Are You An Oat Milk Person

In the 2+ years since I discovered Oatly, Ive become an unwavering devotee of oat milk in my coffee, matcha lattes, cacao, oats and chia pudding. It just so happens to take anything to the next level.

And while you can make oat milk at home, Ill be honest with you: theres just nothing like Oatly, and I couldnt be any more excited to partner with Oatly on this sponsored post to share with you my latest successful experiment: oat milk French toast!

I wasnt into French toast until recently. My fiancé Eric used his creative genius to get me into it, and the result is both this recipe and a trick that will change your breakfast game once and for all.

One morning, Eric made French toast mix using Oatly, and then realized that there was a lot of unused mix left. He then fried it to make the most dreamy, fluffy, sweet eggs. If youre an egg eater, make sure you make extra mix and give it a try. And if not no problem, this oat milk French toast is just as good with the vegan flax eggs!

I used Oatly Barista Edition Oatmilk in this recipe, but given that its not easy to come by, you can replace it with Oatly Full Fat Oatmilk Chilled. Both options are 100% plant-based with no dairy, nuts or gluten.

Warning: if you start gulping your Oatly straight out of the carton, there might be none left by the time you get to make French toast .

What Is The Best Gluten

For this recipe, I used Canyon Bakehouse gluten-free Country White bread. My family also likes both Schar and Aldis LiveGfree white gluten-free bread.

You can also use homemade gluten-free bread as well. I would recommend using day-old homemade gluten-free bread when making Frech toast.

I have two easy recipes for making homemade bread. One is baked in the oven and one is made in a bread machine.

Vegan French Toast Toppings

This is the perfect recipe for a wide variety of toppings! Sometimes we serve this with a toppings bar, and let everyone choose how to make this french toast their own. Some of our favorite toppings include:

  • Fresh fruit: Any fresh berries like fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are always a hit. You could also make a simple fruit compote with apples and/or pears. Sliced bananas are also a delicious option!
  • Nut butter: Sometimes a drizzle of nut butter tastes even better than lots of maple syrup! We love almond butter or peanut butter for this recipe.
  • A dusting of spices or sugar: A little cinnamon, nutmeg or powdered sugar on top goes a long way.
  • Syrups: Try agave syrup, fruit syrup, jam, or even honey if youre making this a vegetarian french toast . You can also try coconut yogurt or whipped coconut cream!
  • Chocolate: Chocolate sauce or chocolate chips turns this recipe into dessert for breakfast!

The raspberry jam is one of my favorite layers in this amazing recipe. Serving it with fresh raspberries, a sprinkle of powdered sugar and just a little maple syrup make it absolutely decadent. Stuffed French toast with cream cheese and raspberry jam are truly the perfect combination.

How Do You Make This Dairy Free French Toast

Making dairy free french toast is actually very easy to do. If you are making homemade bread, then youll want to start by making that. Otherwise, you just need your favorite dairy free bread.

Blend or whisk together all the ingredients in a large, flat container. You want a flat container versus a bowl because its easier to make dairy free french toast when you can lay the bread flat to soak up the mixture.

After youve blended the ingredients together, let the mixture sit for 15-20 minutes.

In a skillet, melt some dairy free butter or coconut oil over medium heat. Dip a slice of bread in the dairy free french toast mixture. Cook for 2-3 minutes or under golden brown, then flip and cook under golden brown on other side.

Top with any favorite toppings or just some delicious syrup!

How To Make The Best French Toast

Youll want to have a 10-inch or 12-inch skillet or a griddle to fry these in. So have those out and ready to go.

Ive found that mixing the batter in a mixing bowl that is wide at the base is the easiest to work with when it comes to dipping the bread in. But if you dont have a wide-based bowl use what you have.

Melt the dairy-free buttery spread and add that to the mixing bowl with almond milk, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and eggs. Whisk it all together until it is combined.

Heat the skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of buttery spread to melt.

Dip just a few pieces of bread slices at a time into the batter making sure each side gets coated with the batter. Then place in skillet and heat for 2-3 minutes on both sides.

Place the cooked French toast on a wire rack in a baking pan in a warm oven in single layers until they are all cooked.

Put another tablespoon of buttery spread in the skillet before adding the next batch of bread. Continue frying as directed. Serve with maple syrup or powdered sugar.

My Secrets To Extra Delicious French Toast

There are three ingredients that make the very BEST french toast a little more unique and so crazy addicting that youll keep going back for another slice. Dont skip these if you want maximum flavor:

  • Coconut milk. I absolutely LOVE using light coconut milk from the can for a delicious custardy, sweet flavor. However, Id found that almond milk is just as great. Oat milk would be lovely, too!
  • Almond extract. It sounds crazy but a little almond extract creates the most addicting flavor that will keep you coming back.
  • Extra cinnamon. I use an entire 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon in my french toast recipe and trust me, youre going to love how it coats the bread and gets nice and toasty when cooked.
  • How Do You Make Easy Vegan French Toast

The secret to a really good french toast is in the batter. Start by adding in your dairy free milk . Milkadamia works great for this recipe because it has a creamy consistency that soaks up well into the bread. Then, add in your vanilla, maple syrup, and cinnamon. Finally, add cornstarch. I know what youre thinking, Cornstarch? But why?! Trust me! Cornstarch allows your french toast to get a golden crispy outside coating when it cooks in the pan. Stir all of the ingredients together in a bowl with a whisk until well combined.

    French Toast With Almond Milk

The classic French Toast recipe can easily be made with almond milk with a 1 to 1 ratio. Swap out the dairy milk for almond milk, and youre good to go.

Other dairy-free milk options you can use:

    • hemp milk
    • rice milk
    • cashew milk

Again, this French toast recipe doesnt use milk at all. Ive found that milk tends to make the toast soggy and isnt necessary. A couple of eggs, cinnamon, and vanilla are all you need to make the perfect stack of French toast.
