Next year, when I hope to be entertaining again, Ill probably double the recipe to serve at parties.

    The recipe Ive given below is for 2 drinks, but you can scale this up or down by as much as youd like!

    If you want to make a larger batch, multiply all the quantities below by however many you want to serve.

    Place the batter and water in a crockpot, slow cooker, or heavy-bottomed pot on the stove over very low heat until the butter is melted. Just before serving, whisk in the rum, ladle it into mugs, and garnish!

    Flavor Variations For Hot Buttered Rum:

    Use my recipe as a guide, adapting it to suit your taste. Feel free to play around with the portions of water and rum to make it stronger. You can also tweak the flavorings by doing any of the following:

    • Spices: This recipe uses cinnamon , along with a bit of nutmeg and cloves. You can also use ginger, allspice, or apple/pumpkin pie spice . Increase or decrease the different spices to get your perfect blend.
    • Orange: Add some finely grated orange zest into the butter mixture for an underlying citrus flavor. You can also garnish each drink with a piece of thinly sliced orange.

    • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
    • ½ cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
    • ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
    • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1 cups dark rum
    • 4½ cups boiling water, or as needed
    • teaspoon ground nutmeg, or to taste

      Place butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, clove, and salt for batter into a mixing bowl and cream together with a spatula until well combined.
