If you are eating six times per day, a kit will not even last one month. The least you will spend is $300 a month, but likely more around $400 to $500. In my opinion as a dietitian, Optavia is not worth the cost. The highly processed, low calorie food is not a sustainable way to lose weight.

You can save money and develop healthy, sustainable habits by preparing your own meals from whole-foods ingredients or opting for a more sustainable diet program.

What Is The Optavia Diet

Optavia is marketed as a weight-loss or maintenance plan that prescribes eating a mix of purchased, processed food created by the company called “fuelings” and homemade “lean and green” meals. The program doesn’t call for you to count carbohydrates or calories. Instead, followers add water to powdered food products or unwrap a bar as part of a chosen meal plan, which can include up to six portion-controlled meals daily. There are reportedly more than 60 options to choose from, everything from shakes to biscuits, soups to puddings all contain added protein and a probiotic, according to the brand behind the diet.

More recently, Optavia has expanded offerings to include a selection of new programs designed for individuals with diagnosed diabetes, as well as considerations for people over the age of 65. The Lean & Green Noodles Anyone

Once I thawed out via a hot bath, it was time to think about what was for dinner. Because I didnt adequately prepare for my lean & grean meals prior to the sudden appearance of a winter wonderland, I was pretty limited on my choices for the one meal that I was to prepare daily.

Because beef stew was re-heating for the hubbie and kiddos, I knew that I needed to find something to eat and fast. If I didnt, I would be off-plan with a bowl of beef stew before I knew it.

I looked around in the pantry and found some miracle noodles that I had utilized months before when I had tried doing the keto diet. After quickly asking my coach and finding out that they were on plan, I decided that I would create some sort of chicken pasta!

If you arent familiar with Miracle Noodles, they are a type of shirataki noodle that are created from the Japanese konjac plant. They smell horrible when you open the package. It is almost like a fishy scent. I always wash them very thoroughly under running water and then put them on the stove in boiling water. This definitely removes the smell.

You can flavor the noodles with spices and it kind of takes on the taste of whatever you flavor it with. I utilized 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper with mine as I LOVE spicy foods. This equaled 2 of my 3 available condiments for the day.

One-half cup of these noodles equals 1 green, so I prepared 1.5 cups of these noodles to get ALL of my greens in.

Relies On Highly Processed Fuelings

The Optavia diet relies heavily on packaged food items. In fact, you would eat 150 Fuelings each month on the 5& 1 Plan.

This is a cause for concern, as many of these items are highly processed. Highly processed foods contain less fiber and fewer beneficial nutrients than a balanced diet with a variety of whole fruits and vegetables.

Specifically, these products contain large amounts of food additives, sugar substitutes, and processed vegetable oils, which may harm your gut health and contribute to chronic inflammation.

However, most research on the topic to date has been conducted on animals, and the effects arent always the same in humans. More research is needed to determine the effects on humans (

17 ).

Many Fuelings also contain maltodextrin, a thickening agent that has been shown to spike blood sugar levels and alter gut bacteria composition.

However, the amounts studied are much higher than those used in Fuelings, so Fuelings may not spike blood sugar levels any more than other carbohydrates. More research is needed .

While these additives are likely safe in small amounts, consuming them frequently on the Optavia diet may increase your risk of side effects.
