Before we had neighborhood pharmacies and different cold medications, people relied on home treatments. They had to come up with their own solutions. Many home remedies are now topics of urban legend, but some home remedies actually work. Grandpa’s legendary hotty toddy will actually help relieve those cold symptoms. The recipe is even backed by science. Get the recipe and learn about it here!

Rum Hot Toddy As A Cold Remedy

Being ill can have its charms. It can be a reprieve from school, work and chores, an excuse to stay in bed doing nothing or catch up on idle hobbies and of course, drink hot toddies.

Why do hot toddies make us feel so much better, when were run-down?

    • The hot liquid hydrates, soothes and breaks up mucus, allowing us to breathe better.
    • A dose of vitamin C from the lemon
    • Warming spices to clear the passage ways and create an uplifting aroma
    • The drop of rum might have something to do with it too

If you too have a cold, take this prescription as needed and I hope you feel better:-)

Easy Hot Toddy With Honey And Lemon

Try dark rum or bourbon for this. Brandy or your favorite whisky will work, but dark rum and bourbon are our favorite. Hot toddies are best warm so you might want to think about warming your mug just before making the drink. Simply fill your mug with hot water then empty it.

The Winterized Gin Berry Smash Recipe

Developed by: Anthony Escalante, Bar Manager and Resident Mixologist, Wrigley Mansion

A nice herbaceous and fruity take on the ever-classic hot toddy is something I consider a wintry version of a gin berry smash, says Anthony Escalante, bar manager and resident mixologist, Wrigley Mansion. This involves steeping a nice fruit rouge loose leaf tea in hot water adding a bit of a new western gin with close to 1/4 ounce of agave syrup and some fresh lemon juice . This recipe also works wonders if you prefer something more traditional like an Earl Grey tea.

    Ingredients:

    • Heavy cream

    Directions:

    • Build in a 6-ounce glass. Fill 60 percent of the way up with hot water and add a bag of ginger tea.
    • Steep for 4 to 5 minutes.
    • Remove bag and top off with more hot water.
    • To garnish, float hand-shaken heavy cream over the top of the drink.
    • For an optional garnish, grate dehydrated lemon zest over the cream.

    Non Alcoholic Hot Toddy

One sip of this delicious hot toddy will cure any cold or illness!

Flu season is coming up. Are you ready to fight any cold or flu that may come your way? Our amazing non alcoholic hot toddy recipe is going to help you stay healthy and recover from any illness that crosses your path. The secret to getting better fast is inside the mug.

Hot Toddy For Cold Cough Flu & Sore Throat

Hot toddies are widely beloved for soothing what ails you: colds, coughs, sore throats, and even flus. When Im sick, Jay often makes me a tonic of freshly grated ginger, lemon juice, honey, and hot water which I drink throughout the day. Nothing soothes a sore throat like this concoction. But these apple cider hot toddies with vodka are 1000 times more delicious. You can enjoy them in sickness and in health.

    Heres how they help:

Honey is a natural analgesic and can be more effective in quieting a cough than prescription meds. I have firsthand experience with this! The vitamin C in lemon juice helps a body fight infection. Freshly grated ginger adds a zip that feels amazing on a sore throat. Here, freshly pressed apple juice adds natural sweetness. Apple juice is also loaded with health-promoting properties such as vitamin C, pectin to aid digestion, antioxidants to wash away free radicals, and a host of other goodies.

Whatever youve got, I can guarantee that this apple cider hot toddy tastes a whole lot better than Theraflu, and is probably more helpful, too.

Get more Spoon in your feed.

All students know that colds are as common on college campuses as pumpkin flavored drinks are in the fall. And once that sore throat rolls around, youre never going to want to get out of bed. The perfect remedy? A hot toddy.

This drink has all the relaxing benefits of tea but with a little kick. Hot toddies are easily customizable to your taste. Feel free to switch out the cinnamon for a pinch of cloves and nutmeg, or the bourbon for brandy. Its hard to go wrong here.

    1 cinnamon stick

Directions:1. Pour water into your pot and add 2 lemon slices. Heat it up until its boiling, and then add the cinnamon stick and the teabag.

    2. Add the honey to your serving mug, and pour the brandy over it.

    3. After the tea has steeped for a few minutes, take out the teabag and cinnamon stick. Pour your tea mix into your mug, and stir it until fully combined.

    4. Garnish with the last lemon slice and the cinnamon stick.

So while you lie on your bed and watch some Netflix, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a hot toddy. You may have to leave your bed to make it, but your throat will thank you for it.

Feeling sick? Here are some other resources to help you out:

Sweeten With Honey Maple Syrup Or Agave

Non alcoholic for soothing sore throats

When youre nursing a cold or flu, sweet flavors can be comforting. To sweeten your hot toddy, add a natural liquid sweetener, which blends more easily than granulated sugar. We like honey the best because it helps to coat your throat a bit, which can be soothing for a nasty cough. It also has a few health benefits!

Whether you add a bit of brandy or not, a hot toddy is a soothing way to nurse a cold and tasty to enough to sip long after youve recovered.

Why The Hotty Toddy Eases Symptoms

If cold prevention hasn’t been able to fight your cold off, you may want to make a hotty toddy. It is shown by science to help reduce cold symptoms. Whiskey is an effective decongestant. The alcohol dilates the blood vessels. The steam from the hot beverages works with the decongestant benefits of the alcohol and makes it easier for the mucus membranes to deal with nasal congestion. Whiskey can also relieve aching muscles and soothe a sore throat.

The combination of honey and lemon soothe a sore, scratchy throat and can ease a cough. Honey and lemon are both natural antiseptics and can help the throat heal faster. The honey will coat the throat and make it feel a lot better. Both ingredients contain antioxidants, and the lemon adds a bit of vitamin C. Cinnamon and honey are often taken together to help with coughs.

The whiskey also works like nighttime cold medicine that helps you sleep. Just remember, the recommendation is one hotty toddy before bed. Any more than that and you could wake up feeling worse than when you fell asleep. The recipe for Grandpas Hotty Toddy is pretty easy.

    Virgin Apple Cider Hot Toddy

Skipping the booze? No problem! You can either just leave the alcohol off for a light and luscious virgin apple cider hot toddy. Or try what Ive been doing and add a 2 ounce shot of Seedlip Grove a non-alcoholic distillation with aromas of ginger and citrus. It adds similar complexity as the honeycomb vodka with none of the booze.

Her famous hot toddy recipe with whiskey still gets me through the worst of my winter colds and sniffles. Heres the science behind the tradition, plus a recipe.

    What Is A Hot Toddy

Hot toddy | soothes sore throat wards off cold and flu symptoms

The hot toddy has been around since the early 16th century. The first toddys were actually called taddy which is a Hindi word meaning fermented tree sap. Tree sap was given to anyone who had a cold or illness as a medicine to cure their ailments.

The hot toddys that we know and love today are much different than those first tree sap concoctions. By the mid 18th century, an Irish doctor named Robert Bently Todd had taken the idea of taddys and adapted it to the modern world. He would prescribe his patients a mix of hot brandy, cinnamon and sugar water. This mix quickly became the go-to cure for a common cold. It was even given to children!

Today, any hot drink made with sprites, spices and sugar can pass for a hot toddy. Of course, we wanted to create a non alcoholic hot toddy. One that would taste even better than the original and still cure your cold without needing even one drop of liquor.

Typically, hot toddys are made with whiskey, adding even more power to the drink. However, you dont need alcohol to make a delicious hot toddy! Our non-alcoholic version is fantastic and effective.

Add Spices For Even More Health Benefits

Your hot toddy recipe for a cold should definitely include a dash of cinnamon because, among other things, spices stimulate saliva, helping a sore throat to feel better. In addition to cinnamon, you can try ginger, nutmeg, cloves or cardamom. Feel free to improvise, too, based on the health benefits youre seeking.

How To Make This Easy Hot Toddy

MAKE SURE YOU WARM YOUR MUG! Thats the key tip here. A lukewarm hot toddy is worse than a cold toddy . Heat your mug, either by filling it with boiling water before you add your toddy ingredients or by heating water in it in the microwave.

Use a normal-sized mug 8-10 ounces. We all drink out of huge mugs these days, but a toddy will water down far too much in a large capacity mug and you want your cocktail to get close to the rim of the mug. A cocktail that only takes up ½ the capacity of a vessel just looks funny.

After your mug is heated, add the hot water, the lemon juice, spices, and honey and stir to combine. Finally, add the whiskey and stir one final time. When Im at home I often heat the mug in the microwave one last time to make sure its hot before I sip it.

Easy Hot Toddy Recipe For Cough And Cold

Easy Hot Toddy Recipe (For Cough and Cold)

Its widely believed that the infamous hot toddy came from Robert Bentley Todd . He was an Irish physician well known for prescribing a hot drink that consisted of brandy, white cinnamon , sugar syrup, and water. His surname lent itself to the hot toddys we know them as today.

Over time, there have been different variations of this homemade cold and flu recipe. However, the principle always remains the same = combine a dark spirit, hot water, and sweetener. These days, its most common to use brandy/whisky/rum, hot water, cinnamon, and honey. The spirit is there to numb, the cinnamon is antiviral and an analgesic, and the honey is there to soothe. Water is also essential for getting over a cold or flu quicker and staying hydrated.

Its common to see other spices and ingredients used these days too including lemon or cloves. A hot toddy can provide relief from annoying coughs, sore throats and even give you that lovely warm feeling on a cold night that helps relax you and make you ready for bed. If you have a cold or flu, why not try this recipe which has added ingredients to help you fight a cold and feel better at the same time?
