Whats A Classic Moscow Mule

How to make: APPLE CIDER MOSCOW MULE

The Moscow mule is a classic cocktail invented in the 1940s. This drink may have been invented as a ploy to sell vodka, ginger beer and copper mugs. The mule is part of a family of cocktails called bucks: drinks made with ginger beer or ale, citrus juice, and liquor. So a Moscow mule is a vodka buck: and this apple cider mule could technically be called a cider buck.

Why Do Mules Have To Be Served In A Copper Mug

Moscow Mules are traditionally served in copper mugs, like the ones you can see in the photos, and thats not just to make them look pretty!

The metal cup keeps the cocktail delightfully cold while you drink it, and it means the ice doesnt melt as quickly which can result in the dilution of your drink.

How To Make The Apple Cider Mule

For the Apple Cider Mule, mix Kinky Vodka, apple cider, ginger beer, lime and apple slices, top with spiced bitters like cinnamon or allspice in a pitcher, and garnish with apple slices and cinnamon in your copper mule mug.

It tastes sweet and so refreshing, with a hint of tartness on the end from the ginger beer and apple cider. Its the perfect transitional drink into the new season!

What Can I Substitute For Fireball

  • Rum is made from sugar cane, and therefore does not contain gluten. There are cinnamon-flavored rums available. The usual Spiced Rum has some additional spices as well. Or you can make your own Cinnamon Infused Rum.
  • Similarly, most vodkas are gluten free, and you can also find cinnamon vodka. Smirnoff has a cinnamon rum in its Gold Collection, as well as a Cinnamon Churros Rum. You can also make it yourself, or try these apple cider cocktails with Homemade Apple Spiced Vodka.

Recipe Ingredients + Notes

Vodka. We use regular plain vodka not flavored vodka. We recommend using a decent quality.

Hard Apple Cider. This fizzy alcoholic apple cider gives the cocktail its signature apple flavor.

Lime Juice. Always use fresh lime juice for the best flavor. Squeeze by hand or use a hand held juicer which does a great job extracting the most juice.

Ginger beer. Non-alcoholic ginger beer is a carbonated ginger drink. It gives the traditional ginger flavor and some fizz. Spicy ginger beer has a far stronger ginger flavor than ginger ale which is why its used. Ginger ale can be substituted if desired.

Ice cubes.

Garnish: serve with an apple slice . A lime wheel or lime wedge is good too!

What Is The Best Ginger Beer To Use

For this recipe, I used Fever Tree which is a great-tasting option that can be found at most grocery stores or liquor stores.

However, I have also made this drink with spicy ginger beer and its so good. I love that extra kick as it balances out the tartness of the lime and the sweetness of the apple cider.

In a pinch, you can use ginger ale but I find most common ginger ales do not hold a ton of ginger flavor.

Why Are Mules Served In Copper Mugs

It all started with a marketing ploy to sell Smirnoff vodka, ginger beer, and copper mugs. Back in the 1940s, the three retailers couldnt move their products so they invented a cocktail that utilized all of them.

The Smirnoff Mule became quite popular in the 50s and 60s, and then got a resurgence in 1996 when it was reintroduced in a copper bottle. The copper mug became the iconic container for this cocktail since the cold metal keeps the cocktail well insulated and cold.

What Alcohol Goes In A Moscow Mule

Apple Cider Moscow Mules

A Moscow Mule is traditionally made with vodka. Like most cocktails, a mid-range vodka works perfectly. Theres no need for top shelf liquor when youre adding so many other ingredients and flavors, but you dont want the cheapest option either.

Not a fan of vodka? You can use these other liquors instead:

  • Tequila This is also known as a Mexican Mule.
  • Gin This is also known as a Gin Buck or Gin Gin Mule.
  • Rum This is also known as a Dark n Stormy if its made with dark rum.

Tips For Making It For A Crowd

Are you entertaining and dont want to worry about measuring out each drink? Heres what we would do:

  • Mix up 8 servings without ginger beer. That would be 2 cups vodka, 2 cups apple cider, and ½ cup lime juice.
  • In each copper mug, pour about ½ cup mixer and & frac13 cup ginger beer. The exact measurements are 4 ½ ounces mixer plus 3 ounces ginger beer. But you dont have to be that exact for an apple cider mule!

Was The Moscow Mule Invented In Russia

Legend has it the Moscow Mule was invented in 1941 in Los Angeles as a way to sell more vodka and ginger beer. Marketer John Martin was trying to sell Smirnoff vodka to Americans but wasnt having much luck. He stopped into the Cock n Bull bar owned by his friend, Jack Morgan, who was having trouble selling through his supply of ginger beer. So, the head bartender, a man named Wes Price, mixed vodka and ginger beer together, adding a squeeze of citrus, and, voilà, the Moscow Mule was born. The drink got its name from the fact that vodka originates in Russia and the ginger beer gives it a kick.

The copper mugs came about as a result of serendipitous circumstances, too. According to legend, a Russian woman named Sophie Berezinski, who happened to be in the same bar at the same time as Martin and Morgan, was looking for buyers of a mug she designed for her fathers copper company.

In an effort to market the drink, Martin would bring promotional copper mugs and Smirnoff vodka to bartenders across America. Thus, the tradition of serving Moscow Mules in copper mugs began.

You can pre-mix the vodka, apple cider, and fresh lemon juice for easy entertaining. Add the ginger beer just before serving to ensure the drink stays fizzy. If youd like to slice the apple garnish beforehand, you can do that, too toss the apple slices in a bit of lemon juice so they dont brown as quickly.

  • ¼cupapple cider
  • 1½teaspoonsfresh lemon juice
  • ¼cupginger beer
  • Crushed ice or ice cubes
  • Sliced apple

I do not recommend making this fall cocktail in advance. The cider will lose its carbonation and the cocktail will taste flat.

So How Can You Make These Apple Cider Moscow Mules

Apple Cider Moscow Mules

Basic Ingredients for a Mule

If youre unfamiliar with a Moscow Mule, its typically a combination of vodka, lime and ginger beer. For the different seasons though I love adding new ingredients to give it a bit of an upgrade from the norm! As I did in this Fall Moscow Mule!

My top tip for creating a Moscow Mule is to use good quality ingredients. Youll need good quality vodka, good quality ginger beer, fresh lime and an apple cider or apple juice that isnt overly sweet.

On top of that, youll need your spiced simple syrup.

How To Make a Spiced Simple Syrup

This spiced simple syrup is very easy to make, like most simple syrups. You start with a simple 1:1 ratio of sugar and water, and infuse it with a variety of different spices.

I use cinnamon quills, crushed cardamom pods, whole cloves, and a star anise. All these spices can be found in local supermarkets very easily and at a relatively low cost. Bonus, theyre also the basis for my German mulled wine, so its always a good idea to keep these spices in stock over the fall and winter!

To make the syrup, I heat the sugar, water and spiced together until the sugar has dissolved, then remove it from the heat and let it stand for 10 minutes to let the spices infuse. The smell is amazing and infusing the syrup really lets the flavours develop.

Putting it all together

Cheers x

Origins Of The Moscow Mule

A standard moscow mule is a cocktail made of vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice, usually garnished with a wedge of lime. It’s served cold with ice and while it’s perfect for hot weather, the strong, spicy ginger flavor makes it popular during the holidays, too.

It’s traditionally served in a copper mug, which helps keep the drink cold. People got worried about chemical leakage from the copper mug, so now modern ones usually are just plated on the outside of the mug with copper while the inside is stainless steel.

Like many recipes, the real origin is lost to history but legend has it that two American entrepreneurs got together with an actor to try to make the moscow mule famous. I guess it worked since we now consider the traditional moscow mule to be a classic cocktail!
