To make these Swedish meatballs in sauce, I sauteed onions before adding the to the meatballs and let me tell you the sweetness of the caramelized onions is mouthwatering!

Aidells Chicken Meatballs In Tomato Sauce Over Penne Pasta

This is one of our favorite meals. Limited prep work. Very filling. And those meatballs mmmm. Ive found the Aidells caramelized onions chicken meatballs at Whole Foods or Safeway, amongst the cooked sausages.

This recipe for the sauce will be enough for 4 to 5 servings of pasta.

Ingredients

4 to 5 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 package of baby bella mushrooms, sliced 1 package aidells caramelized onions chicken meatballs, 1 can diced tomatoes, drained 1 can cannellini beans, save 1/4 cup juice, drain the rest, rinse 1 jar pasta sauce, 1/2 package of spinach

penne pasta, cook to al dente and set aside,

Steps

1. Prep onion, garlic, mushrooms, meatballs as indicated above.

2. Heat 1 TBS olive oil in a large pot, sauté 3/4 of the onion on medium heat until translucent. Then add 3/4 of garlic and sauté for 1 2 minutes before adding the mushrooms.

3. Sauté mushrooms together with onion and garlic for 3 to 4 minutes, then stir in the meatballs. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, then add the diced tomatoes. Season with salt & pepper.

4. After cooking the tomatoes for 3 to 5 minutes, add the cannellini beans. Cook on medium heat, uncovered, for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally. Then add pasta sauce. Stir and reduce heat to medium low, keep lid slightly ajar and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir occasionally.

6. Prêt à manger. Serve with freshly cracked black pepper.

How To Cook Caramelized Onion Meatballs

Cabbage Soup and Caramelized Onions – Chicken meatballs

First, preheat your oven or air fryer to 400 degrees. In a medium skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium heat. Cook, occasionally stirring, until the onions are caramelized, and the volume has reduced to about ½ cup.

Next, allow the onions to cool slightly and then mix with the ground beef, almond flour, egg, rosemary, sage, thyme, salt, black pepper, and remaining oil. Use a medium scoop to form into balls about 1 ½ to 2 tablespoons in size.

You know I love a good meatball, and caramelized onionswhich is why I combined the two into one tasty dish to get Caramelized Onion Chicken Meatballs. The meatballs have all of the same simple ingredients as my All Purpose Chicken Meatballs but with sweet caramelized onions mixed in. I included a simple gravy to go with these meatballs, it really makes the meal! Its filled with Thanksgiving flavors and more caramelized onions. YUM!

To Make Sauce For Ikea Meatballs In Sauce:

Reduce heat to low and add 4 tablespoons butter to hot pan. Once butter is melted, whisk in 3 tablespoons flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.

Add in 2 cups beef broth and simmer for 2 minutes. Next, add in 1 cup heavy cream.

Add 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce and 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard. Simmer until sauce thickens just a bit. Taste it and add salt and pepper if necessary .

Add your kottbullar into sauce, cover and simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes.

Can You Make These Caramelized Onion Meatballs In Sauce Ahead And Freeze Them

To make these Swedish meatballs ahead, you will need to prepare them for the freezer. First of all, make sure to use a baking sheet. Next, make sure there is enough space in your freezer to accommodate it I usually fit it on top of other items in the freezer so it ends up being closer to the ceiling of the freezer.

Finally, you want to freeze the Swedish meatballs individually so they dont stick together. After 30 minutes, you can transfer them to a freezer-safe container. Now these köttbullar are ready for you any time you need them.

I just cant get enough of these Swedish meatballs! I know I mentioned the magic of sauteed onions. But I cant skip garlic here I added 3 cloves of minced garlic, even though I couldve gone as far as adding 5, cooked them only for a minute and it just boosted the flavor even more.

Garlic burns easily so you need to watch carefully, but Ive found smell to be the best indicator that its doneas soon as you smell that strong garlic scent its ready. I usually let it cook for a few seconds longer until its slightly brown. Cant wait to make pasta with these Ikea Meatballs in Sauce or even better, mashed potatoes!

My absolute favorite way to serve these Caramelized Onion Meatballs is with Mashed Cauliflower. Other options include:

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Place the formed meatballs on the parchment lined baking sheet.
  • Bake for about 15 minutes, or until almost or just barely cooked through . Drain any extra liquid from the pan and wipe the edges of the meatballs if needed.
  • Turn the oven to broil and move the oven rack right under the broiler. Place the meatballs under the broiler for about 2 minutes, until browned.

How To Make The Sauce

  • So the pan now has been used to cook the onions and brown the meatballs which mean there are some browned bits that will go a long way to flavor the sauce. It starts with butter and flour that cook together just until the flour loses its raw flavor. I like to add about a quarter cup of the chicken stock at this point and, as it simmers, I use the whisk to scrape up all the flavor off the bottom of the pan. From there add the rest of the stock and bring it to a boil until it starts to thicken.
  • Add the onions to the sauce and reduce the heat enough to maintain a strong simmer. The sauce will continue to thicken and, after about five minutes or so, you can add the meatballs back in. Cook all of it together for another five to ten minutes until the sauce is thick and glossy and the meatballs are cooked through.

Depending on what you like theres a few ways to serve these French onion chicken meatballs. You can keep them in the skillet, top them with cheese, and pop the skillet under the broiler for a few minutes and serve them with some rice or pasta or just as they are with hunks of crusty bread on the side for dunking in the sauce. Or, like in the photo below, pile the meatballs into top-sliced rolls, top with cheese, and serve them up sandwich-style.
