Toxins In Your Detergent

DIY Natural LAUNDRY DETERGENT Recipe – Liquid

I often wondered why my neighbors April Fresh aroma would give me migraines until a 2008 University of Washington study of top-selling laundry products found that the products emitted nearly 100differentvolatile organic compounds. Results of the study showed 58 different volatile organic compounds above a high concentration of 300 micrograms per cubic meter. Of these, seven are regulated as toxic or hazardous under federal laws.

All the products tested in the study gave off at least one chemical regulated as toxic or hazardous, but none of those chemicals was listed on the product labels.

Findings in a 2011 study show that air vented from machines using the top-selling scented liquid laundry detergent and scented dryer sheet contains more than 25 volatile organic compounds, including seven hazardous air pollutants. Of those, two chemicalsacetaldehyde and benzeneare classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as known carcinogens, for which the agency has established no safe exposure level.

No wonder laundry products make an estimated 10% of the population feel so ill.

The researchers estimate that in the Seattle area, where the study was conducted, acetaldehyde emissions from the top five laundry detergent brands would constitute about 6 percent of automobiles acetaldehyde emissions. In the U.S. we regulate automobile emissions, but completely ignore the toxic pollution coming from our laundry machine ventsat our own peril.

What Toxins Are In Store

DIY All

Did some of these blow you away? These are just some of the toxins found in common laundry detergents, but one thing to keep in mind is that there is no law requiring manufacturers to list the ingredients on their packaging.

In a study done by Washington State University, however, all 6 of the common laundry detergents that they studied gave off at least one chemical regulated as toxic or hazardous under federal laws, but none of those chemicals was listed on the product labels.

Steinemann goes on to say in her report that, five of the six products emitted one or more carcinogenic hazardous air pollutants, which are considered by the Environmental Protection Agency to have no safe exposure level.

As toxins become more well-known, they are often voluntarily removed from products. However, you can bet that as those toxins are removed, others are added.

All of this information was enough to have me completely convinced that homemade was the way to go so that I could know for sure what was in the soap I was cleaning my familys clothes, bedding, and laundry in!

Worsethe companies listed none of these chemicals on the label.

Among the products tested were a dryer sheet, a fabric softener, and a laundry detergent, as well as spray and plug-in air fresheners. Results showed nearly 100 volatile organic compounds emitted from the six products, and none were on the label. Five of the six products emitted one or more carcinogenic hazardous air pollutants, which are considered by the Environmental Protection Agency to have no safe exposure level, said study author Anne Steinemann.

Thats not all. A later 2011 study by the same researchers found that air vented from machines using top-selling scented liquid laundry detergent and scented dryer sheets contained hazardous chemicals, including two classified as carcinogens.

For the study, researchers ran a load of laundry once with no products, once with a leading brand of scented liquid laundry detergent, and once with both the detergent and a dryer sheet. They captured the exhaust from the dryer vent with a canister.

An analysis of the captured air showed more than 25 VOCs, including seven hazardous air pollutants. The two carcinogens were acetaldehyde and benzene.

Americans do a lot of laundry two to five loads a week on average. Using store-bought detergent costing about 50 cents per load, that adds up to $52 to $130 per year.

If youd rather save money and spend it some other way, try making your own detergent. Its a fun, easy project, and your laundry will cost only pennies per load.

Bonus: Homemade detergent smells like soap, not the artificial scents added to commercial detergents. That means its good for people who are allergic to or dislike fake scents.

High Efficiency Lavender And Lemon Laundry Soap

Using a food processor with a grating wheel and a fine processing blade is recommended to cut down your overall time. If using a food processor, cut the bar soap into smaller chunks that will easily fit down the chute.

  • 20 drops lemon essential oil
  • 20 drops lavender essential oil

Grate the bars of soap with the food processor. Remove soap and swap out the grating wheel for fine processing blades. Add 1/3 grated soap to the processor and a small scoop of OxoBrite.

The OxoBrite prevents the soap from sticking to the processor blades. Add more soap and powder until all grated soap is finely processed.

Dump soap and powder into a large stainless steel bowl, add remaining ingredients and stir to prevent components from layering. Store soap in glass jars. Use one to two tablespoons for each laundry load, depending on how dirty the clothes are.

But My Grandma Used Homemade Laundry Soap

Sure! And, it probably worked because cleaning isnt just about the soap.

In order to get a good clean you need three types of energy.

  • chemical energy soap or detergent
  • mechanical energy washing machine agitator or a wash board
  • thermal energy heat!
  • Most modern detergents have been formulated so you dont need heat, but your grandma was probably using hot water.

On top of that, she also used A LOT more mechanical energy. Washing machine agitators were much tougher on clothing to physically remove the soap from the textiles.

If youre hand washing your clothes or using an old machine with an intense agitator, live in an area with soft water, and are washing in hot water using homemade laundry soap might work for you.

But, if youre doing this to save money or the planet you arent going to achieve your goals.

An older model of washing machine with a decent agitator uses about 45 gallons of water per load and the energy cost on running it and heating all that water will eliminate any savings and use far more resources than a cardboard box.

Homemade Natural Laundry Detergent Vs Store Bought Laundry Detergent

Store bought laundry detergent contains sulfates, chemicals, and filler ingredients that can be damaging to your skin and clothes. Homemade detergents only carry a few washing ingredients such as soap, Borax, washing soda, and baking soda. These ingredients can be found in any supermarket and dont contain any extra ingredients that can cause skin irritation.

There are several chlorine-free bleach alternatives that are great for brightening, whitening, and deodorizing. Here are my top picks:

    • Eco-Me Laundry Whitener and Brightener Safe for colors and whites. Add one capful along with your laundry detergent to loads as needed.
    • Mollys Suds Oxygen Whitener Safe for colors and whites. Add one scoop along with your laundry detergent to loads as needed.
    • Pure Sodium Percarbonate Safe for whites and colors when you add a couple of tablespoons to your regular wash cycle. May fade some colors if soaked for hours. The brand I link to says it contains 99% pure sodium percarbonate, but its totally pure. The other 1% is moisture.

    To Make Homemade Laundry Detergent

    • Grate the soap with a cheese grater.
    • Add the grated soap, washing soda and essential oil to your food processor.
    • Blend until you have a fine powder. You may want to lay a dish towel over the top of your food processor to prevent a fine mist of powder from floating into the air. Also, let it settle a bit before opening the container or the powder will float onto your kitchen counter.
    • Pour into a clean, airtight container.
