Chocolate Protein Shake Ingredients

Alright, so lets talk ingredients. To make this homemade chocolate protein shake, you will need:

  • Milk: This serves as the liquid base for the smoothie. I usually use low-fat dairy milk.
  • Protein Powder: This majorly boosts the protein content of your smoothie. If you can, use an organic and natural protein powder. Select one that is free of any additives, fillers, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or sweeteners. I love and use this one from Thrive Market.
  • Banana: This gives your smoothie a luscious, creamy consistency. It is also a great source of potassium and dietary fiber.
  • Cocoa powder: This adds rich, natural chocolate flavor. Be sure to use unsweetened, natural cocoa powder in this recipe.
  • Honey: This adds natural and unrefined sweetness. Not all packaged honey is created equal, so I recommend using one that is 100% pure, raw, and unfiltered for optimal health benefits. I use this one from Thrive Market.
  • Ice: This helps thicken the shake. However, if I dont have any ice in the freezer, I just make my protein shake without it.
  • Vanilla extract: This adds just a hint of warm, sweet vanilla flavor. Make sure you use the real, natural stuff and not anything artificial.

The ingredients Ive linked to above can be ordered from Thrive Market, which is an amazing online store that sells healthy, organic food and natural products at 25-50% below retail prices. I like to think of it like Amazon meets Costco meets Whole Foods .

Double Chocolate Protein Shake Recipe

Heres a simple yet delicious protein shake recipe you can make anytime in as little as 5 minutes. A single serving of this shake has a whopping 38 grams of protein!

To make this recipe, add ½ a cup of unsweetened almond milk, ½ a cup of plain Greek yogurt, ¼ a cup of frozen raspberries, 1 scoop of chocolate whey protein powder, 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 tablespoon of almond butter, 1 tablespoon of chia seeds, ½ a teaspoon of vanilla extract, liquid stevia , and ½ a cup to 1 cup of ice in a blender and blend. When all the ingredients are blended into a smooth mixture, its ready to be served.

The Greek yogurt, unsweetened almond milk and almond butter give your shake its rich, creamy texture. To cut through the richness of this weight loss shake, frozen raspberries are added for its slightly sour and sweet taste. Of course, this wouldnt be a double chocolate protein shake without chocolate flavored whey protein powder and unsweetened cocoa powder. We highly recommend that you use a whey protein concentrate or whey protein isolate for this recipe. For added texture, you can top your shake with chia seeds instead of blending it together with the other ingredients.

Youre going to love the flavors of this wonderful double chocolate protein shake. Its a staple recipe that pairs perfectly with any weight loss diet and best of all, it only takes 5 minutes to prepare. Its so good, you wouldnt believe that youre dieting!

Pro Tip: Pour The Water Then Add Powder

Let me offer a single tip before you get started with this protein shake recipe: Pour the water into your glass before you add the protein powder. When I first started with this recipe, I would scoop the protein powder first. But this made it difficult for the powder to dissolve. I would chug the whole thing only to find protein powder clinging to the bottom of the glass.

When I add the water first, though, the powder dissolves much more easily. Im able to get all of it in one long swig, which is nice.

Types Of Protein To Consider

Before we break down 4 quick and simple recipes, lets talk about protein since this is obviously the most important ingredient in a protein shake.

For both our chocolate and vanilla recipes will be using Dioxymes grass-fed ultra whey protein. Dioxyme is a small-batch craft supplement brand producing formulas developed by physicians with honest, minimal ingredient lists.

Were using whey as it has consistently been proven to be the most biologically available protein and the one most effective for guys looking to tack on muscle gains and increase strength.

Plus, with Dioxymes formula, youre investing in a clean-burning whey that comes from grass-fed pasture-raised cows without hormones or antibiotics. Thats a major win compared to the caution tape-wrapped, additive-riddled tubs of junk smeared all over the market today.

Dioxyme goes so far as to add a digestive enzyme to their whey protein. You can wave goodbye to the disgusting stomach gurgles coming from your gut while you fire off your first few morning emails.

If you want to switch up your protein and try something plant-based, theres loads of options for that too. Consider Orgain as a reasonably priced, effective whey alternative.

Most plant-based powders consist of pea protein as the main ingredient. However, brown rice protein and hemp protein are two other tremendous protein plant-based sources to consider. Check to see how you digest pea protein and go from there.

Add Extra Nutrients To Your Chocolate Protein Shake

Want to make your shake super satisfying and load it up with vitamins and minerals? Here are some nutrient-rich protein shake add-ins to try:

  • Seeds. Ground flaxseeds, chia seeds and/or hemp seeds are a great source of healthy fats, fiber and minerals. I suggest up to 1 tablespoon of any of these or a combination.
  • Greens. Spinach is my favorite leafy green to add to smoothies and shakes. Add 1 to 2 cups and, I promise, you wont even be able to taste it. You can also try baby kale, Swiss chard, arugula, or beet greens. However, in my opinion, spinach is the best. It blends well and is more undetectable than other greens.
  • Other veggies. Try adding different veggies to your smoothie. My favorite is frozen cauliflower, which will make your shake extra creamy. One sliced carrot pairs really well with frozen pineapple and vanilla protein powder. And cucumber slices can make for a super refreshing smoothie! It pairs really well with mango, peach, or pineapple.
  • Extra protein. In addition to or instead of protein powder, you can add protein to your smoothie with Greek yogurt. I love using fun flavors to go with whatever fruit Im using. Peanut flour is another option, which not only will up the protein a bit, but also add wonderful flavor.

Add Extra Nutrients To This Chocolate Protein Shake:

Its easy to add extra vitamins and minerals to any shake or smoothie by adding some nutrient-rich ingredients. Here are some suggestions:

  • Ground flaxseed add up to about a tablespoon to give your shake a boost of fiber, healthy fats and antioxidants.
  • Chia seeds you can mix in up to a tablespoon of chia seeds to give your shake extra healthy fats and fiber.
  • Hemp seeds another seed that will add extra healthy fats, omegas and minerals.
  • Oats rolled or quick oats can be blended in your shake to really give it staying power! You can add up to about 1/3 cup of oats. Do not use steel cut oats, as they will not blend well.
  • Avocado adding about 1/4 or 1/2 an avocado adds healthy fats and will make your shake extra thick and creamy.
