For our martini glass we use a coupe glass. We love this cocktail glass for its beautiful shape, which became very popular after prohibition and through the 80s. A coupe glass is used for cocktails that are served, shaken or stirred, but without ice, making it perfect for martinis.

If you prefer a chilled martini glass go ahead and use that.

Pour the blueberry lemon drop into your cocktail glass and garnish with fresh mint leaves.

Blueberries are in season here in Florida and we actually just went to a local U Pick farm and got a bunch of these beautiful berries. Of course we will be making lots of blueberries smoothies, my Blueberry Delight Breakfast Casserole, Blueberry BBQ Sauce, Lemon Blueberry Bread and homemade blueberry vinaigrette but I decided a blueberry cocktail was also in order. I mean, when isnt a fresh and beautiful cocktail not in order?!

Blueberries are not only beautiful, but considered a super food, so why not add them to a cocktail?! Blueberries are naturally sweet so there is no need for added sweeteners to this Blueberry Lemon Martini.

I used fresh blueberry juice in this martini recipe. That means I actually made the juice myself. Which is actually really easy, dont get nervous. To make fresh blueberry juice you simply muddle the berries then pour the mixture over a mesh strainer so that you capture the juice.

What is muddling? Muddle is just a fancy word for smash. I put about a cup of blueberries into a large coffee cup and smashed them. I used my Pestle from my mortar and pestle set and it worked just fine, if you have a cocktail muddler that would work perfectly as well, and honestly I dont see why any spoon, fork or masher wouldnt work either.

I used approximately one cup of fresh blueberries to get 2 ounces of fresh blueberry juice for my Lemon Blueberry Vodka Martini.

California Grill Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini

Fleming

For 2 drinks, shake over ice:

  • 4 oz. Three Olives Blueberry Vodka
  • 2 oz. High quality Sweet & Sour Mix
  • .5 oz. Splash of Pomegranate Juice
  • Blueberry to drop in bottom

Now, mine looks NOTHING like the one at Cali Grill, but that is in part to the fact that my martini glasses were in the basement and not chilled. It does taste as close to perfect as I remember.

I dont know about you, but I havent been so thrilled to see Friday in a long time!

How To Make Homemade Lemonade

To make the homemade lemonade for this lemon drop martini you’ll need fresh lemon juice from about 9 lemons, 7 cups of cold water, and simple syrup.

First, squeeze the lemons to extract all of the juice. Pour the lemon juice into a pitcher or jar and set it aside. Then add cold water and your simple syrup to desired sweetness!

If you don’t have simple syrup, it is easy to make at home, just add equal parts sugar and water to a sauce pan and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.

How To Make A Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini

The fruit based martini truly is a thing of beauty. The martini on its own is a crisp and refreshing cocktail. But throwing fruit, specifically blueberries, into the mix makes them even better.

The Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini was most recently popularized as a featured drink at Flemings Steakhouse across the US. If youve ever had one, you know this recipe is to die for.

This recipe is similar to other fruit cocktails like the Blueberry Margarita, the Strawberry Martini, and the Strawberry Lemon Drop Martini because you must use a muddler.

A muddler is a device used by bartenders to crush fruits, spices, and garnishes to extract their juices, oils, and other flavors. It is different than blending. Blending chops fruit and makes smaller pieces while muddling gives you fruit juice.

Why We Love This Lemon Drop Martini

  • This cocktail was inspired by the blueberry lemon drop martini thats featured on Bonefish Grill, but we use more traditional lemon drop ingredients.
  • Adding limoncello really enhances the lemon flavor of the cocktail, and I just love that extra zip of flavor.
  • I find that fresh blueberry simple syrup is the best way to add blueberry flavor to this martini because it yields that smoothest texture, as opposed to muddled blueberries.

This refreshing twist on a classic cocktail hails from Fleming’s Steakhouse. Their Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini is perfect for summer, but also melts away the winter blues.

Although I enjoy a good beer or a glass of wine, I’m partial to cocktails if the mood strikes. When dining out they’re usually pricier than their alcoholic friends. And they can hit you like a ton of bricks if they are strong enough .

When they’re crafted with love, there’s nothing like a nice cocktail to take the edge off. Especially at the end of a rough day. It just feels better with a well-executed cocktail in hand.

I acquired this fruity cocktail recipe from a visit to Fleming’s Steakhouse. I actually ordered two of these off their cocktail menu because after tasting one, I couldn’t stop drinking them! This blueberry twist on a classic lemon drop is novel and delicious.

It has the tart and sweet balance of an excellent lemon drop with the vibrancy and gorgeous purple hue of fresh muddled blueberries. The exact shade of your martini will vary depending on the blueness of your blueberries. I’ve made this recipe several times and yielded slightly different shades, from pale blush to a more intense shade of violet.

Why This Recipe Works

There is something about the subtle sweetness of elderflower that I just can’t get enough of. And I’m not really one for a super sweet cocktail.

Elderflower adds just the perfect amount of sweet and smooth to a cocktail without being overpowering.

So be careful, this martini is so smooth, your glass will be empty before you know it.

Memorial Day weekend promises lots of fun in the sun. What better time to relax with a cool cocktail?

One of my favorite cocktails is a Lemon Drop Martini. The citrus twist of the lemon with the sweet sugared rim on the cocktail glass is the perfect combination for my taste buds. I recently discovered a martini that adds and extra layer of fun and flavor to the lemon drop martini. An Açaí-Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini!

Van Gogh Açaí-Blueberry Vodka is a combination of açaí berry and blueberry with hint of raspberry and almond flavors. Açaí is a South American palm tree that produces small edible blackish-purple berries. It makes a light lavender martini that is so pretty in the glass.

Ingredients For A Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini

Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini

This blueberry lemon drop martini cocktail is made with just a few ingredients: blueberry simple syrup, lemonade, vodka, and mint.

First, you can use store bought blueberry simple syrup or make your own with fresh blueberries. Some recipes use blueberry vodka but we prefer to use blueberry simple syrup. For example, Fleming’s steakhouse uses blueberry vodka in their famous martini but we like the taste of good quality plain vodka.

For the lemonade, I like to use homemade with fresh lemons, however store bought, zero sugar works just as well.

I used fresh mint from my herb garden, but any fresh mint will do for this cocktail recipe.

For the vodka, we like local vodka but use whatever good quality alcohol you love!

How To Make It

Rub a lemon wedge over the rim of a cocktail glass, and dip in raw sugar to create a sugar rim. Add 2 blueberries to the glass and set aside.

Next, in a cocktail shaker muddle 12 fresh blueberries. Add blueberry vodka , fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup.

I prefer to make my own simple syrup rather than purchasing it. Simply add equal parts sugar and water to a small saucepan. Heat and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Cool before using.

Add ice cubes to the cocktail shaker, cover the lid and shake vigorously. Next, strain it into your prepared cocktail glass.

Expert tip: I recommend straining it through a small fine mesh strainer in addition to the attached strainer in the shaker lid. Otherwise you will get blueberry skins and seeds in your drink.

How To Make Flemings Blueberry Lemon Drop Cocktail

Before making the cocktail, you will need to have some chilled simple syrup on hand. Simple syrup is easy to make by gently cooking equal parts sugar and water together until the sugar is completely dissolved. It is a very common ingredient in mixed drinks and will keep in the refrigerator for 2-3 weeks.

The other ingredients needed are fresh ripe blueberries, fresh lemon juice, ice, and your favorite vodka.

Special equipment you will need are a cocktail shaker , muddler, and fine mesh strainer.

Making the cocktail is as easy muddling the blueberries in the shaker, adding the remaining ingredients, then shake, shake, shake. Double-strain the shaken cocktail into your serving glass and enjoy!

Who Invented The Lemon Drop Martini

The lemon drop martini originated in San Francisco in the 1970s. It is said that a man named Norman Jay Hobday opened a fern bar called Henry Africa and that is where the lemon drop martini originated. Fern bars, characterized as upscale bars for singles decorated with hanging plants and ferns as décor, were very popular in the 1970s.

It is speculated that the lemon drop was named after the popular lemon drop candy for its sweet and lemony flavor.

A classic lemon drop is made with fresh lemon juice, triple sec, vodka, and a sugar rim with a lemon twist as a garnish. Fresh lemon juice is always best for this classic cocktail.

History Of The Lemon Drop Cocktail

Norman Jay Hobday, a former Vietnam veteran, transformed himself into a bar owner in 1969 when he opened Henry Africa’s Bar in San Francisco.

His place was the country’s first fern bar, decorated with house plants and fake Tiffany lamps. The bar became an instant hot spot, and fern bar was quickly a household name in the region.

But not only was his bar a success, but Hobday also invented the Lemon Drop cocktail during that time.

The exact year is unknown, but it must have been sometime in the early to mid-70s. And just like the fern bar concept, the cocktail spread across the region like wildfire.

Most likely, the cocktail got its name from lemon drop candy. It was usually either served in the classic version or as Blueberry or Raspberry Lemon Drop and became a favorite in San Francisco’s bars and saloons.

The hype surrounding the tart drink also led to a shot version. This got ordered frequently in clubs and bars in the 1990s.

Ingredients Of The Lemon Drop Martini

THE Wild Maine Blueberry Lemon Drop Martini

The Lemon Drop Martini is a tangy blend of Vodka, Triple Sec, lemon juice, and sugar.

To pronounce the citrus notes, Vodka Citron is a popular choice for the cocktail. You can get this lemon-infused spirit from many renowned Vodka brands like Absolut or Belvedere.

Triple Sec is the second boozy ingredient that brings these beautiful citric aromas into the Lemon Drop Martini.

It’s a fragrant, high-proof liqueur with an intense orange flavor. As for many other Triple-Sec Cocktails, my go-to brand for the Lemon Drop Martini is Cointreau.

The third citrusy element is lemon juice. Only use freshly squeezed juice for your cocktails. Store-bought citrus juice won’t deliver on that zesty, natural acidity you need for a perfect drink.

To balance all the sour components, add simple syrup to the mix. You can get it in most supermarkets. Or, if you want to save a few $$, make your own with this recipe for homemade simple syrup.
