Tips for Shifting to a Plant Based Diet for Meat Lovers ...

    Tips for a Mixed Household

  • If youre cooking for your family, they may not be ready to shift to an entirely plant-based diet. Taking it one step at a time is still progress. A meatless meal one night a week is a great way to start and still has a huge impact.
  • Rather than struggling to fill the void of the animal-based food theyre used to having as the central focus of their plate, its more fun and more effective to start fresh by shifting the focus on building a flavorful and fun plate full of plant foods.
  • Invite your meat eater to cook something for him or herself that can go along with your healthy vegetarian recipes. Then they can also try the delicious dish youve made, and youre not forcing them to give anything up.
  • It can take some time for our taste buds to adjust and fully appreciate plant-based foods. Give them time and your family might find that, after a while, they actually like vegetarian night and can enjoy it more often.
  • Flavors to Focus On

Savory or umami is a fantastic aspect of the flavor spectrum to focus on to ensure a meat lovers palate is satisfied.

We often cover the salty or sweet tastes, but we dont always consider savory in the same way. Think of things like roasted garlic, roasted eggplant, nutritional yeast, sun-dried tomatoes, olives and miso.

Including ingredients with a savory flavor like these in your dishes will tickle the taste buds that arent necessarily fulfilled by cucumbers and kale alone.

Tell Them That Instead Of Subtracting Animal Foods Focus On Adding More Vegetables

Larger lifestyle shifts can come later, but one of the best ways to start out is by having friends and family members think about what they can add to their plates, instead of what they have to take away. The easiest way to eat more plant foods when it comes to vegetables is to just add more to your current meals. For example, if you’re following a recipe, and it calls for one cup of spinach add two-to-three cups or if you’re adding roasted vegetables to your plate make sure to add an extra one or two spoonfuls, suggests Kathleen Oswalt, RDN.

Difference Between A Slow Cooker And A Crock

You may have heard the term Crock-Pot used interchangeably with slow cooker and wondered about the difference. Crock-Pot is a brand of slow cooker that uses a ceramic or earthenware crock as its main cooking vessel, often encased in a heating element. Crock-Pot has been around since the 1970s and lent its name to the entire class of cookers in the same way that Kleenex became a synonym for tissue. So every Crock-Pot is a slow cooker, but not every slow cooker is a Crock-Pot.

I mentioned the Instant Pot brand earlier, which is becoming synonymous with pressure cooker. In fact, Instant Pots are multicookers, which combine both slow cooking and pressure cooking functions.

While the modern slow cooker uses electricity, the concept of slow cooking goes back long before the advent of electricity. Certain heavy-duty pots could be used for slow cooking if they distributed heat evenly enough. The cast iron dutch oven, a pot with a tight-fitting iron lid, is an example of cookware that could slow cook in an oven, or even over smoldering coals.
