What Is Apple Crisp

Not everyone grows up eating apple crisp.

Apple crisp is an apple dessert that has a streusel-type topping. It is usually baked or made in the slow cooker. The topping will typically contain oats and sugars and cinnamon.

There are many variations of apple crisp. It is a great way to use up extra apples and I feel like it is easier to make than apple pie.

The Best Way To Buy And Store Apples

Select firm apples that have no bruises or blemishes. Store apples in the fridge as they will stay fresher and keep their crunch for longer. The humble apple is one of the most versatile fruits. Whether it’s adding a fresh, sweet crunch to a slaw, served with roast pork or used to make a classic apple pie, apples are great to enjoy all year round.

Three reasons why you should eat apples

  • Enjoy the whole apple, including the skin to get all the nutritional benefits as most of the antioxidants and other nutrients are in the skin.
  • Apples are packed with fibre, are low GI and are also a source of antioxidants to help boost your health.
  • In Australia, we can buy tasty, crisp apples all year around because cold storage is used to store the fruit for short periods of time once picked. Apples are actually picked and harvested during January to May.

I often end up with a lot of apples that don’t get eaten. Although they are purchased with the best intentions I am not that much of a fruit gal. Honestly, I’d pick veggies over fruit any day. In fact, my trick to lose weight on Weight Watchers was to tell myself I could only eat fruit in the evening, if I was really that hungry. I was rarely that hungry….

But I hate to see food go to waste and eating apples in baking is an entirely different thing than eating them straight up. Wouldn’t you agree? That’s why I created this Weight Watchers friendly Apple Crisp! It’s 6 WW points on my plan, but you can click HERE to see how many points it is on your plan!

Typically, apple crisp with oatmeal is 10 points on the blue plan, and although you may find some lower point apple crisp recipes out there, they generally contain artificial sweeteners. I don’t use artificial sweeteners in my WW desserts, but I was still able to bring this down to 6 point on my plan, which is the same amount of points as the original apple crisp recipe in the 2009 edition of Weight Watchers magazine. I achieve that by using water as a filler and a little less sugar.

How To Make Ww Apple Cake

Grease an 8-inch round cake pan and preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. While your oven is preheating, slice the apples into thin wedges. I used about 1 1/2 Granny Smith apples for the cake you see pictured you are welcome to use more if you are craving some extra fruity texture.

In a medium-seized mixing bowl, cream together the applesauce, avocado oil, vanilla bean paste, and sugar. After those ingredients are completely combined, mix in the eggs one at a time.

In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Slowly pour this into your applesauce mixture and stir to combine.

Pour the batter into your prepared cake pan. Layer the top of your cake with concentric circles of sliced apples. Sprinkle the apples with a dusting of raw sugar .

Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-45 minutes. The apple cake is done when a toothpick or sharp knife inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.

Allow your spiced apple cake to briefly cool in the pan before transferring it to a wire rack to finish cooling. Slice and serve maybe with a dollop of ice cream on the side.

Does Weight Watchers Have A Gluten Free Program

While Weight Watchers doesnt have a program specifically designed for a gluten free diet, one of the three diet plans you can choose from is perfect for anyone who is gluten free! The program has three different programs designated by colors green, blue, and purple. Each offers its own set of zero point foods. While all the plans can accomodate a gluten free diet, the purple plan is especially great for anyone whos gluten free!

French fries might not be the best choice when youre watching your weight, but roasted potatoes are fantastic as a side dish.

Theyre tender, crisp on the edges, and being baked, theyre practically healthy. So much so that theyre on the zero-points lists.

Of course, these also include olive oil, garlic, rosemary, and salt & pepper, so this isnt a totally zero-point dish.

Corn fritters are sunny, sweet, crisp, and go well with everything from salmon to roasted pork.

These also include zucchini for an added kick of zero-point goodness.

Stary by whisking the eggs with melted butter and milk, and remember to use skimmed milk to cut down on the calories.

To that, youll add the dry mix followed by corn, cheese, and zucchini.

To keep the zucchini from making these too wet, try sprinkling some salt over the top and leaving it in a strainer to drain.

Then, lightly squeeze it with a paper towel.

In my opinion, takeout always tastes so good because someone else made it. Its naughty, cheap, lazy, and just what youll need after a long week.

But even if youre trying to watch calories on Weight watchers, you can still indulge.

Beef and broccoli are pretty healthy, after all, and since this isnt coated in a thick batter and then fried, you can have an extra spoonful.

How To Make A Healthy Apple Crisp Topping

There are a few different options when it comes to making a healthier topping for apple crisp. Since I still want all the classic flavor of a traditional crisp, I still like to make it with rolled oats, butter, brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Basically, I just use less butter and sugar than is traditionally called for. The crisp topping still comes out crumbly and delicious, and you really want even miss the extra butter and sugar.

Another option, if you want to make a crisp without refined sugars, is to substitute in maple syrup for the granulated white and brown sugar. The end product will have a delicious maple flavor but it will not be quite as crunchy as a version made with sugar.

For those looking to swap out the butter, my favorite substitution is to use coconut oil. You can use refined coconut oil if you don’t want any coconut taste or unrefined if you want to taste the coconut flavor.
