Why Slow Cook London Broil

Reading the description of the traditional preparation for this cut of beef, you might be wondering why slow cooking it would be a good idea. For me, I think most beef roasts are made even better by letting them cook for several hours and braise in their own juices and additional flavors. Because this cut of meat tends to be leaner, slow cooking it also results in very tender, to the point of falling apart, meat. For this recipe you will still sear the beef in a skillet over high heat, locking in all that flavor and allowing the sugars on the outside to caramelize, so that part remains the same.

London Broil for the Slow Cooker Recipe

Well, if I havent made it obvious quite yet, let me do it right now.

The Crock Pot has this great ability to slowly simmer this london broil roast into something magical.

I call it magic because your typical London Broil piece of meat does not contain a lot of marbling, AKA fat, in it. The marling in a piece of beef is what makes it tender.

Therefore, a piece of London Broil meat with little marbling in it should expect to be quite tough and not tender.

However, you place the slow cooker in the mix and it changes the game completely.

The slow cooker slowly simmers the meat in the juices that eventually will end up becoming the gravy, and that allows the meat to become this gloriously juicy beast of a roast, so tender that it pretty much just falls apart at the touch of your fork!

How To Make Bbq London Broil In The Slow Cooker

Create a delicious BBQ London Broil in the slow cooker for a simple and tasty meal.

I managed to get a good deal on a London Broil , but didn’t want to go with my usual method of cooking it which is to marinade then cook on grill/broil until medium rare in the middle.

This time I decided to cook it low and slow in the slow cooker with Gid and Clark’s Righteous Rib Rub.

UPDATE: One commentor below mentions that 6 hours was too long in her 4 quart slow cooker and the meat was ruined. Slow cooker cooking time can vary greatly based on numerous variables such as size of the cooker and the weight and thickness of the meat. I highly recommend a slow cooker with a temperature probe for cooking roasts and whole chickens.

Tips For Cooking London Broil

Follow these tips for the best way to make London broil!

  • Use the right marinade. A good London broil marinade contains both oil and an acidic ingredient to tenderize the meat.
  • Dont over marinate. Steak should be marinated for 2-12 hours for best flavor and texture. Over 12 hours and your meat will turn mushy.
  • Dont overcook. Steaks become tough when they are overcooked, and medium-rare to medium is best for a London Broil. Use a meat thermometer to cook it precisely.
  • Slice against the grain. Cutting the steak against the grain breaks up the muscle fibers and ensures that every bite is tender.

How To Cook A London Broil

One of the classic ways of cooking a London broil is by using a broiler. Using a broiler is very simple, needless to say, very quick as well which precisely is the reason why most people prefer this method of cooking London broil.

Usually, after eight to ten minutes of cooking using a broiler, the meat is already ready and may have already turned into a restaurant-worthy steak. When cooking London broils using a broiler though, the technique is to ensure it wont get overcooked. Otherwise, the texture and tenderness of a typically yummy steak wont be achieved. Needless to say, cooking it too long will turn it into a leather-like, chewy cut of beef.

Now, recently, more and more people are cooking London broil using a crockpot. A crockpot actually refers to a type of slow cooker that was first introduced in 1970. Originally, it was marketed as a bean cooker. However, over time, the product was redesigned and has eventually evolved into the model that we recognize today.

These days, a crockpot is used to cook basically anything and everything including London broil. In fact, the London broil recipes that I will be sharing, later on, are specifically cooked using a crockpot.

Unlike a broiler, what I like about a crockpot is it very easy to use, and you dont have to worry about noise as it cooks peacefully. Also, there are variations like digital crockpots that allows you to set the amount of time required in cooking London broil.

What To Serve It With

My favorite way to eat slow cooker London broil steak is of course with mashed potatoes. They are so creamy and the gravy just pairs so well with it! Try to make sweet mashed potatoes or even mashed zucchini. My second favorite is plain white rice.

Rice soaks all the steak juices and becomes extra delicious. On the picture below there is a slow cooker London broil steak served with brown rice and quinoa mixed together. Also a great option!

More healthy side dish options are steamed or roasted asparagus, Brussels sprouts or some broccoli. These will be nice for a late dinner or just a low carb meal.

Do not forget to top cooked meal with chopped green onions or chopped cilantro. It will brighten colors and great for additional flavor.

What is a London Broil?

London Broil is a way of preparing a meat recipe and does not refer to the cut of meat. That being said, most kosher markets will sell cuts of meat called “London Broil.” Those cuts can also be called flank or top round. Top round is not a kosher cut of beef so you are probably being sold a flank steak.

Why is London Boil tough?

A lot of London Broil recipes can come out tough if they are not cooked correctly. The cuts sold as London Broil are generally leaner cuts of beef without a lot of intramuscular fat and can dry out if they are overcooked. This recipe cooks the meat low and slow with plenty of liquid which helps to keep it moist and juicy.
