This cold spinach dipwith cream cheese recipe has been in the family for years. It’s made without mayo which I personally love and is a popular party dip that takes less than 7 MINUTES to whip up. I like to make this dip ahead of time and add it to a freshly cut bread bowl when guests arrive!

7 minutes!

That’s all you need to make this cold spinach dip! And maybe some hungry guests.

It’s one of those recipes that you’ll want to whip up again and again!

This recipe is the best cold spinach dip I have come across because it uses cream cheese and NO mayo which I dislike in dips.

Instead of the mayo, I use sour cream which is light, tasty and adds some tang. Any appetizer that is easy to make in advance and can be served cold is a winner in my house.

This dip is one of my most popular recipes for good reason.

I like to put this spinach dip in a sour dough BREAD BOWL. It looks so festive this way! Plus, you don’t have to worry about asking for your Tupperware back if you bring it to a party!

Then add some crudites, fresh pita or bread and you’re ready to serve!

How Long Can You Leave Out A Party Dip

Whenever you serve a help yourself dish like a party dip, you should always keep track of how long it sits at room temperature.

For most foods, the general rule of thumb is that a perishable item should not be in the danger zone for more than two hours. And by danger zone, this is usually at or just above room temperature.

Since this dip will be served warm, that should give you another 30-60 minutes before needing to keep track of the dip. So, in total, this dip can be left out for an absolute maximum of three hours, depending on the temperature of the room. However, be sure to still check the dip every now and then and make your best judgment.

Once you pass the recommended time, you can heat it up in the oven again.

For best results, Id recommend using a warming tray so that the creamy spinach dip stays warm and above the danger zone temperature.

  • Cream Cheese The cream cheese makes this baked artichoke dip so creamy and craveable. Learn how to soften cream cheese quickly.
  • Mayonnaise Mayo is also a great base for creamy dips! Olive Oil Mayo is my go-to.
  • Sour Cream Theres nothing quite like the creamy tang of sour cream for an added touch in a dip. I prefer full fat, but if youre trying to cut back this is an easy place to do it!
  • Chopped Spinach frozen spinach is best for this recipe, I like to buy the steamable packages.
  • Monterey Jack Cheese Fresh grated jack cheese makes this dip sooooo creamy! Avoid pre-shredded cheese, as its covered in a flour like substance that helps it resist sticking and melting.
  • Minced Onion adds a subtle burst of flavor.
  • Minced Garlic I find that buying pre-minced garlic is a great shortcut.
  • Crushed Red Pepper Flakes Crushed red pepper flakes in this recipe are not enough to make it hot, but just enough to spice it up a little.
  • Parmesan Fresh grated or store bought, your choice! Parmesan doesnt melt quite like the creamier cheeses, so fresh grated isnt as important.
  • Black Pepper For a little spice!
  • To Garnish: Diced Red Pepper I add a little diced red pepper or red pepper flakes to the top for a pop of vibrant color. Totally not necessary if youd prefer to skip!

What Goes In Spinach Artichoke Dip

As one would expect, the two stars in this dip are artichoke and spinach. I used jarred artichokes in brine but you can use frozen thawed or artichokes that come in oil.

The creaminess in this dip comes from cream cheese, sour cream and mayonnaise. I use this combination with most of my dip recipes because I find it yields the best texture soft enough to scoop without breaking the chips, but not sloppy and flavour .

In addition, this recipe has grated cheese for a cheesiness boost, garlic powder and parmesan to add an extra element of savouriness.

This is one of the simplest dip recipes I know. At least, a dip that I consider to be made from scratch, albeit I make this with frozen spinach, pickled artichokes and cream cheese. Rather than growing and chopping fresh spinach, harvesting and brining my own artichokes, breeding my own cows and making my own cheese.

OK, having written all that, it sounds totally hypocritical to say that I feel like this is made from scratch:, but I totally do! Is that reasonable?? Or unreasonable?!!!

Tips To Make This Recipe

  • Remove the excess moisture from the spinach before using. If you dont drain and squeeze it out well, your dip can become too watery.
  • Use full fat cream cheese for the best results. Low fat cream cheese can be thinner in texture, it will still work, but the results will be slightly different. Low fat cream cheese also has added ingredients.
  • Soften your cream cheese before mixing with the other ingredients. This will make everything easier to combine. Take it out of the fridge about an hour before you want to make the dip.
  • Make it your own! You can add other seasonings to this cream cheese spinach dip, like paprika or some chili flakes for some spice. Mozzarella works great for the topping, but you could use cheddar or Jack if you prefer.

Is Spinach Dip Hard To Make

Ive seen some recipes for spinach dip that require a lot of active time, with elaborate ingredients, overcomplicated instructions, and cooking on the stovetop. And while none of that is a bad thing, I personally like to take a more hands-off approach when I want to serve a hot dip.

For this recipe, you only need to do two things: thoroughly mix all ingredients together and bake them in a dish. Really, thats it! It will probably take you longer to cut the french bread than it will to get the dip ready for serving.

Plus, this method is ideal for a party, because if the dip ever gets too cold you can pop it back in the oven for 5 minutes to bring it back to melted cheesy goodness.
