Whether Your Child Has Been Diagnosed With A Milk Allergy Or Lactose Intolerance It Can Mean A Major Diet Change For Your Family To Go Dairy Free
Taking the focus off of dairy can be difficult especially for children. Ice cream, chocolate, cheese and even yogurt seem to be diet staples for kids, and when milk is no longer allowed, it can seem like a major bummer.
Luckily, there are tons of amazing dairy free kid-friendly foods for you to dig in to. And, Ive rounded them up for you to try!
Why Dairy Free Snacks
If youre reading this article, youve probably got a child at home with a food allergy or intolerance so this information is old news to you, of course.
But maybe some of you are daycare providers, babysitters, or family friends looking for snack ideas in which case, it can be helpful to understand the background of allergies and intolerances and why choosing the right options can be so important:
Milk is one of the most common food allergies in children. According to Food Allergy Research and Education about 2.5% of children under 3 years old are allergic. When it comes to a milk allergy, the immune system sees milk protein as an invader and releases chemicals like histamine that cause reactive symptoms.
Symptoms can include diarrhea, rash, vomiting, and stomachache and can also progress into a severe, life-threatening issue called anaphylaxis. This is when there is a narrowing of the airways that can block breathing.
Allergic responses can get worse each time the food is consumed, so even if a child had a mild reaction the first few times its important not to give them any foods their allergic to as it could progress to a severe reaction.
Allergies and intolerances are not the same thing. For example, lactose intolerance is sometimes confused for a milk allergy, but these are two very different conditions.
Never fear. There are plenty of toddler-friendly snacks that are available to purchase or make at home!

Beef Or Turkey Sticks
Beef or turkey sticks are probably one of my favorite snacks for eating on-the-go. Whether its stashing snacks in the car, for hiking or camping, or just having something that doesnt need to be refrigerated, I love having these around for both myself and my son.
Find a gluten-free option you love, like these Chomps Sticks, and keep some handy.

You can find them in a variety of flavors like Original Beef, Jalapeno Beef, Italian Style Beef, Sea Salt Beef, Cranberry Habanero Beef , Original Turkey, Jalapeno Turkey, and Salt & Pepper Venison.
There really are so many options out there, its sometimes hard to do the homework to find them. I hope this list has been useful for you in coming up with ideas for what to feed your child on a gluten and dairy-free diet.
Is It A True Milk Allergy
According to Jenny McGlothlin and Katja Rowell, MD, authors of Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating, some parents think that their children are allergic when it is a lactose intolerance. In those cases, lactose-free milk, hard aged cheeses, some yogurt, and even chocolate milk are more readily tolerated.
Additionally, some children grow out of an earlier sensitivity and even allergies. Check with your doctor for more detailed information.

Tips For Removing Dairy From Your Childs Diet
1. Experiment with dairy alternativesIf your child consumes a lot of dairy and the idea of removing it from his or her diet sounds overwhelming, a great first step is to start experimenting with dairy alternatives. There are tons of dairy-free milk, cheese, and yogurt options available, and once your child finds a few he or she enjoys, the transition will be much easier. There are also lots of delicious dairy free recipes for kids that will allow your little one to continue enjoying meals, snacks, and desserts he or she already eats without consuming dairy.
2. Read labelsIf youre removing diary from your childs diet, be sure to check all food labels closely. Many prepared foods contain dairy, so its better to be safe than sorry.
3. Find other sources of calciumWhen removing dairy from your childs diet, its important to find other sources of calcium to ensure he or she doesnt become deficient. There are tons of non-dairy sources of calcium you can consider, including soy beans and soya milk, nut milks, leafy greens, sardines, canned salmon, and chia seeds. Many juices, cereals, and breads are also fortified with calcium. Talk to your childs doctor and/or make an appointment with a dietician to ensure your little one is consuming enough calcium to be safe.

Simple Gluten Free And Dairy Free Recipes For Kids
Being the parent of a child with allergies is not easy. Not by a long stretch. While there are certainly worse things that could happen, the constant worry your little one will put something he or she cannot tolerate into their mouths is a constant fear many parents endure on the daily. Also? Trying to find gluten free and dairy free recipes for kids that are easy to make and that actually taste good can sometimes feel impossible.
As parents, we want our kids to experience all of the joys life has to offer, and when their friends are chowing down on pizza, cookies, and cupcakes at birthday parties, we want them to have the same experience. And while friends and family might think a cheat day wont do any harm, they are sorely mistaken. All it takes is one small bite of an allergen to cause a severe and sometimes fatal allergic reaction, making it difficult for parents and caregivers of kids with allergies to relax.
From Zucchini Banana Oatmeal Pancakes to Paleo Pizza Crust, weve rounded up 24 of our favorite allergy-friendly recipes for kids who cant tolerate gluten and dairy.
