Help My Body Butter Is Greasy

The Easiest Shea Butter Lotion Recipe | ONLY 3-INGREDIENTS

Ive had a few comments/messages about this body butter recipe being a bit oily or greasy. Unfortunately a little greasiness is par for the course when using a body butter that is 100% oil based. Its good for our bodies, but can sometimes be a little too much.

If youre finding that your body butter is too greasy, try adding one tablespoon of arrowroot powder. Ive had multiple comments and messages about this working great, and have done research on other recipes and found that many people recommend adding around one tablespoon of arrowroot powder to similar recipes to cut the greasiness.

Ive never personally tried using arrowroot powder But this is definitely the easiest and most natural way Ive seen to cut the greasiness of this body butter recipe.

Lotion Without Coconut Oil Heres Why

Youll notice that this recipe doesnt use any coconut oil. A lot of lotion and homemade whipped body butter recipes rely heavily on coconut oil.

Coconut oil is not the cure-all. Gasp, I know. That statement is practically heresy in the natural living community. Toothpaste? Coconut oil. Smoothies? Yep, coconut oil. A boo-boo? More coconut oil. We use it for everything! Ive learned the magical oil isnt always suitable for every need.

Many years ago, I decided it was time to ditch the toxins found in our bathroom. From lotions to body wash to makeup, the amounts of toxins I put on my body was astounding. With the urge for simplicity and natural living, I started developing my own replacements for things like foundation powder and lotion.

One of my very first DIYs was a simple homemade moisturizer using coconut oil. After a few weeks of using this moisturizer on my face, I experienced multiple break outs, daily peeling, and dry skin patches. Heres why

Theres nothing wrong with coconut oil, but from a skin care perspective, its not the best moisturizer option for the face. If you use it on your face, its likely to clog pores and cause breakouts due to its chemical composition.

Shea butter does not clog pores and is the best moisturizer option. So skip the coconut oil on your face and instead turn to shea butter and a non-clogging carrier oil!

A Note About Body Butters Vs Lotions

Easy DIY Shea Butter Lotion Recipe

When people are first introduced to water-free skin care creams and butters, they are surprised at how little they need to use to moisturize their skin as opposed to an off-the-shelf lotion.

Lotions usually contain 70% 80% water and about 5% 10% of moisturizing butters and oils. Because lotions are mixing water and oil they usually require an emulsifier and a preservative to keep consistency and to prevent them from going rancid, most of the time man-made chemicals are used for this though there are some natural ingredients that can be used. In terms of consistency, lotions are lightweight and generally soak into the skin very quickly.

Body Butters, on the other hand, are a mixture of butters, oils and botanicals. They are concentrated moisturizers, loaded with nutrients and always denser in consistency. They can be whipped to make them light and fluffy. Body Butters are preferred by people who are looking to handle dry skin, repair damaged skin or simply maintain a healthy glow.

I havent personally used a preservative in this whipped body butter but Geogard ECT would be my choice. This preservative should be .6-1% of the formula.

Update: Several people noted a strong cocoa butter smell when they used this body butter recipe. Raw cocoa butter does have a strong smell and can be off-putting to some. You are welcome to use refined cocoa butter instead of raw cocoa butter. The same goes for coconut oil. Unrefined oils and butters are high in antioxidants and are great for your skin. However, they can often have a strong scent so if you prefer, use the refined options.

How To Use Your Homemade Body Butter

Before you scoop some of your body butter out of the jar, you want to make sure to wash your hands in order to avoid introducing bacteria to the jar.

Apply a generous amount of body butter to your skin, allowing a few moments for the warmth from your skin to make the butter more spreadable. I personally love to slather it on after bathing or showering, because my warm skin makes it easy to apply and it keeps my skin soft all day!

Use your body butter as often as desired for softer, more moisturized skin. I hope youll give it a try and let me know what you think, whether you use it yourself or make it to give as Christmas gifts!

Which Is Better Raw Or Refined Shea Butter

When something is refined it has gone through a process involving high heat and sometimes various chemicals. The result is an odorless, whiter form. This process does strip the shea butter of up to 75% of its nutrients and vitamins.

Raw shea butter is thicker, creamier colored and has a slight odor. To get the most out of shea butter as an ingredient in body butter recipes, raw, unrefined shea butter is the best option.

I confess: I totally used to be the girl with a hundred different drugstore body lotions in my bathroom. Ya know, the ones with water listed as the first ingredient followed by a whole bunch of chemicals and preservatives that really have no business being anywhere near your skin.m

But a few years ago I started learning about the importance of using safe, all-natural ingredients on our skin. I was already paying attention to the ingredients I was eating and feeding my family, but Id never really considered that our bodies absorb what we put on our skin much like they absorb what we put in our mouths.

And so, like everything else if our life I started overhauling our cosmetics and body care products one by one, chucking out the old store-bought stuff and replacing each item with a healthier homemade version.

This homemade whipped body butter was one of the first body care products I learned to make, and Im proud to say that I have never bought drugstore body lotion since.

Homemade Shea Butter Lotion With Essential Oils

Adding in essential oils is optional, but highly recommended! Essential oils can have so many great benefits for your skin and can help to customize your lotion just the way you want. Using essential oils will add cleaning, purifying, and anti-aging properties. Several can help to hydrate the skin and boost the immune system.

You will want to avoid citrus essential oils if you plan to use your lotion before being outside in direct sunlight. Some citrus essential oils are photosensitive and can cause the skin to sunburn or get a rash.

It is also important to note that the amount of essential oils you use will depend on who you are making it for. If making this lotion for an adult, you can add 10-15 drops of essential oil to the lotion. If making the lotion for a child, you can add 5-10 drops of essential oil to the lotion.

Water Content For Lotions

The main thing that differentiates a DIY lotion from other diy body creams is its high water content. This means a lotion should be relatively thin in consistency and will be absorbed by the skin very quickly. While lotion is good for pretty much any skin type, its especially good for normal or slightly dry skin.

Key Nutrients In Shea Butter Include:

Vitamin E As a fat-soluble nutrient, vitamin E comes in two forms: tocopherols and tocotrienols. Both classes of vitamin E play roles in defending the skin from free radical damage. In particular, vitamin E is known for its anti-aging and anti-inflammatory effects. When used topically, vitamin E penetrates the top layers of the skin and is absorbed into underlying tissues. By repairing these deeper layers, vitamin E is able to create longer-lasting change in the skin. Clinical studies have shown that vitamin E is useful for wound healing, reducing wrinkles, and guarding against irritating environmental pollutants.

Carotenoids This fancy word is used to describe the pigments found in many plants that are precursors to Vitamin A. When consumed or used topically on the skin, carotenoids protect the skin against the ravages of UVA radiation from the sun. Clear and consistent studies have shown that certain carotenoids act as a natural sunscreen while still allowing for the proper dose of vitamin D to get through. Carotenoids have also been cited for helping with skin moisture, elasticity, smoothness, fine wrinkles and blemishes. Learn more about carotenoids in this article.

How Long Does Diy Lotion Last

Typically, this lotion recipe will last up to 6 months. BUT it does need to be kept airtight and chilled. You cant leave it on the counter, or it will go bad in a matter of days or weeks.

Youll know when its gone bad because it will change colors and will most likely have a nasty odor. Toss it if you notice its gone bad because no one wants to rub that on their skin.

What Is Shea Butter

Shea butter comes from the nut of the fruit found on the Karite Tree. It is soft, compared to cocoa butter, and has a strong scent when its purchased in an unrefined state.

I use unrefined shea butter in body-care recipes, but if you dont care for the fragrance, I recommend using refined shea butter. Shea butter softens and moisturizes the skin, making it perfect for homemade lotion, shaving cream, and lip balm.
