Rice Krispies Easter Egg Treats with a Chocolate Surprise!

Well be working with one color of egg at a time. I recommend spraying your bowls and spatulas with cooking spray.

Open all of your eggs and arrange them on a baking tray lined with wax or parchment paper.

Grease the insides of the eggs with cooking spray. You may spray all the eggs at once, or, grease a paper towel and rub a bit on the insides of the eggs. The latter method takes more time, but it wont make the outside of your eggs slippery.

This Easter Egg Rice Krispie Treats Recipe is not only a delicious dessert, but it is also a fun activity to do with your kids.

Instead of making sugar cookies for Easter, you can use an egg cookie cutter to cut out Rice Krispie Treats into fun shapes. Then use icing to decorate them just like you would sugar cookies. How To Make Peeps Rice Krispie Treat Recipe

Step 1

Place the marshmallow candy pieces into the microwave for 25-30 seconds to melt them .

Step 2

Add the melted butter, and then stir until it becomes a smooth, pink, melted marshmallow concoction. If its still a bit lumpy, put it back into the microwave for a few seconds.

Step 3

Add the cereal, and spread onto a greased cookie sheet or piece of tin foil. Our egg-shaped cookie cutter isnt very deep, so I made sure that our cooled crispy layer wasnt too deep to be cut.

Step 4

Once it hardens a bit, help the kids cut out the egg shapes with the cookie cutter. If you dont wait too long, you can even re-form some of the outside bits into another egg shape. We were able to make 4 complete eggs with one recipe outlined above.

Step 5

Repeat with yellow chicks and purple bunnies. This can yield up to a dozen rice crispy treats, in 3 colors, ready for icing!

Notes:

Rice krispies treats are super sticky. Make sure to use parchment paper to let them set or wipe some cooking spray at the bottom of your pan.

If youre like me and dont like using the microwave you can use low heat to melt your marshmallow peeps.

Also, dont mix the different colors of peeps, you get a less than appealing color. I learned this the hard way.

Any cookie cutters will work if you decide to make other shapes.

Dont like sticky fingers? Add popsicle or sucker sticks.

If youre not a fan of peeps treats you can also use regular marshmallows in a microwave-safe bowl or melt with low heat.

Tips For Making The Best Colorful Rice Krispie Treats

  • Be careful not to over-heat the candy or chocolate or it will become too thick. It could also burn.
  • If using large marshmallows instead of mini, count out about 12-15.
  • Its easier to add color than it is to remove it , so start with a couple of drops of food coloring and work your way to as much as you want.
  • Gel food coloring is more concentrated giving it a more vibrant color. This means youll need fewer drops to get the same color as you would with more drops of liquid food coloring. Both are great, however liquid food coloring is generally cheaper.
  • If getting the kids to help, check the temperature of the Rice Krispie treats mixture before handing it over to the kids to form into shapes.
  • They will stick to the baking sheet if not lined. Parchment paper or wax paper is best to use.
  • Add some butter to your hands when molding to help keep it from sticking to your hands.
