There are very few truly original recipes because most have been modified or adapted for decades in virtually every way imaginable. Nonetheless, you can adapt recipes to become your own by substituting ingredients, converting a recipes yield and portion size, and changing the overall flavor of a dish. I consider it a personal challenge. And an attempt to overcome my lack of confidence in the kitchen.
Ive decided that a large part of my frustration in the past has been twofold:
- Finding recipes that utilize ingredients that I already have on hand.
- Finding tasty recipes that are quick & easy to make.
My overall goal is to reduce the number of times we eat out each week.
For now, my primary goal is to remove the intimidation factor by simply making recipes that adapt to my pantry .
Perhaps you remember my last fiasco
This time, I definitely wont be stocking up on all of the possible ingredients that I think I might want to include in a dish some time in the near future before I get tired of cooking again.
In fact, the point of this article is to share a handful of fun websites I found that let you type in the ingredients you already have on hand. After a simple search, you get a complete list of recipes that include the ingredients you entered. Its as simple as that!

Soaking In Honey Syrup
My favourite step is here. Nope, not the soaking part. I mean the cake-poking part! So satisfying
Make the Honey Syrup while the cake is cooling for 15 minutes.
Simmer the honey and water for 5 minutes to reduce. This concentrates the honey flavour, while heating the honey thins it so it gets absorbed more readily by the cake.
Add lemon juice and simmer for a further 2 minutes. Then cool the syrup for 5 to 10 minutes.
Poke holes in the cake, after its rested for 15 minutes. Bamboo or metal skewers work well. Poke with gusto, all the way down to the base around 30 or more holes. Poke between the almonds so you dont disturb them.
Honey syrup Pour over the honey syrup in 4 goes, waiting between each pour for the syrup to soak in before doing the next. Use a spoon if needed to spread the syrup evenly across the surface. Then leave to soak for a good 15 minutes.
TIP: If your cake has a slight dome on it, lightly press the dome down with a spatula after baking to flatten the surface, else the syrup tends to just run off the cake and down the sides. Not the end of the world as it then gets absorbed by the base and sides of the cake. But it is nicer when the syrup has soaked the middle of the cake too.

How To Make Baked Zucchini
Drizzle some olive oil on a sheet pan and preheat the oven to 400°F.
Mix the bread crumbs, cheese, parsley, salt, pepper, and garlic in a mixing bowl. Stir in olive oil until the bread crumbs are moistened.
Slice the zucchini into sticks. Rinse them and let them drain.
Place the zucchini sticks in the bowl with the bread crumb mixture and toss gently.
Place the coated zucchini slices on the prepared baking sheet and sprinkle the extra bread crumbs in the bowl over the top of them. Drizzle some olive oil over the top of the breaded zucchini.
Bake them for 15 to 20 minutes or until the coating is golden brown. I like to sprinkle a little more salt over the top of them before serving.

Heres What We Thought
Why mess with perfection?! We still cant believe how quick and easy this simple icebox cake came together. From start to finish we were able to put together the cake in less than 30 minutes. Talk about a quick dessert! The hardest part about this recipe was truly waiting for it to chill.
Upon serving, we noticed that it is imperative to run a knife around the edge of the pan to cleanly remove the sides of the springform pan from the icebox cake. Do not skip that step!
As for tasteyum! We can say with certainty that we will be adding Ina Gartens icebox cake into our regular rotation of quick and easy summer dessert recipes. While the cream and cookie layers remained distinct, their flavors melded together beautifully as the cake chilled. Plus, the cookies softened and became perfectly chewy .
What we enjoyed most about this cake is its room for creativity and adaptation. All we could think about while devouring this chocolaty cookie icebox cake was how many other flavor combinations we could create from this one recipe. Its the perfect base for countless other flavor combos.
How To Make Smoked Pork Steaks:
Place pork onto a baking sheet and season with salt. Brine in the refrigerator for 2 hours. Remove pork from the refrigerator. Let come close to room temperature, about 1 hour. When 15 minutes remain, preheat the smoker with the lid closed to 225 degrees F.
Whisk together the apple cider vinegar, worcheshire sauce, olive oil, and garlic paste in a smoker safe saucepan.
Combine dry rub seasoning in a small bowl or ramekin.
Rub into both sides of the pork, if the salt has not completely dissolved into the meat I suggest brushing it off before adding the dry rub. Do not pat the pork dry before the rub, the salt should have drawn out some moisture during the brine which is what we are working with to help the rub adhere. Put on some gloves and rub the seasoning into the meat.
Place pork directly onto the grill grates of the smoker along with the saucepan. Smoke for 2 hours, stopping every 30 minutes to baste with the sauce.
After 2 hours, brush your favorite BBQ sauce onto the top of the pork. Smoke for 15 minutes, then flip and brush bbq sauce on again. Smoke for 30 more minutes, or until the internal temp has reached 185 degrees F.
Remove pork and let rest on a wooden cutting board for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Meet My New Favorite Summer Dessert: A Classic Fruit Mousse
This dessert began as a riff on a simple English fool. The fool dessert was a way to make a light creamy dessert that is mousse-like, without having to separate eggs and deal with fussiness. A simple sweetened fruit puree is folded into softly whipped cream, leaving streaks of fruit and cream in a swirly fluff. Add some crumbled meringues and you have a classic Eton Mess. I love both for summer desserts.
But then I discovered a new version I love even moreone which takes a simple fruit mousse, based on the same principal, but adds a clever twist. Instead of using sweetened fruit puree, you sweeten the cream, and instead of leaving it streaky, you fold in in completely. This takes the original from a dessert where you are tasting fruit and cream separately, into a true fruit mousse. And still no eggs to mess about with!
Even better? I use sweetened condensed milk as the sweetener. And I do this for a particular reason. Any leftover mousse can be frozen as-is to make a version of a no-churn ice cream . The liquid nature of the sugar in sweetened condensed milk and the added milk proteins help to keep the mousse from freezing too hard! Two summer desserts in one.
How Do You Create An Original Recipe
My opinion would lie somewhere in the middle, while I may not necessarily agree that adapting a recipe by swapping out a few ingredients makes it totally ‘brand new’, I also understand that it’s hard to make a dish 100% original. If creating original recipes in your kitchen is something you’re interested in, but afraid to do, the most important thing, as with anything in this great culinary world, is to START SIMPLE. I wouldn’t recommend popping by your local grocery store and picking up, oh, say some pork hock, an orange, eggplant, cayenne pepper and some ranch dressing, then getting home and thinking to yourself: ‘Now, what should I do with this?’ That probably won’t end very well…
