Homemade Sweet and Spicy Barbecue Sauce | Best Sweet and Spicy BBQ Sauce | Backyard Barbecue Sauce

St. Louis is at the crossroads of barbecue and blends many influences known for its grilled ribs, its style differs from others mainly for the quick method of cooking used versus the many hours of smoking seen elsewhere.

St. Louis-style barbecue sauces are thinner and tangier than those served in Kansas City. This recipe presents the perfect combination of flavors to make St. Louis barbecue: simmer ketchup, water, vinegar, sugar, mustard, onion, garlic, cayenne, and salt for 20 to 30 minutes. Its medium thickness and flavor, not too overpowering, make this a great sauce for all tastes.

This sauce is best when made the day before. Keeps in the fridge for 1 week.

Sweet And Spicy Bbq Sauce Ingredients

  • The Peppers . Im using a couple of medium-sized jalapeno peppers for this homemade barbecue sauce recipe for a nice level of heat. Try it with spicier peppers for some serious heat. I also use onion and garlic for flavor and body.
  • Tomato Sauce. Tomato sauce is key for the sauciness of the bbq sauce. Most recipes call for ketchup, which is totally fine to use, though ketchup usually has a lot of sugar, so be sure to adjust as needed.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar. Apple Cider Vinegar brings the tangy element to the sauce, and is sweeter than white wine vinegar or red wine vinegar.
  • Worcestershire Sauce. This is a great flavor builder and perfect for homemade bbq sauce!
  • The Seasonings. I use cayenne pepper for extra heat and smoked paprika for a touch of smokey flavor, along with ground mustard and a touch of salt and pepper. You can try other seasonings to your preference. Feel free to experiment.
  • The Sweet. Honey and brown sugar are perfect for bringing in not only our sweet element for this bbq sauce, but also a nice touch of flavor. If you feel the sauce is too sweet, use one or the other, or cut back on both of them. Maple syrup is a nice substitution.
  • Bourbon. Bourbon carries oak and caramel flavors that translate wonderfully to the finished bbq sauce. This gives the sauce a distinctive finish.
  • Hot Sauce. Use your favorite! Youll get even more heat, which is what I love.

Hot And Spicy Bbq Sauce

You know what they say. Play with fire and you’ll get burned. This sauce can be made hot. Real hot! Be careful. And, remember, if you want it hotter just add some habanero pepper strips! While I mention the heat in this sauce, it’s balanced out with the sweet from the molasses. This sauce is my wife’s favorite! I haven’t found a more popular or higher rated spicy BBQ sauce. If you want spicy, this is the best recipe you will find!

The popularity makes sense. People love it! What’s different about this sauce is that it’s a very balanced sauce. It’s not as sweet as most of the others in the list or as spicy, but it’s an exceptional all-around sauce.

Spicy Bbq Sauce Recipe

So, the hunt for the perfect Spicy Barbecue Sauce continued. As I experimented with different ingredients, I kept coming up ultimately dissatisfied with the end results.

Today, I decided to try again. I had a very long list of ingredients that I wanted to try this time. As I was adding things to the sauce and tasting as I went along, I suddenly realized that I had exactly what I wanted.

I stopped there and very happily asked my husband to taste the sauce. He was thrilled with it. I will be quadrupling this recipe next time I make it and freezing the extra to have for future meals.

This is a pretty spicy sauce as it is written however, if you like more heat, feel free to increase the Tabasco and cayenne. I served this sauce over pulled pork and it was an instant hit.

This homemade barbecue sauce gets its spiciness from Tabasco sauce and cayenne pepper. Ketchup and brown sugar provide a sweet backdrop for the spice and tang from apple cider vinegar. A dash of smoked paprika adds a smoky flavor that makes such a difference.

This is a recipe for spicy barbeque sauce. I let meat set overnight in the sauce. It makes a great marinade sauce. Its really spicy so if you don’t like it so spicy leave out the pepper flakes. This also helps as a meat tenderizer. Enjoy!

I’ve never cared that much for store bought barbecue sauce. I just like to make things myself from scratch including this spicy, deep red-brown sauce. You’ll find it clings well when you slather it on grilled meat. -Helena Georgette Mann, Sacramento, California

1 to 3 teaspoons chili powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
1 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard
1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, saute onion in oil until tender. Add garlic cook 1 minute. Stir in the chili powder, cayenne and pepper cook 1 minute longer. , Stir in the ketchup, molasses, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and pepper sauce. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat simmer, uncovered, for 30-40 minutes or until sauce reaches desired consistency. Cool for 15 minutes. , Strain sauce through a fine mesh strainer over a large bowl, discarding vegetables and seasonings. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 1 month. Use as a basting sauce for grilled meats.

    But do you know how easy it is to make your own? And from ingredients you probably already have on hand? And in about 15 minutes?

    I do, and Im sharing the recipe with you. And maybe best of all, this recipe isnt just goodits really good. Its everything you want in a barbecue sauce. Its sweet, spicy, and smoky. And you can even adjust it to make it more or less soif you like a sauce thats sweeter, or spicier.

    You might remember when I shared a recipe for a Basic Homemade BBQ Saucewith only three ingredients!and thats still my go-to when Im short on ingredients and time. Or when I just want something super simple. But when I want my barbecued foods to have more depth, more flavormore oomphthis is the recipe I use.

    Some of my favorite ways to use this sauce are on grilled chicken, grilled pork chops, grilled pork tenderloin, and ribs. But its also great as a burger topping, a sauce for pulled pork sandwiches, a dipping sauce for grilled french fries, or even a pizza sauce for barbecued chicken pizza!
