Like I said, youll need to precook your hamburger first. This is the only real prep work required, it may take you a whopping 10 minutes once your skillet is hot.
I rarely ever have to drain any grease because the meat we have is very very lean. If you do have a decent amount in your pan I would drain in a strainer.
- As far as your potato tots go, keep them frozen right out of the freezer. This way they wont come apart when you mix everything together.
It is always best to add these without defrosting first. Whether you make them my themselves in the oven just to get crispy or you make this casserole with tater tots you dont want them to break apart and get mushy. To prevent that keep them hard and frozen. They will soften up nicely along with the other ingredients listed.
As for the vegetables you could use your favorites but those should be frozen too. I wouldnt choose soft varieties like broccoli but green beans and/or cauliflower florets would work too.

In a skillet over medium high heat brown the ground beef and onions, garlic and onion powder. Add salt and pepper too if you like. Break apart and cook until no longer pink. Drain any excess grease and allow browned beef to cool.

I have been making this Classic Homemade Tater Tot Casserole for about 3 years now but this is the first time it has made it to the blog.
Its nice for this time of year because its a comfort food dish perfect for cold weather.
Its also a convenient one-dish dinner and though it does require a large frying pan to cook the ingredients, the clean up from this dinner is relatively easy.
There is no condensed cream of mushroom canned soup in this recipe!

If Blake were to create a Top Ten list of favorite meals that I make, Im 100% positive this Tater Tot Hotdish would be included. And it would probably rank in one of the highest spots.
A number of years ago, I posted a photo of my homemade tater tot hotdish on Instagram and Facebook. And I was inundated with requests for my recipe.
Up until that point, I had never relied on a recipe for this favored dish of Minnesota culture. I had just used a few basic ingredients and thrown it all together, a little bit different each time.
But I promised those readers that Id get serious and write it down to share with them. Its been a hugely popular recipe ever since.
