Saving Money & Other Options For Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip:

Trying French onion dip for the 1st time!

First of all, Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip beat the pants off any store-bought dip Ive hadand was much cheaper! The mark up on a store-bought dip is incredible. Watch for sour cream on sale, usually around every holiday. Sour cream keeps for weeks and stays fresher if it is stored upside down. It might be a bit messy when its opened, but try it and see if you dont notice a huge difference in the freshness.

As far as the actual Liptons Onion Soup Mix for this dip, check for your spices and herbs in the bulk section of the store and they may very well cost less. The best part of that homemade mix is that you can control the ingredients, especially the bullion. Go for something inexpensive or if its your jam, go for high end organic, or something in between. And if you dont want to make your own Liptons Soup Mix, youre always welcome to just buy a packet.

Now, Im not going to ever imply that Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip is an absolute match to my recipes with the slowly cooked caramelized onions, but it has a definite place in my repertoire of Onion Dips and I know Ill probably be making my Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip a lot more often than those that take so much work and time.

There is nothing better with crispy, salty potato chips than cold and creamy French Onion Dip! Skip the soup mix and make your own delicious dip! One dip of the chip and youll fall in love!

Potato chips and French Onion dip at times have been my Friday night date. I should be embarrassed to admit that but Im not. Im sorry but I love those salty, crispy chips and that creamy oniony dip. Sure my thighs love it even more but some things well, are worth it. Now, this doesnt mean its a frequent thing in my house. God no! If that were the case I wouldnt fit in the house. Everything in moderation. But Ill be honest, when it comes to this dip, I have to use all of my willpower.

Now I love certain pre-made French onion dip but I honestly prefer homemade more. Its creamier. I dont want to dip into it and have the dip just glob on the chip. No, I want it to dunk into something creamy, rich and oniony.

Growing up Mom would make her own French Onion dip. Her first recipe was sour cream, mayo, freshly chopped onions, and some spices. I HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATED it. I mean who puts fresh raw onions in a dip? GAG. Sorry, Mama, I love you and everything but that was nasty. Well, then the whole dried French onion soup packets came out. Mom I swear had cases of that stuff. It went in EVERYTHING.

Ill admit it. I actually like the Lipton onion mix stuff. You know, the stuff in the envelope that can be used to make soup or dip? Ive never used it to make soup but as a dip it tastes pretty good. Tear open the envelope, pour the contents into a bowl of sour cream, stir, refrigerate for 30 minutes, pull out a bag of your favorite potato chips, sit back and *crunch, munch, crunch.*

BUT you know how it is with most pre-prepared food items. The list of ingredients always includes strange things that really just dont belong there. So if you can make the same thing without all the junk that tastes just as good or better, plus is way cheaper to make yourself, why wouldnt you make it, right? Right!

Heres a copycat recipe version of the dry French onion dip mix you can throw together in 2 minutes and youll love the results.

And it also makes a cute little gift idea.

Its as simple as combining a few dry ingredients together and then mixing it in with the sour cream. It only takes a couple of minutes to put together, but you can also make a few dried dip mixes in advance to have on hand when you need them. This recipe is the equivalent of one envelope of dried onion soup mix.

    Lets get started!

Combine everything but the sour cream in a small bowl. I use msg-free beef broth granules.

Add the dip mix to the sour cream in a medium-sized bowl.

Serve it with potato chips or veggies. Enjoy!

Hands down, the BEST thing to dip in Onion Dip is plain crinkle cut potato crisps. This is an American thing that hasnt yet made it across the waters.

And it might sound strange to some people, dunking potato crisps in dip.

But trust me. For French Onion Dip, plain potato crisps are the BEST. Better than corn chips, better than crackers, better than bread. It beats em all! Nagi x

    What Is Au Jus

What really sets the French dip sandwich apart is the au jus. Au jus is a French term for in juice. For the sake of this recipe, the beef is cooked in a juice made with onion soup and beef broth. The beef-flavored juice is then set aside and used to dip the sandwich into. It is absolutely fantastic!

    Homemade French Onion Dip

A major taste component of the mix is the Herb Ox sodium free beef bouillon. It is definitely the ingredient that makes it get even close to the dip made with Lipton onion soup packets. French Onion Dip Recipe

French Onion Dip does not have to be super challenging to make. However, one trick to make it stand out is to use authentic Swiss Gruyere Cheese! Trust me on this one. Its the best all-around cheese for baking because of its firmness and anti-stringiness if that is even a word. It is now, I guess. It also has a nutty flavor that is delicious! If you cant find Gruyere, you can use a French Comte cheese. Regular old Swiss cheese you find in masses at the grocery store may be substituted, but beware! The texture is different, and it may not give you that dip that stands out from the crowd.

Besides the Gruyere cheese, here are the other ingredients you need for the French Onion Dip. And they all work together beautifully!

    Low Sodium French Onion Dip

Use this Low Sodium French Onion Dip that is a welcome addition where a dipping condiment is needed. I grew up with this dip when my mom made this with the Lipton onion soup packets to go with a snack of chips or cut vegetables. I think I have achieved nearly the same taste or at the very least better than any pre-made store brand.

    French Onion Dip Ingredient Notes

    • Butter: Helps the onions caramelize in the skillet. Instead of butter, olive oil also works.
    • Onions: Cant have French onion dip without onions! I love the flavor of sweet onions, but yellow onions are another option.
    • Sour Cream: The base of the dip. Full-fat gives the best flavor and texture, but light sour cream or plain Greek yogurt can be used instead.
    • Cream Cheese: Adds richness. Instead of cream cheese, use the same amount of mayonnaise or mascarpone cheese.
    • Parsley: Adds a welcome freshness! Chopped chives or green onions are also a delicious choice.

What onions are best for French onion dip?

For traditional French onion dip, use sweet onions. In a pinch, yellow onions are another great option.

    Can I use raw onions?

I dont recommend it. For that classic sweet flavor of French onion dip, caramelize the onions before adding them to the dip.

How can I make this dip healthier?

I much prefer to use full-fat cream cheese and sour cream for dips as they have a richer texture and flavor. You can certainly use low-fat alternatives, but it wont taste as decadent.

Is French onion dip gluten free?

Yes, this is a naturally gluten free recipe.

Making Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip:

So there is nothing to making your Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip. Just mix it up, taste it and make sure you put just the right amount of the mix in the sour cream for your tastes and let it sit for a while. Preferably about an hour or so in the fridge if you can stand to wait. That softens up those onion flakes a bit and melds all those flavors together.

Do you live in one of those areas of the country where the only sour cream you can buy is the thinner sort? That used to be the case here in Minnesota, so I dont know if thats a thing where you live. If it is or if you dont want to shell out the big bucks for a premium brand of sour cream, line a strainer with a paper towel or cheesecloth and strain it in the fridge for an hour or more until the consistency of your sour cream is nice and thick.

    Tips For French Onion Dip

Onions: Be patient when caramelizing the onions. It takes about 20-30 minutes to caramelize thinly sliced onions. Theyre caramelized when they turn a dark golden brown and taste slightly sweet. Its well worth the wait!

Cream Cheese: Room temperature cream cheese combines more easily and creates a creamier dip. Take the cream cheese out of the refrigerator before you begin prepping the onions so it has time to soften.

How Do You Cook With Homemade Onion Soup And Dip Mix

To make soup the general proportion is one cup of hot water to 1 ½ teaspoons of this Onion Soup and Dip Mix. Mix and allow to sit so that the ingredients dissolve and rehydrate. You can, of course, add more or less to suit your tastes.

To make onion dip combine about half of this recipe in a pint of sour cream and stir to combine. Again add more or less to suit you tastes. Allow the dip to chill for several hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the dried onions, garlic and parsley to rehydrate. Then grab the chips and dig in!
