Can My Dog Eat Faq

So many readers are asking if these vegetables for dogs safe? So let’s go through some of the most asked questions.

Can dogs eat bell peppers?

Yes. Bell peppers are loaded with essential vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants beneficial to a dogâs health. Rich in vitamins A, E, B6, and lutein and are great sources of vitamin C and beta-carotene. Red bell peppers actually start out green and mature to red. They pack the most nutrition because they’ve been on the vine longest.

Can dogs eat potatoes?

Yes. Cooked potatoes in moderation are fine. Boil, steamed, or baked without seasoning are fine. They contain a number of nutrients including vitamins A, B6, and C, as well as minerals like magnesium, iron, calcium, and potassium. Raw potatoes should never be fed to your dog. Like other vegetables belonging to the nightshade family , raw potatoes contain solanine, a compound that can be toxic to dogs.

Can dogs eat broccoli?

Yes. Broccoli is best served as an occasional treat. It is high in fiber and vitamin C and low in fat. However, Broccoli florets contain isothiocyanates, which can cause mild-to-potentially severe gastric irritation in some dogs. Furthermore, broccoli stalks have been known to cause obstruction in the esophagus. Chop up the broccoli for your pet.

Sassy girl, is happy. Okay, she didn’t like the spinach and pulled it out! But loves the rice and beef.

The trick I learned was to chop it finer than seen here and she gobbled it all…

This homemade dog food will last 5-7 days in the refrigerator and up to 3 months in the freezer. We usually make a weeks worth of food at a time and store it in the refrigerator. We store all of the meals in simple Tupperware containers and we ALWAYS save our plastic take-out containers and re-use them for Rascals Dog Food.

When eating time rolls around, simply nuke it in the microwave for 30-60 seconds and cool slightly before serving.

For freezing, I recommend freezer-safe containers or freezer zip-top bags. Thaw overnight in the fridge before feeding and reheat as directed.

This will definitely vary from dog to dog and I highly recommend speaking to your vet before going homemade. Generally speaking, for every 10 lbs your dog weighs is roughly 1/2 cup of prepared food.

Rascal weighs 75 lbs and we feed him about 3-3.5 cups of food per meal .

Is it cheaper to feed your dog homemade food?

Homemade dog food is more affordable than you might think. Its very relative to how large your dog is, but Ill break down the numbers for you The last dry kibble dog food Rascal was prescribed was over $90 a bag. A homemade batch costs us roughly

    • 3 lbs ground turkey $10.49
    • 2 lbs sweet potatoes $5.19

And Then I Got A Dog And Suddenly It Seemed Like A Brilliant One

Not only does my Banjo LOVE this dog food, it is healthy and loaded with great nutrients! The best part is how bow-wow simple it is to make

IMPORTANT!: I am NOT a veterinarian or canine nutritionist. That said, while you can alter the veggies added , here are some things you should NEVER feed dogs: onions, garlic, mushrooms, raisins, grapes and chocolate. This recipe is also meant as a supplement to kibble or as a snack/treat. Also, every dog reacts to food differently due to various reasons. If your dogs poop color changes after feeding, it may be because of the dietary change and the colors in the food such as carrots. In general, it is usually suggested to slowly incorporate new foods with current foods for a smoother transition. You know your dog best, so as with any dietary change, be sure to monitor their behavior. Feed them at your own discretion with common sense employed and always take them to a licensed veterinarian should there be a shift in behavior in terms of what they eat.

How To Make Homemade Chicken And Sweet Potato Dog Food

Just 5 ingredients are used to make this homemade dog food:

    • Chicken – skinless chicken breasts are poached and shredded
    • Sweet potato – We boil the sweet potatoes because they have a lower glycemic index than roasted sweet potatoes. This means that your dog’s blood sugar levels won’t spike. We serve the sweet potato mashed but you could serve it as chopped.
    • Brown rice – A source of fiber. If you want a grain free meal for your dog, omit the rice and replace it with kale or zucchini.
    • Apples – Peeled and served raw. Always remove the seeds and core.
    • Turmeric – This is added to the brown rice when cooking. Turmeric is great for dogs for it’s anti-inflammatory properties.

    Finely Chopped Dog Food

    Homemade Dog Food

If your dog is picky or will only eat finely chopped dog food , you can either run the vegetables through a food processor or finely chop them on a cutting board. Hand held boxed graters work but take a lot of time. I use the shredder blade on my processor and buzz everything through. Also, try frozen riced vegetables, they are a great option and work great!

Recipe Variations: What Natural Foods Can I Feed My Dog

Home-cooked dog food diets can be one of the best ways to keep your best friend happy and healthy. As always, check with your vet before testing a new dog diet, but here are some of my best recommendations:

    • Protein: Rascal digests ground turkey really well but you can try ground beef, pork, chicken, lamb, and Rascals personal favorite: venison. If you dont have a meat grinder, you can ask your butcher to grind it for you or cut it up super fine before cooking.
    • Vegetables: Spinach, butternut squash, cranberries, cauliflower, apples, green beans. Here is an entire list of AKC approved fruits and vegetables you can give your dog.
    • Grains & Carbs: Rice, quinoa, barley, whole grain pasta, and potatoes can be great options. If you can believe it, Rascal is actually allergic to rice. I wish I were kidding.

One tip I can share is you can use riced frozen vegetables. I have used packages of riced cauliflower, sweet potato, and broccoli. These will work great for dogs that can’t chew well, are picky, don’t each much food, or won’t eat larger pieces of dog food.
