- Paleo Diet. The paleo diet excludes grains, dairy, refined sugars, and other ingredients that may be problematic for people with Crohns disease. Although research is lacking on going paleo for Crohns, anecdotal evidence suggests it may help improve symptoms.
- Exclusive Enteral Nutrition . EEN exclusive feeding through a nutritionally complete liquid diet is one of the most studied dietary interventions in people with active IBD. Research shows its quite effective for inducing remission in both kiddos and adults. Note: this is a short-term treatment.
- FODMAPs diet. The FODMAPs diet eliminates certain types of carbs that may cause digestive symptoms for 6 to 8 weeks. This is followed by a reintroduction phase. This diet may be helpful for reducing Crohns symptoms like diarrhea and bloating.

Diagnosed with Colitis when she was 13, London-based recipe developer Nell Gordon-Hall is using her culinary skills to create exciting foods that suit her dietary requirements, after a decade-long journey of self-discovery with her body and diet.
After her diagnosis, Nell spoke with a nutritionist who recommended certain foods, but gave her little support or information to help her manage her condition.
“She didn’t give me much advice on what I should try and cut out or what could be good for me”, Nell explains.

Living with Colitis
At first, Nell tried to keep her Colitis under control by relying solely on the medication that she had been prescribed. However, it wasn’t long before she started to notice that certain foods, like gluten, appeared to trigger her flare ups. As she started to experiment with her diet, Nell consulted a private nutritionist who had been recommended by a friend.
Diet For Crohn’s Disease
If you have Crohns disease, you know exactly how difficult choosing your next meal can be. But it is possible to develop a healthy diet plan that provides the nutrients and calories you need, while also excluding trigger foods that inflame your symptoms.
Crohns disease, which is a type of irritable bowel disease that causes chronic inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, can make it difficult for your body to digest and absorb necessary nutrients from food. As a result, the food you eat can have great impact on how youll feel afterwards. Unpleasant symptoms that can result from Crohns include diarrhea, gas, bloating, abdominal pain, cramps, and even malnourishment. In some cases, it can also lead to anemia and reduce your levels of vitamin B12, folic acid, and iron.
Fortunately, there are ways you can avoid aggravating your symptoms and even promote healing in your GI tract.

Ehsani encourages those experiencing extended periods of diarrhea to supplement, as nutrient malabsorption can cause deficiencies. People with Crohns who are experiencing chronic diarrhea may be malnourished and could benefit from a multivitamin, she says. People with Crohns are also more likely to have anemia, so regularly checking your iron levels is important and supplementing when low is necessary.
Lee also mentions that it is important to supplement calcium if you are on steroids due to the impact they have on bone health. Steroids affect bone metabolism and increase the risk of bone loss leading to osteopenia and osteoporosis, she says. Vitamin D is needed to absorb calcium in the gut, so these are best taken together. High-calcium foods include low-fat dairy products, leafy greens, salmon, sardines, tofu and any products marked as fortified with calcium.

Many foods that are a problem when raw or whole can be eaten if prepared differently, says Cepo. We try to focus on what people can still have often that means cooking foods well, like string beans, cauliflower, or carrots and sweet potatoes.
Stringy foods like onions may be better tolerated if minced into very small pieces, just as seeds and nuts seem to cause fewer symptoms when theyre ground. Chickpeas and sesame seeds, for example, may cause problems, but hummus, which is made with ground chickpeas, and tahini, a sesame-seed paste, may not.
Water intake is always important, but critically so if you have frequent diarrhea.
Cepo cautions patients to limit beverages with caffeine, carbonation, or too much sugar all things that can make GI symptoms worse.
Water is a good choice, she says, as are diluted fruit juices without a high sugar content. For people who are very sick and at risk of becoming dehydrated, an over-the-counter rehydration fluid like Gatorade can replenish fluids and electrolytes.
What To Avoid In A Flare
Ehsani says that it is best to avoid any foods that will likely aggregate the stomach.
Caffeinated drinks, such as coffee, soda, teas, or even sparkling waters may be too hard to stomach, she says. Avoid citrus fruits like lemon, lime, grapefruit, oranges and tomatoes, as acidic foods might be too harsh for your stomach to tolerate. Avoid most dairy products some people can tolerate yogurt, but all other forms of dairy should be avoided as it’s harder for most people to tolerate.
Sugar alcohols are found in sugar-free foods, diabetic-friendly foods, and in many gums and candies, and its best to avoid them as they can cause diarrhea. Alcohol should be avoided until symptoms resolve as well.

I like to use avocado oil not only because its a healthy fat, but because it has a high smoke point of 500°F. Oils that have a lower smoke-point like olive oil turn rancid when cooked above a certain temperature, which has in turn been linked to cancer. Therefore, use olive oil for colder dishes like dressings. Canola oil has a smoke point of 400° and contains omega-3s but has been linked to inflammation if heavily consumed.
People with diabetes should be aware that even though honey is a natural sugar, it will still cause blood sugar levels to increase.
What Vitamins And Mineral Supplements Should I Take
Crohns raises your risk for nutritional deficiencies because your body doesnt digest food properly, meaning important nutrients may be expelled rather than put to good use. Flares, severe symptoms, surgeries, and other complications add to the difficulty of getting proper nutrition. Not helping matters, some medications you need to take can inhibit nutrient absorption, including prednisone, sulfasalazine, and methotrexate. Your doctor will do bloodwork and may prescribe supplements to help alleviate these deficiencies and prevent you from becoming malnourished.
Common deficiencies seen in Crohns patients are:
Anemiaa condition in which you lack the healthy red blood cells needed to carry oxygen to the bodys tissuesis a common issue when iron levels are low.
