Just How Good Are These
I must have been nervous thinking about my visit to Sister Schuberts home as I was making these Cinnamon rolls. First I dropped a spoonful of the Cinnamon Roll filling on my newly mopped floor. Just dont mop, that always happens if you mop. Then I dropped it again, the spoon and filling all down my shirt this time. And if that wasnt bad enough, I then flipped out a whole roll, Julie Roberts style, trying to get a gooey roll from the middle!
I ate it anyway. Theyre that good.
I realize that Sister Schuberts make Cinnamon Rolls now. But, this is an old family favorite and theres just something about the foods I enjoyed when I was little that warms my heart. We had these Cinnamon Roll Pull Aparts on holidays and special occasions.
These sweet rolls are very easy to make. It would be a perfect recipe for children or someone learning to cook to master giving them a little confidence in the kitchen. However, for young children, youll want to help them slice the bread.
First, allow the rolls to thaw completely in the refrigerator. Just put them in the fridge before you go to bed and theyll be perfect in the morning.
Homemade Dinner Rolls Ingredients:
Before we get to the full recipe below, here are a few notes about the ingredients that you will need to make this homemade dinner rolls recipe:
- Water and milk: These will serve as our base liquids for the bread dough. I used dairy milk, but you are welcome to sub in a plain plant-based milk instead.
- Melted butter: Which we will both bake into the rolls and brush on top.
- Honey: To add just a hint of sweetness.
- Active dry yeast: This recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of yeast. So if you are purchasing your yeast in 0.25-ounce packets, you will need slightly more than one packet.
- Flour: I have only tested this recipe with all-purpose flour. But if you try out different flours, please let us know how it goes in the comment section below!
- Salt: Which we will mix into the rolls to bring out all of those delicious buttery flavors. Feel free to sprinkle a bit of flaky salt on top of the warm rolls just before serving too!

How To Store Dinner Rolls
Let the rolls cool and put them into a glass or plastic container or zipper bag. They should last about 5-7 days in the refrigerator. Storing rolls at room temperature is the best way to store them. They will last 4-5 days. To reheat rolls in the air fryer, set it to 350°F and cook for 1-2 minutes until desired warmth is reached.

Sister Schubert And The Yeast Roll
Yeast Rolls can be such a source of Southern pride that even the best cooks shy away from these elusive delicacies. My grandmother made the best yeast rolls in the county, maybe this entire country. Although, I suspect that half of Lauderdale County would say that their grandmother made the best. . The truth is that there are just about as many recipes as there are grandmothers.
A Google search reveals recipes with shortening, recipes with lard, and recipes with butter. This alone can bring chefs to heated debate over glasses of wine and/or cocktails. I once asked John Currence, Butter or lard? He answered, For what? Some believe half-and-half works best .
Boil the milk, add eggs, dont use eggs, Carnation Milk makes an appearance in one recipe I have one thing they all say is serve hot.
Last week, I had the pleasure of eating yeast rolls from the queen herself, Sister Schubert. One of our great local schools, Riverhill, hosted a luncheon with Sister and one of our great local chefs, Betty Sims.
Sister told the story of starting her business on her sun porch.
However, inspired by Sister, I set about making my Gram Perkins rolls this weekend:
GRAM PERKINS YEAST ROLLS
1/2 cup shortening
Bring milk, sugar, and shortening/butter to a scald. Set aside to cool.
5 cups flour 1 heaping teaspoon baking powder3 teaspoons salt

Yes you can, thank goodness!! Sister Schubert dinner rolls can be made right in the air fryer.
The rolls go into the air fryer frozen little bricks and come out toasty and pillow soft, they taste just like homemade rolls. You can make however many you want, if you need dinner rolls for two or dinner rolls for a crowd.
Sister Schubert frozen rolls in air fryer are the best and cook up perfectly. There is nothing quite like quick dinner rolls.
Sister Schubert’s Cinnamon Roll Pull Apart Bread
- In a small bowl mix butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt until it’s combined completely.Cinnamon Rolls
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Allow rolls to thaw completely in the bag.
- When rolls are thawed, remove from pan without separating the rolls. Carefully cut through all the rolls horizontally so that you have 2 discs.
- Place the bottom of the rolls back in the pan.
- Using an off-set spatula or butter knife spread cinnamon mixture over bottom layer.
- Replace top of rolls. Cover with foil and bake15 to 20 minutes or until hot and desired browning has occurred on top.
- Remove foil and cool slightly, about 5 minutes.
- Drizzle with Cream Cheese Frosting if desired.

I no longer have to worry about trying to squeeze in a roast, a side dish, and bread into one oven for Sunday dinners. Now I make the rolls in the air fryer and save so much time.

My absolute favorite frozen rolls to use are the Sister Schubert rolls, but I also really like Rhodes frozen rolls. You can definitely use your favorite brand. The Sister Schubert frozen rolls I used were precooked, not the dough rolls that come in the metal pie tin. If you use the dough rolls, make sure to follow the package instructions and allow them to rise if they need to. I do also like Rhodes rolls in air fryer.

Tips For How To Make Dinner Rolls:
The full recipe is included below for how to make these dinner rolls, but here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind too:
- Be sure that your yeast has not expired. This is one of the most common reasons for why a batch of bread dough does not rise. Double-check the expiration date on any yeast that may be hanging out in your pantry. And if the yeast does not begin to puff and bubble up after 5 minutes once it has been added to the wet ingredients, toss out the batch and start over with new yeast.
- Double-check the temperature of the liquid ingredients. When heating the liquid ingredients , its essential that they be within the temperature range of 100-110°F. If the mixture is too hot, it can kill the yeast. If it is too cool, the yeast may not activate. The mixture should feel warm and not hot to the touch, but I always recommend testing the mixture with a cooking thermometer just to be sure.
- Dont skip the rise times. They are essential to helping the dough rise and create that soft and fluffy texture were going for.
- No worries about perfection. When portioning the dough into 12 rolls, dont worry about them all being perfectly equal in size. They will all bake up together in the pan, and if some are slightly larger or smaller, hakuna matata. 🙂

Rapid Rolls From ‘kitchen Confidence’
When I was in high school, my friends and I used to gorge ourselves on frozen Sister Schubert’s Parker House yeast rolls. The rolls are defiantly rich and yeasty with a soft, tender texture begging to be pulled apart into pieces and slathered with more butter. They’re a far cry from the kind of wholesome, naturally leavened bread I usually seek out, yet there is something deeply satisfying about the simple pureness of a good yeast roll.
Kelsey Nixon‘s rapid rolls in her new cookbook, Kitchen Confidence, offer that same satisfaction. Her rolls are intended to be a short-cut of sorts. By adding a ton of yeast to the dough , Nixon creates a roll that can be made, start-to-finish, in the time between getting home from work and sitting down for dinner. There’s no bulk rising time simply knead the dough, shape it, and let the rolls proof a bit before popping them in the oven. Like Sister Schubert’s rolls, Nixon’s yeasty creations are not particularly complex. However, their texture is still luxuriously soft and pillowy, and their flavor deeply buttery. Plus, these rolls make it easy to serve fresh-baked bread on command.
Why I picked this recipe: I was skeptical that yeast dough could be prepared this quickly, and had to try it for myself.
What worked: These rolls were indeed rapid, fully proofing in only 20 minutes. Their flavor is yeast forward, but well matched by sweet buttery richness.
