Can You Freeze Spinach Dip

Quick and Easy Spinach Dip| How to make Spinach Dip

Yes, you totally can!

Once prepared and cooled, spinach dip can be stored in a sealable container or freezer bag for up to one to three months.

When ready to eat, allow dip to thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then let it come to room temperature on the counter for 30 minutes. From there, just follow the regular recipe instructions for baking the dip.

Blend The Rest Of The Ingredients

Once the sour cream and cream cheese mixture is smooth and well-blended, add in the rest of the ingredients. Specifically add the spinach, the Parmesan, 1 cup of the mozzarella, the onion powder, the garlic, the red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Make sure to keep mixing until it’s one well-combined dip.

How To Make The Best Cold Spinach Dip:

  • Start with frozen spinach. Let it thaw or run it under hot water until thawed. The most important step is to remove as much moisture as possible from the spinach so you end up with creamy spinach dip instead of a watery one! I suggest putting your thawed spinach into a colander, set over a sink, and squeezing it with your hands several times, allowing the excess water to drain. If you want to make sure it is really drained, use a paper towel to soak up excess moisture.
  • Mix softened cream cheese, sour cream, and ranch dressing powder into the spinach. Make sure to use softened cream cheese to make it easier to mix together. I suggest using a stand or hand mixer to ensure everything is incorporated. Fold in the water chestnuts.
  • Let chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

With dear friends coming for dinner who do not like garlic, my menu had to be tweaked. Trying to keep things simple, a vegetable platter with a cold spinach dip recipe was perfect. I grew up loving the Knorrs spinach dip that was served in a bread bowl. Yup, Im a child of the 1970s.

But most sour cream spinach dip recipes had raw garlic and raw onions. I decided to nix the garlic and finely mince and saute some sweet onions to remove the bite. All 6 of us dove right into the dip with our fresh vegetables.

Types Of Mayonnaise To Use In Spinach Dip

Weight Watchers Sour Cream and Spinach Dip Recipe WW Recipes

I tested this spinach dip recipe with regular mayo, light mayo, avocado oil mayo, and coconut oil mayo. All were delicious but yielded slightly different results.

Regular full-fat mayonnaise – this was my favorite. It had the best flavor and texture overall.

Low-fat mayonnaise – the flavor was equally satisfying, just a little different and the spinach dip was a smidgen runnier.

Avocado oil mayonnaise – I really like this version. It had a unique flavor and was on the healthier side.

Coconut oil mayonnaise – This version wasn’t my favorite. You couldn’t taste the coconut but it had a vinegar zing to it.

I have used full-fat Greek yogurt in place of the sour cream in this spinach dip recipe but I haven’t tried other substitutes for the mayonnaise.

If you like your spinach dip a little more garlicky you can add an extra teaspoon of garlic powder.

    How Long Does It Last

That depends on you. Its best to store the sour cream in the back of your fridge, not the fridge door, where temperatures fluctuate. If you clean your container well and keep the sour cream at 40 degrees, it should last about two weeks. To keep it fresher longer, store it upside down so it isnt affected by air. When the cream falls to the lid of the jar, it creates a vacuum, which slows down mold and bacteria growth. You can use this nifty trick on all dairy products that come in a container or a jar. Im looking at you, cottage cheese.

Can You Make Spinach Dip In Advance

    Yes, you totally can!

Just prepare the dip per recipe instructions, stopping just before baking. Cover the dish with a lid, aluminum foil, or plastic wrap, then store in the refrigerator for up to three days.

When ready to eat, allow the dip to come to room temperature on the counter for about 30 minutes, then follow the baking instructions as normal.

To Ferment Or Not To Ferment

Im a pretty impatient person, so if Im using the sour cream for a batter or a dip, I add it a few minutes after Ive made it because its primary purpose is to add creaminess and flavor. Its not the star of the show its a background singer. Now, if its the Beyonce of your dish, youll want to let it sit for a day on your counter to let the cream ferment and thicken and then refrigerate. To keep it 100, I usually skip fermenting it and just put it in the fridge to thicken overnight. It still tastes great.

How Long Can You Leave Out A Party Dip

Whenever you serve a help yourself dish like a party dip, you should always keep track of how long it sits at room temperature.

For most foods, the general rule of thumb is that a perishable item should not be in the danger zone for more than two hours. And by danger zone, this is usually at or just above room temperature.

Since this dip will be served warm, that should give you another 30-60 minutes before needing to keep track of the dip. So, in total, this dip can be left out for an absolute maximum of three hours, depending on the temperature of the room. However, be sure to still check the dip every now and then and make your best judgment.

Once you pass the recommended time, you can heat it up in the oven again.

For best results, Id recommend using a warming tray so that the creamy spinach dip stays warm and above the danger zone temperature.
