Now that I have chocolate syrup in my fridge at all times, Iâm realizing that itâs a great condiment to have on hand. While I usually prefer to sweeten things with whole foods like dates and fruit, sometimes you just need some extra decadence. Other than using this homemade chocolate syrup to make chocolate milk, I also love to drizzle it on desserts , add it to my smoothies, drizzle it on on peanut butter toast or fruit like strawberries and bananas or blend it into my iced coffee to make a delicious iced mocha. You could even eat it with a spoon! Really, can you ever run out of uses for chocolate syrup?

Growing up all I knew was Hersheys syrup. Now, I love chocolate, but chocolate syrup is TOO SWEET! And even store bought hot fudge sauce is a step up, but still isnt great. But this hot fudge recipe is perfect because it is rich, and not overly sweet . However, if you prefer it a little sweeter, you can always add more sugar while your sauce is still hot.
The original recipe calls for 1/4 cup of sugar, but since most dessert are usually pretty sweet on their own, I dont think it needs any more sugar.
I also use dark chocolate chips. You can use semi-sweet or bittersweet if you prefer. The original recipe calls for good quality chocolate cut into small pieces. In my area, its difficult to come by anything more than Toll House, so that is what I use most of the time, and the sauce comes out perfect!

If youd like a creamier texture to your mug, you can always add more milk. Make sure you subtract the added milk quantity from the amount of water you add.
You wont want watered down cocoa!
Whole milk can also be substituted for the suggested two percent. This only amplifies the creamy texture, adding to the decadence of the beverage.
Powdered ingredients can clump together when being added to a liquid. Add the spices in slowly to keep this from happening.
You wont want too much chili powder in one bite!
Whichever way you heat the milk, youll run the risk of burning it. Nothing will ruin a cup of cocoa quicker than burned milk!
If heating on the stove, be sure to constantly stir the milk to keep from scalding it on the bottom.
If you are using a microwave, heat the cocoa in short bursts, stirring in between each one.

Theres really nothing to this recipe but you will need to source some unsweetened cocoa powder.
Next youll need some sugar, we just used regular white sugar but if you are Paleo or wanting to stay away from refined sugar then you can use coconut sugar as an alternative but just be aware that it will taste slightly different but still great.
When you are ready to make your hot chocolate you can simply microwave a mug full of your milk of choice if you are making one cup, or if you are making multiple cups its easier to heat the milk in a pan on the stove.
Then all you need to do is stir in the specific amount of hot chocolate mix required per cup, stir well, and taste and adjust the sugar if you need to and add your preferred toppings such as marshmallows, whipped cream, or chocolate chips.

Is Hersheys Syrup Real Chocolate
There are a few versions of Hersheyâs Chocolate Syrup, one of which only contains 5 simple ingredients and doesnât contain high fructose corn syrup. Iâve yet to come across their âSimply 5â chocolate syrup, but at least itâs a step in the right direction. However, the more common Hersheyâs syrup that youâll find contains high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, water, cocoa, and sugar. I wouldnât consider it real chocolate, but instead would call it a chocolate-flavored syrup. I gotta say, though, they definitely did well in the taste department!
