Grand Marnier, on the other hand, is a well-known brand of French liqueurs. While Cointreau is a straight-up triple sec, Grand Marnier is a hybrid between Curacao-style liqueur and triple sec. Its made of distilled bitter orange essence, cognac, and sugar.

This orange liqueur brand was initially named Curaçao Marnier and was first produced in 1880. Among its products, Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge is the most popular. At a glance, the distinctive long-necked bottle of this liqueur also demands attention. Each bottle has the brands signature vertical red ribbon and recessed red-wax stamp.

When you hear classic cocktail, which drink comes to mind? Unless you’re a mixology buff, you probably think or Manhattan, or perhaps old-fashioned or gimlet. These drinks are tried, true and worthy of their fame, as are many others, but there’s one stone-cold classic cocktail that never seems to get mentioned: the sidecar, a bright, citrusy, shaken blend of Cognac, triple sec and lemon juice. Why is it so often forgotten? Maybe its sometimes-sugared rim gave the sidecar a bad name. Maybe people stopped stocking their home bars with Cognac. We can’t be sure when or why the sidecar went out of style, but we are certain that it’s time the cocktail made a comeback. Here, seven ways to make the drink at home.

Cointreau Vs Grand Marnier: Their Similarities

Before delving deeper into their differences, lets first discuss the similarities they share. For starters, both Cointreau and Grand Marnier are types of triple sec and popular brands of orange liqueur. To put it simply, these two are alcoholic beverages with orange and sugary elements. Moreover, both drinks originated in France in the 1880s and have an ABV of 40 percent.

Triple Sec Or Cointreau

The orange liqueurs Triple Sec and Cointreau have a relationship similar enough to that of brandy and Cognac: Cointreau is triple sec, which like curaçao, is made from the skins of bitter and sweet oranges.

While relatively interchangeable in most recipes, Cointreau is better balanced between bitter and sweet, typically of higher quality than your average Triple Sec, and at 40% alcohol , Cointreau better compliments the structural strength of the Cognac.

Another option would be Grand Marnier, an orange-flavored liqueur with a brandy base, and a similarly high ABV, or strength.

Why We Use Amaretto

We decided to try our Homemade Amaretto to make this sidecar cocktail because we just love the flavor that it brings to drink recipes. Not too sweet and a light almond flavor that compliments the orange liquor in this cocktail recipe. You can use Cointreau or Grand Marnier or Triple Sec. Triple sec bring the least expensive of the three but all will work just fine in this classic drink.

The History Of The Sidecar

How to make a Grand Sidecar | Cocktail Recipes

As most cocktail origins go, there are a few stories about who mixed up the first sidecar. One common story is found in “The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks” by David Embury. It says the drink was developed in a Parisian bistro during World War I by a friend who rode up to a favorite bar in a motorcycle’s sidecar. While there is speculation, it is popularly believed that the establishment was Harry’s New York Bar.

Another claim attributes Frank Meier who worked at the Paris Ritz Hotel. As Gary “Gaz” Regan pointed out in “The Joy of Mixology,” this was later disputed by a man named Bertin who worked at the Ritz after Meier.

The next story moves to Buck’s Club in London, the supposed home of the French 75. In his 1922 book, “Harry’s ABC of Mixing Cocktails,” Harry MacElhone credits the drink to Pat MacGarry, one of the great bartenders of the day. This was backed up in Robert Vermeire’s 1922 “Cocktails and How to Mix Them.”

It is important to note that MacElhone owned Harry’s New York Bar and that he also credits Buck’s Club for the French 75 in his book. While he was a popular bartender of the day, he was also honest and did not take credit for many of the drinks that are often attributed to him.

What Is A Sidecar Cocktail

A Sidecar cocktail is typically made with cognac, orange liquor and lemon juice. Weve taken the liberty to swap out the cognac in this drink recipe and replace it with Amaretto for a nuttier, almond flavored drink.

This Amaretto Sidecar Cocktail is one of my favorite sipping cocktails, to be enjoyed at happy hour with friends or just at home in your favorite chair by the fireplace.

Recipe Notes And Variations

  • Glassware: Serve a Sidecar in a coupe glass or a small martini glass.
  • Sugar rim: Spread some sugar on small plate, then rub a lemon wedge around the rim of chilled martini or coupe glass. Tilt the side of the glass in the sugar to lightly coat the outside rim of glass.
  • Boston Sidecar: Reduce cognac or brandy to ¾ ounce, add ¾ ounce light rum, and substitute ¾ ounce lime juice for the lemon juice.
  • Chelsea Sidecar: Uses gin instead of cognac or brandy.
  • Pisco Sidecar: Substitute 1 ½ ounces Pisco brandy for the cognac.

Ingredients For This Amaretto Sidecar

There are a few options when it comes to making this Amaretto Sidecar, here are the ingredients we chose to use!

Amaretto: We used our homemade amaretto but there are many good brands to choose from at the store if youre not into making your own.

Cointreau: An orange flavored liquor made in France thats used in a lot of cocktail recipes. Besides the orange flavor and smell, the liquor is clear in color.

Fresh lemon juice: Fresh lemon juice is a must when youre making a drink like this sidecar cocktail that only has a few ingredients. The tartness from the lemon juice will help to balance some of the sweet flavors in this drink.

Grand Marnier & Prosecco

To make a Grand Marnier and Prosecco, you need those two beverages, and you also need Aperol and orange juice.

Some of the greatest drinks in the mixological canon are deceptive in their simplicity. Consider the Old Fashioned, the Daiquiri, the gin preparing a cup of coffee in the morning is more complicated than making these drinks. But through the basic combination of two or three ingredients, with some ice thrown in for excitement, a perfect match of flavors can be achieved.

Add another drink to this list: the Sidecar. As with most cocktails, the origins of the drink are hazy , but this entrancing mixture of brandy, lemon juice and orange liqueur started making the rounds in the most fashionable watering holes in London and Paris during the 1920s. Very simple in structure, the Sidecar is complex enough in flavor to satisfy even the most jaded palates, but not so over-the-top with mixological gewgaws as to frighten away the casual tippler.

Two quick things to consider when mixing a Sidecar: first, quality matters. Use a cheap mass-market brandy or a cut-rate triple sec, and your Sidecar’s gonna suck.

This is a time when you want to break out a nice VSOP cognac, a good Armagnac or an excellent California brandy such as Germain-Robin. For the orange liqueur, pretty much only Cointreau has the right mixture of dryness and sweetness to make a Sidecar sing .

How To Serve A Sidecar Cocktail

Add both liquors and the fresh lemon juice to a shaker with ice. Shake well to blend the flavors and to chill the cocktail and then strain into a coupe glass.

Serve these sidecar cocktail with fresh slices of oranges as garnish to highlight the orange liquor in the drink. Orange and almond flavors play very well together, they are almost dessert-like without being overly sweet.

Sangria With Grand Marnier

Sangria is a wine cocktail that you can make with either white wine or red wine.

Typically, sangria is infused with various types of fruits, and it tastes even more wonderful when it is allowed to sit for a while.

This recipe is a red wine sangria that uses apples, lime slices, lemon slices, tangerines, orange juice, and oranges. Its made absolutely perfect with the addition of Grand Marnier.

My Desire A Sidecar With Blueberries

Rim your glass with lemon and dip into superfine sugar, let set. In a cocktail shaker, add 8-10 blueberries and muddle. If you dont have a professional muddler use a wooden spoon. Fill with Ice and add the cognac the Grand Marnier and lemon juice to the shaker and really give it a shake, at least 20 seconds. Fill your glass. Garnish with fresh blueberries and a fancy lemon peel. For the lemon rose, peel a long a piece of lemon rind as thinly as you can get it. Roll it into a circle and secure with a skewer, add the blueberries. So fancy! Just like a pro and Bobs Your Uncle! Cheers!

  • 1/2 ounce fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 8-10 blueberries plus more for garnish
  • long peel of skin of one lemon
  • granulated sugar

Instructions

  • Rim your glass with lemon and then roll in sugar, set aside to dry
  • In a cocktail mixer add 8-10 fresh blueberries and muddle
  • Add ice cubes
  • add cognac, Grand Marnier, Lemon Juice
  • Shake at least 20 seconds
  • strain into prepared glass
    For the Garnish

  • cut a long strip of the lemon peel then roll the peel into a tight circle, secure with a cocktail skewer and add fresh blueberries.
