How Do I Cook Pierogies
Traditionally, pierogies are first boiled in water, then sautéed in butter with onions. That is truly delicious, but that messes up two extra pans!
In our kielbasa and pierogies sheet pan meal, we simply toss the frozen pierogies with a little oil and some seasoning and let the dry heat of the oven do the work. The result is a crisp-edged, fluffy pierogie thats different than a boiled one, but equally delicious.
Tips For Making This One Skillet Kielbasa Sausage
- Use frozen pierogies for this, there’s no need to thaw them beforehand
- Regular smoked sausage can be used in place of Kielbasa
- I used turkey Kielbasa but any will do
- Don’t re-freeze this since the pierogies were previously frozen and thawed
With just 5 minutes of prep, you can have an entire meal that cooks in one skillet — making clean up a breeze!
And before you run off and assume that your kids won’t enjoy kielbasa, just WAIT. Here’s a tip from a mom who’s been there: don’t actually tell the little ones what they’re eating.
You don’t have to lie, but when I served this meal for the first time my kids looked at their plates and thought that they had seriously lucked out…HOTDOGS and RAVIOLI for dinner! I just didn’t correct them, and they happily finished their meals while reveling in their good fortune. I suppose a last-minute dinner from a bare refrigerator isn’t such a bad thing after all!

I stood in front of my refrigerator, doors wide open, staring blankly at the contents inside…just willing a ready-made meal to jump out and grab me. Save for some eggs, milk, tired grapes, and a few stalks of celery, those shelves looked pretty darn bare.
But the kielbasa! Weeks earlier I had picked up some turkey kielbasa sausage when I saw it on sale at the grocery store, and then promptly shoved it in the drawer with our lunch meat and forgot about it.
I pulled out that kielbasa and I instantly knew that it was going to form the basis for our dinner that evening — no last-minute runs to the grocery store necessary! With a box of pierogies, some diced onion, and a bag of cut green beans from the freezer, dinner was practically done!

Kielbasa With Pierogies & Caramelized Onions

|3 tablespoons olive oil, divided|
|1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced|
|1 lb frozen potato and cheddar pierogies, do not thaw|
|1 lb kielbasa, sliced, any variety will work|
|2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar|
|2 tablespoons whole grain mustard|
|fresh parsley, chopped for garnish|
- In a large saucepan, heat 2 T olive oil over medium heat. Add onions, stirring occasionally, until they turn a golden color, about 15-20 minutes. Spread pierogies on top of onions in a single layer. Lower heat to medium, cover pan and let cook another 5 minutes, stirring every other minute. Add sausage slices and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until pierogies and sausage are cooked through and starting to turn golden brown.
- Meanwhile, in a small bowl, stir together vinegar, mustard and remaining 1 T olive oil.
- Add dressing to pan with the sausages, pierogies and onions and toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper, if needed. Place on a serving platter and garnish with parsley.

How Do You Cook Pierogies And Kielbasa In The Oven
You can you bake frozen pierogies in the oven as long as the they have already been boiled or steamed. So basically, you’re just reheating the cooked perogies and kielbasa.
I like to line the sheet pan with foil, but it’s not necessary. It just makes clean-up easier, and that’s a big plus with me! Then, you toss the pierogies in olive oil and sprinkle them with a little bit of sea salt and dried onions.
You could use chopped onions here, but we’re keeping dinner as easy as possible today. This is definitely a fix-it-and-forget-it kind of easy dinner!
Dot the pierogies with some butter, add the kielbasa, and bake for about 20 minutes. Did I mention we’re not counting calories today, either?
You’ll want to turn the sausage and pierogies at least once so that they heat evenly. You can also add more butter or oil if they seem dry.
After about 20 minutes, dinner is ready! For crispy pierogies, you can let them bake a little longer, but 20 minutes works for me.

Grilled Pierogies And Kielbasa

|1 pound kielbasa , cut into 4 pieces|
|2 tablespoons whole-grain mustard|
|2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar|
|1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil|
|1 large white onion, cut into 6 wedges|
|1 pound frozen potato-and-cheddar pierogies|
|Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper|
|1/4 cup roughly chopped fresh parsley|
- Preheat a grill to medium. Grill the kielbasa, turning, until marked, 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer to a baking sheet or platter.
- Meanwhile, whisk the mustard and vinegar in a large bowl. Slowly whisk in 2 tablespoons olive oil until smooth.
- Toss the onion and pierogies with the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill, covered, until the pierogies thaw and the onion begins to soften, about 5 minutes. Turn the pierogies and onion and continue to grill, covered, until the pierogies are cooked through and the onion is tender, 4 to 6 more minutes. Transfer to the baking sheet or platter.
- Slice the kielbasa into pieces and add to the bowl with the mustard dressing. Roughly chop the onion and add to the bowl along with the pierogies and parsley. Season with salt and pepper and toss. Divide among shallow bowls.

There are a lot of things that Poland has given the culinary world, but two staples that will always stand out are kielbasa and the mighty pierogi. Here, those two superstars are combined in a sheet pan dinner that takes you all of five minutes to get in the oven and yet you end up with a complete and delicious meal. I hold sheet pan dinners in high regard theyre basically weeknight heroes but this one is especially tasty, even though its three-component makeup is pretty simple.
Now, this isnt the most innovative of recipes it is basically just three ingredients plus some olive oil and seasoning, after all but the magic is in the ease of the preparation and how well that simple trio goes together. Rather than boiling pierogies and pan-frying some sausage, you get to enjoy those two favorites together off of a single sheet pan and let me tell you, cabbage is the natural companion to kielbasas smoky pork flavor and pierogies denser doughy bite.

Pierogies and Kielbasa is so simple to make too, especially if you dont make your own homemade pierogies from scratch. Saute some onions and peppers in butter, add sliced kielbasa and cooked pierogies, season with pepper and youre done. You can also heat all of it in the oven for a few minutes before serving, if you choose.
This recipe for Pierogies and Kielbasa could have come from my mom and grandma. I actually have a home-made pierogies recipe that has been passed down that I havent made yet. But this recipe actually came from my daughter-in-laws mom. Betsy made this for dinner regularly when Candice was growing up. And, although Candice never cared for it, the rest of her family did.
When John and I visited the kids during the birth of one of our grandchildren, Betsy had us over for dinner and made this one evening. To say I LOVED this recipe is an understatement. Baked pierogies and kielbasa is a super, super easy dinner. It’s probably one of the easiest dinners you can make, although it does start out with frozen pierogies. But it’s a busy time of year, and you gotta do what you gotta do, right?
I was raised on homemade pierogi, and I still make homemade pierogies from scratch every year at Christmas, using my grandma’s traditional pierogi dough recipe. But that is a TON of work, friends, so when a sudden craving for pierogies snuck up on me last week, I bought a box of frozen ones from the store.
My family was seriously shocked. They know how I feel about frozen pierogies. But since there are no stores that carry homemade pierogies near me, I caved.
But, these little frozen potato dumplings really weren’t bad. I baked the pierogi with kielbasa and turned them into this easy sheet pan dinner. And even my picky teen daughter said they were “legit”!
