Healthy Make Ahead Meal Ideas For Toddlers

My kids LOVE my cucumber salad and beg for it. They eat it by the quart. Its sliced cucumbers, thinly sliced onions, dill, salt, pepper, and balsamic vinegar. Its a fan favorite at little sprouts. I would never think a kid would eat that. But they do.

I love it and made it for myself. They kept begging for it until I had to make 4 large cucumbers at a time so they all got enough.

There is hardly anything that all the kids love, so remember to offer choices. We usually have 4-6 choices of fruits and veggies on our table every lunch. I just say you have to pick at least two and ask what they want.

They dont have to eat two here, but food program rules dictate that two have to be on their plates, so I say pick two. I usually have one fruit and the rest are freshly sliced cucumbers, carrots, sugar snap peas, cooked frozen corn, cucumber salad, roasted broccoli, roasted cauliflower, cooked frozen mixed vegetables, or peas, or something like that.

The Picky Eater Strategies For The Picky Eater

Give Your Baby Control. If you are still spoon-feeding your baby, she may be at a stage where she would prefer to feed herself and control what she is eating.

Try offering her up a plate of yummy and colorful finger foods. Try something like sweet potato cubes with baked apple dices and diced green beans then walk away in that you let her explore and eat the food on her own terms. Always ensure you are watching your baby during feeding times.

Spice It Up. If you are serving bland foods, try adding some spices or cheeses and also try and mix up creative combinations.

Its In The Bowl. Give baby his own colorful bowl and fun-shaped spoon. Let him experiment and feed himself. Make food and eating fun, offer colorful, healthy and fun foods and above all, make eating a relaxing experience.

As you know, never force baby to eat and never make food and feeding a battleground. Always remember, your baby will never starve himself.

Invite An Adventurous Friend Over For Dinner

While feeding-clinic sessions generally take place one-on-one, Dr. Williams says that at home you can harness the power of peers. “You and your spouse do influence what your child tries, but no one can make a bigger difference than his friends,” says Dr. Williams.

A study by a Penn State colleague, Helen Hendy, Ph.D., found that preschoolers were more likely to taste mango when they saw a classmate do it. “Sometimes all it takes is for a friend to snatch a piece of broccoli for your kid to want to nibble on it,” he says. Of course, one taste probably won’t make him a broccoli fan, but it will help him get over the hump of trying it, which is half the battle.

Most Toddlers Are Picky Eaters

What to feed a one year old: 55 meal ideas

Many toddlers express their budding independence through eating or not eating, as the case may be. So nearly all toddlers could be described as picky eaters. If kids don’t like a food, they won’t eat it it’s that simple.

Does your toddler want to eat only macaroni and cheese? When a child is stuck on one food, a parent might feel forced to serve that food every day so the child eats something. But eventually the child may tire of that food and then what?

You choose the foods on your toddler’s plate and you don’t have to serve macaroni and cheese daily. If you do, you miss a chance to introduce new foods and increase the number of foods your child is willing to eat. Most of these “food jags” won’t last long if parents don’t give in to them.

Kids won’t starve, but they will learn to be more flexible rather than go hungry. Serve a variety of healthy foods including known favorites and some new foods to make up the menu. Your toddler may surprise you one day by eating all of them.

Your toddler doesn’t like green beans the first time around? Don’t stop serving them. Kids are naturally slow to accept new tastes and textures, so keep reintroducing the beans. Serve a small portion and encourage your child to try a bite without nagging or forcing.

And be sure you’re setting a good example! Serve nutritious foods that you like or eat something new so your kids see you enjoying what you’re asking them to eat.

Tips For Feeding Picky Toddlers

Here are a few more tips for feeding picky toddlers on the regular. First, keeping a routine makes mealtimes more predictable thus more comfortable for kids. Dont make separate toddler meals for kids, cook one meal, and eat peacefully.

Make the mealtime pleasant, not stressful. Have pleasant conversation, smile, enjoy your food. Mealtime is the best time of the day to connect with your family.

More great ways to help kids want to eat is to let them help prepare the meal. Kids can put food on a serving plate, set the table, choose side dishes, stir, measure, dump, and do all kinds of fun things. Even more than cooking is growing food. If you have a garden, let kids get involved in tending it. Youll be surprised at how much it affects what kids want to try.

Simple Meals For Your 1

Ill be the first to admit that feeding a one-year-old can be positively maddening. Theres the teething, the inability to communicate fully, the choking hazards, the obsession with throwing food on the floor, the signs of picky eating, and so much more.

When my oldest child was one, I didnt think my husband and I were eating healthy enough, so I made separate meals for her. This solution worked out just fine since she was our only child and I had the time to make two separate meals. But now that I have 3 kids, cooking additional food would be insane for my much busier schedule. So I dont even go there.

And, guess what? Cooking one meal for the whole family has been working out pretty darn well lately.

At mealtime turn off the screens. TV, tablets, computers, and phones are huge distractions from eating. Let it be a time to disconnect from those things and connect with each other.

Dont fear that kids will starve. Its hard not to worry, but kids feel your fear and they will be less likely to loosen up. They WILL eat when they are hungry. Its okay. And dont forget, some kids have sensory disorders or other medical issues that make certain things unappealing.

Its all a process. If you notice your child hardly eats anything AND they havent gained any weight in over 6 months, you might want to ask their doctor. Otherwise, stay the course and it will probably even out.

Lastly, dont offer sweets as a reward. Youll get dessert if you eat your broccoli. That doesnt help build healthy habits in the long run. And dont potato pay them, Ore-Ida. Blech. Picky Eaters May Just Be In A Picky Phase

Remember, a babys appetite will change on a constant basis as will his likes and dislikes of foods.

A baby who is ill or teething may not wish to mash those favored finger foods with sore gums. That same baby may lose his appetite for a few days and then suddenly the typical appetite comes roaring back.

An infant who is busy exploring the carpet or the new soft-book she has received may be miffed when she is put into a high chair and offered food, even if it is her favorite carrot and pear dices.

Dont forget about the natural slow down of growth that babies go through. They are ravenous for a few days or a week or two and then suddenly they are barely eating. Babies who are coming out of a growth spurt will tend to eat less than they were during the growth spurt.

As your baby gets older, the appetite will naturally slow as he becomes less reliant on breast and/or bottles for his nutrition and requires less to sustain healthy growth and development.

Remember that as solids replace breast milk and/or formula, it becomes more difficult to realize how much baby is now eating. Chart the foods your baby is eating during a 5 day period and you may be surprised to find that your baby really is not as picky as you think.

Pizza With Leftover Veggies

Homemade pizza is a Friday night tradition in our house. On this particular night, I made Hawaiian pizza with a simple pizza sauce and mozzarella over a whole grain crust. I was trying to make it a bit healthier, but Ill never do that again! I think Ill stick to our favorite crust and sauce from now on, thank you very much.

I really should have given my 12-month-old deconstructed pizza so he could digest it better. A bit of cheese, some tomatoes, diced toppings, and some bread would be easier for a one-year-old to eat than thick slices of pizza, even if they are cut into much smaller pieces.

I served the pizza with leftover roasted veggies, but do you think he cared about them? Heck, no.

  • Vegetable/Fruit: Pineapple, diced tomatoes, roasted veggies
  • Grain/Carb: Pizza crust
  • Recipe from: Any pizza recipe you like, but this is our favorite
  • Ideas to change things up: Serve deconstructed where you give the baby all the elements of the pizza, but not the pizza itself serve with fresh fruit offer lots of different topping choices for everyone to make their own pizza

How To Become A Less Picky Eater

When you dislike most of the foods that you know are good for you, the idea of having a healthy diet sounds gross. Food is a major part of living too big to think about every single meal being an unpleasant experience for the rest of your life.

I know thats how I used to feel about it when I was a picky eater .

Whether its you or someone in your family, becoming a less picky eater is a big step, but not an impossible roadblock. There were two times in my life where I accidentally experimented on myself and discovered this was true.

Now you can learn from my experience rather than having to stumble upon the truth like I did.
