Ingredients

1 pinch freshly ground cardamom powder

Recipe

Steam carrots and beetroot using a steamer for 15-20 minutes. You can also pressure cook them together with very little water for 2-3 whistles.

Blend together cooked vegetables with a pinch of cardamom till smooth.

Pass through a sieve if needed.

This pumpkin and potato puree/mash is simple to make and perfect for babies sampling their first foods.

How To Reheat Or Thaw Frozen Baby Food

To thaw frozen baby food, I recommend taking the jar out of the freezer the night before you want to use it so it can defrost in the fridge overnight. If you need to use it right away, you can thaw it using a water bath. Some people will recommend microwaving the frozen puree using the defrost setting, but I prefer these two methods:

    • Defrost in the refrigerator: Place frozen puree cubes into a jar or babys serving dish, cover, and place in the refrigerator overnight. If you stored the puree in a jar or storage container, simply place the jar the fridge.
    • Water bath: Place frozen pureed cubes in a small container and set in another larger container with warm water. Replace the water as needed. Once defrosted, portion the food into individual bowls, cover, and refrigerate until serving.

Be sure to use any of the defrosted food within 48 hours of being defrosted and do not re-freeze.

    When Can Babies Eat Purees

When a baby can start on solids is determined by their own rate of development, which generally comes between 4-6 months of age. Some of the developmental milestones babies need to reach in order to start solids include: if your baby has solid control of their head and neck, if your baby has doubled in weight, and if your baby is reaching for or opening their mouth when you eat . Before you start baby on purees, you should consult with your pediatrician to make sure your child is developmentally ready.

Making your own fresh fruit purees is a food safety risk, unless you heat them first. Raw fruit purees are unsafe for babies to eat, because some raw fruit can carry pathogens. Therefore, you should heat the puree of raw fresh fruits to about 180 °F, or to a simmering temperature, and then cool. The Food and Drug Administration warns against giving young children unpasteurized fruit juices, also.
