“You can get some menthol notes on wheated whiskies that gives them a crispness, which is a high note in an Old Fashioned,” says Krueger. “The fresh-herb flavor is what I like about wheated bourbons.” With the wheat at 52% of the mash bill, this bottle delivers a floral, fruity punch.

What Is An Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is a simple bourbon or rye whisky-based cocktail that has been around for longer than you might think. The first incarnation of the Old Fashioned cocktail appeared way back in 1862, when Jerry Thomas published his infamous Bartenders Guide: How To Mix Drinks. The all-in-one guide offered instructions and recipes from the early days of cocktail mixing, but its most notable addition was that of an Old Fashioned Holland Gin Cocktail. While this iconic recipe bears the same hallmarks and namesake of the drink we now know and love, it substituted whisky for, you guessed it, Holland Gin. In fact, youd have to travel forward almost 20 years to find the first real mention of the contemporary classic.

In 1880, in Louisville Kentucky, a region most famous for its bourbon distilleries, a private social club was working on a new recipe. James E. Pepper of The Pendennis Club is credited is coming up with the first bourbon-based Old Fashioned recipe. According to The Courier-Journal, Pepper is said to have invented the drink in his hometown before taking it to the lofty heights of the Big Apple. The esteemed bartender reportedly introduced his Old Fashioned recipe to the famed Waldorf-Astoria Hotel bar, thus giving way to the New Yorks most iconic cocktail.

Common Old Fashioned Cocktail Mistakes

Even though the Old Fashioned recipe has been around for 150 years, that doesnt mean its foolproof. Bartenders and at-home mixologists have dabbled in reinventing the iconic drink to varying degrees of success. Some of the most common Old Fashioned mistakes have less to do with the method and mix itself, and more to do with the experience. For example,

  • An Old Fashioned glass is essential. As this is a cocktail that is mixed within the serving glass, having straight-sided walls makes a massive difference no fancy glassware needed.
  • Dont use soda water. Sure, if you want to mix things up, feel free to go nuts with the bubbly stuff, but this traditional recipe calls for the simple stuff.
  • Dont over-garnish. Everybody loves a grand presentation, but the Old Fashioned cocktail is exactly that old fashioned. This is a drink that screams refined elegance and sophistication, there is no need for fancy finishes. Let the cocktail speak for itself.
  • Whether youre a whisky connoisseur or cocktail novice, our Old Fashioned recipe is a sure-fire crowdpleaser. Simple, down to earth and full of flavour, its the perfect celebration to kick off International Whisky Day for 2020. Its not about skill, the Old Fashioned is about sophistication. As the great Don Draper would say, Make it simple but significant.

How To Make The Perfect Old Fashioned Cocktail

At the risk of sounding like a cliche, whisky isnt everyones cup of tea. High-proof and full of complex flavours, the iconic spirit is an acquired taste, but one that has become a symbol of manliness and sophistication the world over. In fact, whisky is so important to the drinking dialect, it even has its own day. Yep, Friday, March 27 is International Whisky Day, a celebration of all things mash and mal. To kick things off, the team at Man of Many are helping you up your culture game with a classic recipe, the Old Fashioned cocktail.

For many of us, our introduction to the Old Fashioned came by way of the great Don Draper himself. The cigarette smoking, advertising playboy made famous by Jon Hamm over seven seasons of Mad Men marked a decidedly dapper return to traditional tailoring, talking and intoxicants. Its true, Draper was a fan of drinking in general, but his poison of choice was always an Old Fashioned. Smooth, refined and manly, the cocktail is almost like a metaphor for the gentleman who drinks it. Weve all seen a fresh-faced teenager make the mistake of ordering one at a bar, only to be found out just as quick. But long before International Whisky Day kicked off and Draper had a chance to make his own, the Old Fashioned was signal of sophistication in high-class circles.

Old Fashioned Week is celebrated around the globe during the beginning of November. Despite Covid, this year was no exception. More home-based than previous years perhaps, but with just as much enthusiasm. Old Fashioned cocktail enthusiasts took the opportunity to celebrate this delicious cocktail in a variety of shapes.

I love watching the mixologists put their own twists on the theme. The creativity in cocktails that I have seen over the last couple of years shows how mature the industry is becoming. I spend some time to create a few variations on the theme to highlight specific elements of the Woodford Reserve Bourbon.

What Is The Best Bourbon To Use In An Old Fashioned

Since the Old Fashioned is essentially just alcohol, sugar, bitters and ice, the whisky matters. A lot. The entire depth of flavour will be greatly impacted by your choice of rye whisky or bourbon. To make your International Whisky Day decision a little easier, weve put together a short guide on choosing the best bourbon for your Old Fashioned. Here are the notes you should look for when selecting your boozy base. Your bourbon or rye whisky should

    • be sufficiently high proof
    • be dry enough to withstand both the sugar cube and ice dilution
    • not be overly sweet or spicy.

Its important to note that while the Old Fashioned is heavily dependent on the flavour of the bourbon of rye whisky, that doesnt mean you have to reach for the top shelf. It is, after all, a cocktail. A moderately-priced bourbon or rye whisky will do the job, and in many cases, the added biters and sugar will bring out complex notes in your favourite booze you hadnt previously picked up on.

How to Make a Woodford Reserve Old Fashioned

While you can use any bourbon for an Old Fashioned, it is best to look for one that is not too sweet, is dry enough to surpass the ice and sugar cube and is sufficiently high proof. Which Bourbon Brand Is Best In An Old Fashioned

We tried as many bourbons as we could get our hands on that would be widely available. The bourbon you use will probably have the greatest impact on the taste of the drink. Using a local or small batch bourbon would also be a nice twist on this classic drink if you are able to locate one.

We found the best cocktails were made using one of these three bourbons:

The biggest difference in cocktail cherries is the thickness of syrup. It was very interesting to learn that some cherries are dripping in syrup that resembles molasses and some are in a very light syrup that is closer to a light maple syrup.

Since this recipe is really taking that cocktail from decent to Id happily pay for that at a cocktail bar, this is one of those details thats easy to overlook but can be a game changer. Getting a nice jar of cherries significantly improves the drink.

Our favorite thick syrup cherry was the Maraska. Maraska, Luxardo, and Fabbri are all decent cherries and enjoyable, but wed go for Maraska if you can find them.

Our favorite light syrup cherry was the Woodford Reserve cherry. However, the Jack Rudy was almost equally enjoyable.

    Smoked Maple Old Fashioned Recipe

One of our most popular cocktail kits with Woodford Reserve Bourbon is a Canadian twist on a classic – the Old Fashioned cocktail. STEP 1

Set up provided wood chips on a heat proof surface , light wood chip on fire. As wood chip is burning, cover the flame with an upside down rocks glass, fire should subside and smoke the glass, leave for 5-10 seconds.

    STEP 2

Flip the rocks glass over once smoke filled. Add 2oz Woodford Reserve Bourbon

    STEP 3

Add 0.3oz of smoked maple syrup labelled ‘OF’ and 3-4 drops Angostura Bitters . Fill glass with ice and stir for 10-15 seconds until cold.

    STEP 4

Garnish with an orange zest or a dehydrated orange wheel.

Pro Tip: make sure to add enough ice when mixing! Fill the glass with ice to cover your liquid plus a bit more – this helps the temperature stay constant so your beverage stays cold and does not over-dilute over time.

Heres How To Prepare The Old Fashioned:

Start with a fresh, juicy orange. We like to use a vegetable peeler to get a nice, healthy piece of rind to rim the glass and flavor the cocktail. The first few times you make these, make sure to measure precisely to get the balance of flavors down.

Make sure you have plenty of ice in your shaker. All of you other ingredients should be ready to assemble, too. Shake, shake, shake and pour. Alternately, you can stir the borbon, bitters and simple syrup in a crystal cocktail mixer.

When everything is ice cold and incorporated, pour the contents over your ice sphere or cube. Add your cherries and enjoy this perfectly balanced classic old fashioned cocktail.

Aged three years and at a lower proof than most on this list, this venerable rye whiskey is just a nice, reasonable rye that gets the job done for a mellower Old Fashioned than most. Popular, affordable, and balanced between spice and grain flavors, its an imminently mixable classic thats a bartenders go-to for all sorts of cocktails. And with a price as gentle as its proof, this rye lets you mix up drinks for a group of friends and not break the bank.

“I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Old Overholt because it was my introduction to rye whiskey. It’s often my go-to for Old Fashioneds when I’m in an old school bar because I know they’ll most likely have a bottle behind the bar.” Prairie Rose, Editor

    Smoky Old Fashioned Cocktail

Add a drop or 2 of liquid smoke to the water used to make the ice before freezing.

This version as my favourite. The husband frowned at me when I started dropping liquid smoke in the ice trays, but the result was worth it. The slight smokiness from the ice slowly impacts on the Old Fashioned Cocktail and highlights the oak notes while adding a new dimension to the drink.

Recently the Woodford Reserve Rye whiskey reached South African shores and I need to try an Old Fashioned with this spicier whiskey as well.

    Ice For An Old Fashioned

    Bourbon Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe

Ice serves a basic purpose a way to make a cold drink. But it also has the ability to elevate a drink to bar-style quality. You have a few options with your ice, but we have a preferred one for an Old Fashioned. Heres what we tested:

    • Use your standard ice cube to make the drink/fill the glass
    • Use small square cubes
    • Use large square cubes
    • Our favorite: Use clear square cubes

A quick note on clear ice cubes. They melt slower and keep your drink cooler. Making clear ice cubes isnt as easy as it sounds. Some of it comes down to the purity of the water, but the real trick to making clear ice at home is slowly chilling the water.

We tested multiple makers to do this at home and by far our favorite was the True Cubes ice mold.
