Raw Food Recipe For Cats With Kidney Disease
Ingredients notes: You can find the organ meats at US Wellness Meats . It looks expensive at first, but 100 g of liver, kidney, etc is a super small amount so one purchase from US Wellness will probably last you for an entire year! Just add in easy-to-find ground beef and youre good to go!
Put the unused portion of the organ meats back in the freezer for later. I dont completely thaw them, I just thaw the organ meats enough that I can cut a chunk off.
The heart has to be chicken heart or you must supplement with taurine. The kidney can be any kind of kidney. Dont add more liver than recommended, due to vitamin A toxicity potential on a diet higher in liver. Remember, were trying to replicate what the cat would eat in the wild from their catches- a combination of majority muscle meat with a little organ meat as well.
Directions notes: Watch the first video to see how easy this cat food is to make!
Supplement notes:Fulvic and Humic is shown to have benefit when it comes to kidney repair in rats. For cats, a recommendation of 1/4 teaspoon per 20 pounds of weight can be used daily mixed into wet food or water.
Prepare The Chicken Meat
I use chicken legs instead of chicken breasts because the dark meat has more nutrition, plus my cat was losing too much weight on the breasts he needs more fat. I buy organic chicken legs from Trader Joe’s, which makes them pretty affordable. My method of cooking is to place the chicken legs in a steamer in a crock pot and cook on low heat. I’ve found that this tends to keep more of the nutrients in the food. The strainer lets the fat drip down too. Once the legs are cooked and cooled somewhat, I peel the skin and remove the meat and gristle from the bones. I don’t throw anything away. The meat gets put in a bowl. Some might be used today, the rest saved for another day. If I drop anything, my clean-up crew is right there taking care of it for me! Since I live so far from Trader Joe’s, I only make a trip about once a month. So I buy several packages at once. I may use one package fresh and freeze the rest. I freeze them by wrapping each one in plastic wrap and storing them in a freezer zipper bag.

The internet is awash with recommendations, forthright opinions, and recipes for cats with chronic kidney disease . This is concerning it’s one thing for people to give bad nutritional advice for a healthy adult animal, but it’s another thing when it’s for an animal with a medical condition. Poor nutritional management of cats with CKD will shorten remaining lifespan and increase secondary complications – that has been well-established in cats, dogs, humans and many other species.

I’m going to get stuck into the hardest and most controversial question first, which is:
Should a cat with kidney disease be fed a protein-restricted diet?
This question has previously been a topic of contention and debate, even amongst board-certified veterinary nutritionists. Fortunately, some recent research appears to be making this a slightly more straight-forward question to try and answer. And that answer is, yes, cats with chronic kidney disease very likely benefit from a degree of protein restriction. Here’s why.
Does it matter what proteins I feed?
Should a cat with kidney disease be fed a phosphorus-restricted diet? How much phosphorus restriction is necessary? What supplements should I use?

How Much To Feed
- Choose one day a week when you will weigh your cat. Write it down in your planner .
- Print a picture of your cat. Put it in your planner as a before picture.
- Buy a digital scale to weigh your cat and food.
- To weigh your cat: put a box on the digital scale and TARE out. Put your cat in the box. Write down the weight.
- Check a body condition score card to see where your cat is at. Write down the body condition score and whether your cat is underweight, ideal, or overweight.
- Weigh out the amount of food that your cat currently eats in a day. Write it down.
- Check your cats current food label to see if youre feeding the correct amount based on your cats weight. NOTE: Kittens should eat the recommended amount of food for their adult projected weight.
- The general guide for raw feeding is to feed 2-4% of your cats weight. For kittens, feed 2-4% of their adult projected weight. Start with 3% and adjust as necessary.
- If your cat is overweight, do not adjust the amount that you feed yet. It is better to upgrade your cats food first. Then slowly decrease the amount of food fed. More below.

What Types Of Foods
Low protein intake is often prescribed in kidney failure diets, because excess protein stresses the kidneys during the breakdown of wastes and other materials. However cats, who are natural carnivores, may reject many low-protein foods and as a result can become dehydrated and malnourished. Instead of dwelling on protein, carb and fat content, focus on feeding fresh meats, oils and anything else your cat will eat. During his body’s time of nutritional need, it’s better for him to eat something than nothing.
What Food Is Best For Dogs With Kidney Disease
Some of the best foods for dogs with kidney disease are brown rice and lean protein sources. Remember that dogs with the renal disease need less protein, phosphorus, and sodium than their healthy counterparts. As such, always opt for lean protein, and dont go overboard with it. Dont give your dog with renal disease pig ears, real bones, antlers, bully sticks, jerky treats, or rawhides. These are all high in protein and phosphorus.

How Much Do I Feed My Kitten
Kittens should eat the recommended amount for their adult projected weight. For example, the average ideal weight for adult cats is 10 pounds. Your kitten does not weigh 10 pounds currently, but he should eat the amount of food recommended for a 10-pound cat. Split up this amount between 5-6 meals. Around 6 months to 1 year, you can reduce to 3 meals daily. For raw, it is generally recommended to feed 2-4% of your kittens adult projected weight. Start at 3% and adjust as needed.
Best 3 Homemade Cat Food For Kidney Disease
Homemade cat food for kidney disease is a very good idea. You can save a lot of money and ensure that your cat is getting the nutrients they need. Some people have made homemade cat food for a couple of different reasons, whether for themselves or another animal. Here are some ideas if youve been thinking about making your own cat food at home. You can make your own cat food by following them.
Before we get into the details, lets talk about cat kidney disease. The kidneys are responsible for filtering toxins from the bloodstream and producing urine for elimination. As with humans, an animal may have one or both kidneys, but a healthy individual it will always have at least one functional kidney. When both kidneys stop working as well as they should, an animal may be said to have kidney failure.
Due to the kidneys essential role in filtering toxins, damaged kidneys cant eliminate them properly. In many cases, this causes a buildup of toxins that may damage other organs, including the liver and brain. Chronic kidney damage can lead to chronic renal failure, which is fatal if not treated.
The most common symptoms of kidney disease in cats include drinking more water than usual and urinating more frequently than normal. Other symptoms include vomiting, weight loss, lack of appetite, weakness, and lethargy.

Meat Types And Sources
As discussed above, I use chicken, turkey, and rabbit.
- The poultry is purchased from Whole Foods Market and is antibiotic-free but is not organic due to the cost. I use chicken or turkey thighs with bone and skin.
I also purchase chicken livers at WFM or another local grocery store.
- The rabbit is sourced from wholefoods4pets.com and I purchase the extra fine double ground product. This product, which includes the meat, bones and organs , arrives frozen in 3 lbs flat bags which are easy to store in the freezer.
This product does not have to be re-ground.
Note that each rabbit comes with its own liver so no extra liver needs to be purchased.
For people on the east coast, a rabbit supplier is www.hare-today.com 640-3582. I have no idea how finely this company grinds their food but it is not as fine as the product mentioned above. That said, I have never received any complaints from readers stating that their cats have had problems with any of Hare-Todays products.
Side note: Of course there are other issues involved with commercially-raised meat besides antibiotics such as the diet they are fed, how humanely they are raised, etc., but that is outside the scope of this webpage.
Raw fish should never be fed in large amounts because it contains thiaminase which will lead to a thiamine deficiency in the cat but I dont feed any fish to my cats for many reasons, some of which are:
- possible link to hyperthyroidism,
- hyperallergenic properties for some cats,
- phosphorus content
