While the above liquids are more popular, I like to get creative with my liquid bases. Here are a few more super fun + delicious options:

Kombucha– I’m not kidding! This is a great probiotic option, and the sky’s the limit on flavors.

Fresh squeezed juice– While 100% juice has natural sugar, it is still a higher sugar option. So remember that when adding it to your smoothie.

Coffee– This base works great in smoothies including cocoa or cacao, nut butter, vanilla, you name it. Need a caffeine free option? Just use strongly brewed decaf coffee to enjoy the flavor without the buzz.

As you can see, dairy milk is far from the only liquid base for smoothies. Don’t be afraid to get creative mix + match any of these bases until you find your fav.

Why Do We Use Frozen Fruit In This Berry Smoothie

There’s a few reasons to use frozen fruit in berry smoothies and the first is that it helps keep the smoothie cold without having to add tons of ice which will eventually water down the smoothie.

Another reason is to give the smoothie a creamy texture without needing to add yogurt. Frozen berries blend up really nicely and give the recipe the creaminess you want in a smoothie without the need for a lot of other additives.

Finally, I like to use frozen berries because they are easy to keep on hand. Fresh berries don’t last very long and they can be expensive. It’s cheaper and easier to use frozen berries which can be kept on hand all the time and are readily available at the grocery store year round.

Culinary Tips For The Best Dairy

If you want to make smoothies for breakfast and arein a time crunch, place all of the non-frozen ingredients in your blenders jar and place it in the fridge the night before. Add the frozen ingredients in the morning and blend!

If your smoothie is too thick after blending, add more liquid. If it is too thin, add more fruit or ice. Note that adding more optional ingredients will thicken the smoothie.

While we like the added nutrition boost that leafy greens add, they do change the color of the smoothie, so use caution if serving to picky eaters!

Did you know that many store-bought smoothies are very high in sugar and calories? I used to grab one for a healthy boost all the time when I was in my twenties not knowing that they were doing the opposite. Most store-bought smoothies use juice, way too much fruit and flavored yogurt. These ingredients can add up to your daily recommended sugar intake in just one drink! But the truth is that its much healthier and cheaper to make your smoothies at home.

Theres actually a simple trick that you can use to make healthier smoothies: Use less fruit, no fruit juices, and no flavored yogurt. Fruit juice are high in sugar and totally unnecessary for a smoothie. The same goes for yogurt if youre going to use it, which I do in the raspberry yogurt recipe below, then you only want to use plain yogurt with no added sugar or flavorings.

It depends on your tastes really. I like to experiment quite a bit. Ive been known to add granola, oats, flax seed, chia seed, protein powder, and a variety of other things.

I have tried other greens besides spinach, but some are bitter. Spinach is smooth and not very noticeable in flavor, which means it doesnt take away from your fruit combinations.

Some of my favorite combinations include :

  • cherries and spinach
  • pineapple, mango, some fresh orange juice and a little coconut extract
  • strawberry, banana, and vanilla extract
  • blueberries, chia seeds, spinach, almond extract

This dairy free smoothie is a refreshing and delicious choice to have for breakfast. Ripe and sweet mangoes and peaches, kale, fresh mint, and the other nutritional add-ons make a super healthy invigorating combo.

I added hemp oil for 2 reasons:

  • 1) Its an amazing source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that provides complete and highly digestible protein.

Secrets To The Best Healthy Smoothies

  • ADD A CREAMY INGREDIENT My favorite thing to add to a smoothie is 1/2 of an avocado. It adds the perfect creamy consistency that I cant get enough of. I just love it.
  • FREEZE YOUR BANANAS This trick will take your smoothie from a 7 to a 10. Chop a banana into three pieces and freeze them on a baking sheet for 2 hours. After that, place it in a freezer bag. Then use these frozen pieces to add to your smoothies. This will make your smoothie extra cold and creamy. Its totally delicious.
  • TRY ZUCCHINI OR CAULIFLOWER No really! Both have no added taste in your smoothie but will provide added nutrition. In fact, I used both in my smoothie this morning and couldnt taste either one. Theres no need to cook them as both can be added to the blender raw. Start with 1/2 of a zucchini , or one cup of cauliflower florets.
  • ALWAYS ADD PROTEIN Protein will give you that long-lasting energy. You can use protein powder, hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds or seed butter all are great protein sources.

    Very Berry Smoothie

    This banana blueberry smoothie is adapted from my Wild Blue Smoothie recipe in Go Dairy Free: The Ultimate Guide and Cookbook. I originally shared this popular recipe back in 2006, and it has become a family favorite. Here are a few quick notes and tips about this recipe:

    Go Green Dont worry, you wont taste or see the spinach! Spinach is a great beginner green for smoothies. It provides extra vitamins and minerals, but its the most tender and mildly-flavored green. You wont detect it beneath the bold fruit flavors and the purple hue of the dark berries masks the green color.

    Start Slow The reason I add half the milk beverage first is to ensure the spinach fully blends in. If you add too much liquid, the leaves tend to just spin around even with some high power blenders! But a thicker base allows even wimpy blenders to pulverize those greens.

    Choose Your Consistency As is, this is a drinkable smoothie. I give the option to add ice for a thicker blend, like the one pictured. If you want a really thick shake, you can use a frozen banana. But you might need to add a little more liquid.

    Sweeten Only as Needed The sweetness of this banana blueberry smoothie will depend on the sweetness of your fruit. Usually, Im able to omit the sweetener or add just a small pinch of pure stevia extract. I just recommend that you add the sweetener last to avoid adding more than you need. Sometimes its surprisingly sweet as is!
