What Is A Sugar Scrub And Why Should I Use It

A sugar scrub is pretty much self-explanatory. Its a body scrub made primarily of sugar. The sugar is typically paired with a humectant for moisturizing and a botanical or essential oil for fragrance and aromatherapy.

There are a number of benefits to exfoliating with sugar scrubs, including that they can slough off dry skin and help with acne, explains celebrity aesthetician Joshua Ross of SkinLab. The sugar granules gently buff your skin as you rub it across your body while the oil moisturizes.

One caveat: Ross adds that its important to use very fine-grain sugar, as using coarse sugar can lead to small microtears on your skin.

Skin care expert and founder and CEO of Beauty Kitchen Heather Marianna delves deeper into the benefits of using sugar scrubs.

Not only are they luxurious and smell delicious, but sugar scrubs are also made using common, natural ingredients in your home and therefore less expensive than other exfoliating products. Unlike microbeads, sugar dissolves easily and is also safe for the environment.

Using the proper ingredients in your DIY sugar scrub can hydrate the skin and create a dewy glow as well by exfoliating dirt and dead skin cells, unclogging pores, stimulating blood flow, and lightening the appearance of scars and unwanted marks, she adds.

Adzuki Bean Face Scrub

When you’re in the mood for something a little more unique, turn to the adzuki bean face scrub. Adzuki bean powder is a staple in Japanese beauty products, and it is meant for the deepest clean of any skin type. According to Sobel, the chemical makeup tightens, softens, and removes dead skin cells and excess sebum from pores.

All you need is to mix the powder to warm water until they make a thick paste, though you can add rice bran for a bit more exfoliating power . “Finely ground rice bran or rice powder can certainly be used to exfoliate the skin, and because it is an antioxidant, it can provide anti-inflammatory benefits. This can prevent skin aging, reduce UV light damage, improve skin cell growth and leave skin brighter overall,” says Sobel.

Oatmeal And Yoghurt Exfoliator

The almond oil in this diy face scrub makes it excellent for dry skin, leaving it feeling soft and smooth. Leaving out the almond oil will give you a gentle but deep cleaning facial scrub suitable for anyone suffering from acne.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon Sweet Almond Oil

Method:

  • Mix all the ingredients together and leave for 5 minutes allowing the oatmeal to soften.
  • Lightly rub the mixture into your face avoiding the eye areas.
  • Continue to massage into the face for about 5 minutes before rinsing off with warm water.
  • When To Use A Sugar Scrub

Most people aim for twice a week with their sugar scrub. That gives the new skin time to grow, mature, and then reach the end of its cycle when it needs to have its own scrub action. The key is to be gentle each time. You are just taking off the very top layer of dead skin. You are giving the new fresh skin beneath its chance to reach oxygen and to do its job of maintaining the bodys health.

Performing a sugar scrub exfoliation helps ensure that any moisturizers or other treatments work most effectively. Those lotions no longer have to fight their way through the dead skin layers to do their job. They have full and direct access to healthy skin layers.

Its also important to note that the sun now has more direct access to the tender healthy skin after a sugar scrub exfoliation. If youre going out into a sunny environment, make sure to put on sunscreen. You want to ensure the new skin is protected from the UV rays.

How To Make A Sugar Scrub

Now that you have the ingredients selected, lets talk about how to make a sugar scrub.

  • Grab a bowl and fill it with 1 cup of sugar.
  • Add between 3/4 1 cup of oil* into the sugar. If you prefer a drier scrub, do less, and if you want a more oily scurb, add more. This is purely based on personal preference in many cases. One thing to keep in mind that the more oil you add, the more moisturizing benefits youre likely to get.

  • If your oil turns out too dry for your liking, add some more oil. Too oily? Add some more sugar.
  • *a note about coconut oil since coconut oil is a solid oil, you want to use at least equal amounts of sugar to your oil.
