Can You Use Frozen Pork Chops

This topic sparks a bit of debate in crockpot land.

Some crockpot users do it and feel it’s okay, but we don’t recommend it for safety reasons.

Here’s why. Slow cookers dont reliably get frozen meat up to a safe temperature evenly enough or quickly enough. Your meat will likely spend too much time in the danger zone , which opens the door for bacteria to grow. Not good!

That said, we know a lot of folks who put frozen meat in the crockpot regularly. If it’s a risk you’re willing to take, then go for it. Just increase the cooking time a bit.

Which Pork Chops Work Best In The Slow Cooker

Pork chops are a loin cut perpendicularly to the spine of the pig and usually containing a rib or part of a vertebra. There are four main types of pork chops: shoulder chops, rib chops, loin chops and boneless chops. The shoulder chops are made of dark-colored meat that has a lot of fat and connective tissues, and some blade bone. This cut has a lot of flavor, but it also contains a lot of tough gristle, so the meat does best when its tenderized or braised in slow, moist heat. Shoulder chops are well suited for the slow cooker.

You can use either bone-in or boneless pork chops for this recipe. The best pork chops for slow cooking are thick-cut chops with nice marbling throughout. You want a chop with plenty of fat on it to keep the meat moist during the slow cooking process. As mentioned above, look for a blade chop, shoulder chop or sirloin chop, if possible.

Tips For Making This Easy Dinner Meal:

Crock Pot Pork Chops
  • You don’t want to use quick cooking rice for this recipe – it would turn out too gummy. You can substitute the white rice for brown if you prefer. I haven’t tried it with cauliflower rice so I can’t say how that would turn out.
  • Make sure both sides of the pork chops are seasoned well with salt, black pepper and garlic powder.
  • It’s also important you get a good browning on these pork chops. Don’t cook the pork chops all the way through. Get the skillet really hot and quickly brown each side. This adds a lot of flavor and color to the final dish!
  • I like to serve this with some steamed broccoli as an additional side dish and maybe some FRENCH BREAD.

It can make a mean white chicken chili, fall-off-the-bone tender teriyaki ribs, creamy butternut squash mac and cheese, and now, perfectly tender pork chops cooked in and served smothered with a rich onion gravy.

Can I put raw pork in a slow cooker?

Technically, yes. But for optimal flavor, it’s best to sear the meat in a skillet first. This recipe calls for getting a nice golden crust on boneless pork chops then getting a head start on the gravy in the same pan.

Do I need to add liquid to slow cook pork?

Most slow cooker recipes call for cooking meat in some sort of liquid to maximize flavor and tenderness while also avoiding any burning. The same goes for these pork chops which are cooked in a super savory, thyme-infused gravy made from condensed cream of mushroom soup, chicken broth, fresh onion and thyme.

What is the safe temperature for pork?

According to the USDA, pork chops cooked to an internal temperature of 145°F are safe to eat.

How To Make Slow Cooker Pork Chops:

One of the questions I get asked most frequently is simply how to make pork chops in a crock pot. I think people love pork chops, but aren’t always sure exactly how to cook them so that they stay nice and juicy.

For the very best result, the slow cooker is the only way to go in my opinion!

    • You will want to season your pork chops really well. For my recipe, we use ranch seasoning mix, garlic powder, and pepper. I don’t add any extra salt, it isn’t necessary. I’d recommend making as directed without extra salt, then let people salt this dish at the table if that is their preference.

    • This Slow Cooker Pork Chop recipe calls for very minimal ingredients that combine for a truly delicious result. I always have everything like cream of chicken soup, brown gravy mix, ranch seasonings, and beef broth on hand. So, this is really a nice “pantry staple” recipe.

    • Thickening the gravy is optional, but, I do recommend it! After your pork chops are finished, you can simply remove them from the slow cooker very carefully. Then, stir together two tablespoons of cornstarch with two tablespoons of water and add it right to the gravy. Turn the crock pot back on high and you should have a nice thick gravy in just about 5-10 minutes.

    When Buying Pork Chops:

Bone-in vs. boneless: You can use either for this recipe, but in truth, bone-in pork chops tend to give the best results. This is because they tend to have little bit more marbling . So whichever cut you choose, look for a little marbling.

Thick and pink. Look for thicker pork chops . The thicker chops will cook nice and tender in the slow cooker and wont dry out. Also be sure to pick pork that has a nice pink or even pinkish red in color. Avoid pale looking pork chops or pork with any dark spots.

    • Crockpot liners- So handy and makes cleanup a breeze.
    • You can use bone in pork chops instead of boneless. I like to use what is on sale or already in the freezer.
    • I would not use the thin pork chops as they will fall apart when serving. We like using the thick pork chops as the meat comes out fork tender.
    • For an even creamier sauce, you can add in heavy cream.
    • An onion soup mix packet is full of flavor and can be added in place of chopped onion if you have it.

What To Do With Leftover Pork Chops

One of our favorite ways to enjoy leftover pork chops and gravy is to make an open faced sandwich. This is so easy and you can just use normal loaf bread.

Add the pork chops, gravy and mashed potatoes to a slice of bread. Open faced sandwiches are so delicious and very easy. The kids think they are eating an entirely new meal and dont even realize its leftovers.

Ingredients For Crock Pot French Onion Pork Chops

The list is pretty short for the ingredients! All of the ingredients I use are gluten-free. My husband has celiac disease, which means you are allergic to gluten. You will need to make sure to get gluten-free cream of mushroom soup and gluten-free french onion packer for this recipe. Typical cream of mushroom soup and the classic Liptons French Onion Packet both have gluten in them. But it is so great that there are so many great gluten-free options now!

If you dont like to use spice packets you can use this recipe for Italian Seasoning. I used it before they came out with the gluten-free french onion packet for my Italian Chicken which is also only 4 ingredients!
