How To Make Sex On The Beach Cocktail
Sex On The Beach Ingredients
The IBA version includes the following ingredients in a Sex on the Beach cocktail:
- Vodka: For this recipe, use any plain vodka that you have on hand. Nothing fancy.
- Peach Schnapps: Dont confuse Peach Schnapps with Peach liqueur theyre not the same! Schnapps is a fermented and distilled liquor and thats what you need for a Sex on the Beach cocktail.
- Orange juice: We prefer 100% orange juice without pulp for a smoother cleaner look and taste.
- Cranberry juice: You want 100% cranberry juice that has a blend of other sweet fruit juices If you use pure unsweetened cranberry juice cocktail, the drink will be too tart or bitter.
Ingredient Notes And Shopping Tips
Vodka: Any vodka will do just fine in this recipe. For a fruity twist, consider using flavored vodka. I think orange, strawberry kiwi, or even pomegranate would be tasty.

If you love the idea of serving a fruity cocktail at your next party, make a large batch of sex on the beach! Since the cocktail relies on a simple ratio of vodka, orange juice, cranberry juice, and peach schnapps, it’s easy to fill a pitcher. Then, let your guests fill their glasses with ice and pour their own drinks. You could even set up a fruity garnishing station!

How To Make It
For me, the way to present this drink is in layered form. Just keep in mind to hand your guests a stirrer and advise them to mix the layers before drinking.
For this, shake orange juice, pineapple juice, and peach schnapps on ice and strain the mix into an ice-filled glass. Then mix the remaining ingredients on ice and float them on the Beach layer.
Garnish the drink with an orange peel or a slice of orange, and its ready to be served.
What Mixes Well With Peach Schnapps
Peach schnapps is a sweet, fruity liqueur that’s a common fixture in bars. Its strength varies, from 20 percent to 50 percent ABV , so some peach schnapps can be stronger than the average vodka. You can drink peach schnapps straight, though some can be rather syrupy and better served on the rocks. It’s also a versatile mixer and the key ingredient in many peach cocktails. It pairs well with other fruits, including cranberry juice in the woo woo cocktail, though it’s also delicious when mixed with hot chocolate.

How To Serve Jello Shots
We garnish our sex on the beach jello shots, but wait until right before serving so the whipped cream doesnt melt and the fruit stays fresh. When youre ready to enjoy them, run a dull knife around the inside edge of the container to loosen the jello and remove it. We also recommend giving your guests tasting spoons for those who dont want to swallow them all at once.
Is There A Good Substitute For Crme De Cassis
Crème de cassis is a black currant-flavored liqueur that also makes an appearance in the Kir and Chimayó cocktails. While not essential in the bar, it’s a nice, inexpensive liqueur to have around. Though it’s key in the more traditional bliss on the beach recipe, its infrequent use in the bar has caused many to turn to Chambord as a substitute the difference between the black currant and black raspberry liqueurs is not significant. Grenadine can also be used.

What Juice To Use In Sex On The Beach
Sex on the beach drinks use either orange or grapefruit juice – and the juice you pick depends a lot on what flavor you prefer more.
We’re using orange juice in this recipe since it is more the classic take – but if you like a less sweet cocktail, you might prefer grapefruit to orange juice!
We’re also adding cranberry juice, which cuts the sweetness of the peach and orange , for a bit of a tart kick.

Ingredients Of A Sex On The Beach
The Sex On The Beach is a cocktail that seems to have countless different recipes. One could think that every bartender has a very own recipe. And as confusing as that is, the beauty of it is that you can also experiment at home with crafting the perfect recipe.
The standardized recipe only includes Vodka, peach schnapps, orange juice, and cranberry juice. Tweaks on this recipe often add or substitute fruit juices. The most common might be pineapple and grapefruit juice.
But, also, the list of alcoholic ingredients is often expanded. Crème de Cassis or raspberry liqueur are your best options here.
My favorite recipe includes the following ingredients:
- Peach Schnapps
- Raspberry liqueur
- Cranberry juice
The lemon juice is a great addition that brings a subtle tartness to the drink. Just one teaspoon is enough to lift this sweet and boozy cocktail and give it a kick of acidity.

About Sex On The Beach Cocktails
Its sweet, fruity, and has an absolutely memorable name – the Sex on the Beach cocktail is a classic that we always love making.
There are a lot of backstories people attribute to the history of the Sex on the Beach drink, but many people say it originated in the mid 1980’s at Confettis Bar in Florida. Ted Pizio, a bartender who was supposed to be moving lots of peach schnapps, came up with the name as a nod to what he thought “really” brought tourists to Florida – and decided sex and beaches were more popular than Mickey Mouse, or so the story goes.
No matter if you love or hate the name – the amazing sweet tropical flavor is always there!
This classic cocktail is easy to drink, simple to make, and doesn’t involve hard to find liquor – just vodka, peach schnapps, orange juice, and cranberry juice for a fresh and delicious tropical flavor.
Sex and the beach cocktails make perfect party drinks, can be made in big batches, and taste light and fruity – they aren’t overwhelming with a strong alcohol flavor.
You can make this drink stronger with more vodka or make a tasty non-alcoholic version by adding tonic water instead of vodka and using peach simple syrup instead of peach schnapps – so everyone at your party can get in on the fun!
We hope you love this drink as much as we do.

Why Is It Called Sex On The Beach
The naming of the cocktail is another mystery. The legend that Ted Pizio is the original inventor of the cocktail gives one possible interpretation. According to this, Ted Pizio said that Sex and the Beach were the two biggest reasons for sping breakers coming to Florida. And those spring breakers were principal customers for bars in the sunshine state.
Another interpretation refers to the usually layered presentation of the drink. The red part represents the Sex A mix consisting of Vodka, cranberry juice, and sometimes additional red and fruity liqueurs. The yellow, or better, the beach part of the cocktail, gets represented by peach schnapps combined with orange juice and occasionally pineapple juice.
History Of The Sex On The Beach
The Sex On The Beach was a must on most cocktail menus in the 1980s and 1990s. Its provocative name combined with the fruity taste masking the high alcohol content made it a popular choice amongst partying folks. However, the love for this drink faded when the craft cocktail scene started its latest renaissance.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to find out who invented this intriguing drink. Of course, there are numerous myths and stories about how the Sex on the Beach cocktail got created. But all of them lack substance and dont match historical documentation. One popular anecdote is that a Florida bartender named Ted Pizio invented the drink in 1987 to promote Peach Schnapps. But as reasonable and valid as this may sound, the cocktail already got a mention in 1982. That year the Americans Bartenders School listed the Sex on the Beach in their Guide to Drinks.
Another tale says it all started by combining a Fuzzy Naval and a Cape Codder. And true enough, bring both these drinks together, and you have all the main components to make a Sex On the Beach cocktail. But unfortunately, theres no proof that this story is true either.

You know a cocktail is good when it’s called Sex on the Beach. This is another excellent option for Valentine’s day or really, any day. Not only does it taste great, it’s also very photogenic as you can see from the pics here.
I’d love to know who originally came up with the name for this cocktail so I can shake his / her hand. It’s one of those ones that I can imagine people leaning over the bar to whisper in the bartender’s ear.
Only the bold would want to be caught yelling over the crowd I’ll take sex on the beach! and stirring the interest of the entire bar full of patrons. It may not be as classy in name as the Manhattan cocktail but it’s definitely tastes amazing!

The Story Behind The Sex On The Beach
Unlike Sex on the Beachs name which gets right to the point the origins of the drink itself arent so straightforward.
Some versions of the story claim that the cocktail was invented in 1987 by a bartender named Ted Pizio who worked at Confettis Bar in you guessed it Florida. The tale goes that a peach schnapps brand called National Distribution ran a contest that awarded $1,000 to the bar that sold the most peach schnapps. In response, Pizio set out to incorporate it into a recipe of his own, and the Sex on the Beach was born. However, theres also evidence that the recipe was featured in a 1982 American Bartenders School guidebook, which predates Teds story by five years.
Wherever it came from, the Sex on the Beach is downright delicious and hard not to like. To make one, all youll need are cranberry and orange juice, plus some vodka and peach schnapps. Garnish with an orange wedge and cocktail cherry for the final product: a candied concoction thatll be sure to transport you to the neon-hued Fort Lauderdale spring break beaches circa 87.
