Are There Any Side Effects

Weelicious: Reduced Sugar Banana Bread with Truvia® Brown Sugar Blend
  • Some of the ingredients in Truvia have been looked into, but the sweetener itself has not.
  • There were no harmful side effects in a human study that lasted four weeks and used a high dose of rebaudioside A. This study, though, was paid for by Cargill, the company that makes Truvia.
  • A recent study found that the common fruit fly could die from eating erythritol. The authors even suggested erythritol as a pesticide safe for the environment.
  • Even though these results are worrying, it looks like people and other mammals can handle erythritol.
  • Still, sugar alcohols like erythritol may make it hard to digest food.
  • It looks like your body handles erythritol better than the other sugar alcohols because it doesnt get into your large intestine in large amounts.
  • In one study, digestive problems only happened when 50 grams of erythritol, a vast amount, were taken all at once.
  • In another test, it took at least four times as much erythritol as the sugar alcohol sorbitol, which is often used, to cause diarrhea.
  • Keep in mind that everyone has a different level of tolerance. Be very careful with Truvia if you have trouble with sugar alcohols.
  • Still, most people shouldnt have digestive problems if they use Truvia every day, at least not if they dont use too much.

Healthify Your Banana Bread With Truvia Baking Blend

How would you like a big slice of banana bread with less than half the calories of a typical slice? We thought youd say yes.

Truvia is launching a new Truvia Baking Blend and they want you to know all about it. Truvia is an all-natural sweetener that has zero calories and is made with the best tasting part of the stevia leaf.

Truvia Baking Blend is a blend of Truvia natural sweetener and sugar, and it provides a 75% calorie reduction per serving compared to recipes sweetened only with sugar. One half cup of the Baking Blend offers the same amount of sweetness as one cup of sugar, which has 760 calories. Truvia suggests using half as much Baking Blend when substituting it for sugar in your recipes, to ensure it doesnt come out too sweet.

Besides the impressive calorie statistics, we also love the package design. It features a twist-off, re-closable, easy-to-pour spout, which is a first in the sweetener baking blend market.

We received a free sample of Baking Blend to try, and put it to the test in a healthier version of one of our favorite baked goods: banana bread. This recipe calls for 1/3 cup of Truvia Baking Blend, so its considerably low in calories from sugar. And with only 4 Tablespoons of butter when some recipes call for a whole stick, you can eat a whole slice without feeling near the guilt.

Tips For The Best Low Carb Banana Bread

Follow these tips for perfect banana keto bread, each and every time.

  • Use fresh baking powder. Keto banana bread doesnt rise very well, so fresh baking powder is especially important to help it rise as much as possible.
  • Use xanthan gum. Add 1/2 teaspoon into the dry ingredients and your banana bread made with almond flour will have a better texture. Plus, it will be less crumbly.
  • Use room temperature ingredients. This will ensure a smooth batter that doesnt clump.
  • Round the top. Since it doesnt rise much, shaping the batter by rounding the top is going to help your low carb banana bread recipe look more traditional.
  • Consider coverting it part way through baking. Keep an eye on your bread as it bakes. If the top of the bread starts to brown but the inside is still moist, you can tent the top with foil and then continue the cooking time.
  • Let it cool completely. I know its hard, but its important to be patient and let the gluten free sugar free banana bread cool completely on a wire rack before slicing, or it will fall apart.

Simply prepare a muffin pan with nonstick spray or line it with paper cups. Prepare the batter as per recipe – remember, the most important thing is to use a ripe banana – and fill into the prepared baking dish.

Is Homemade Banana Bread Good For You

It really will depend on how you make it. Growing up, my mom made a recipe for me that called for 5 tablespoons of butter and 1/2 cup of pure honey. Those are loaded with fat and sugar.

Most recipes I see have 300+ calories and 50+ grams of carbs per slice. If you want to eat a slice of bread for breakfast or as a treat a few days a week, those macros are not very friendly.

I came up with this recipe to round out the macros and nutrition facts profile a bit.

Here Are Some Tips For Making Sugar Free Banana Bread

Weelicious: Reduced Sugar Banana Bread with Truvia® Brown Sugar Blend

It is important that you check your banana bread frequently while it is baking. This is because pulling the banana bread out of the oven too soon can cause the center to be soft or gooey as the bananas need to fully bake.

Here are some more helpful tips for you.

  • Make this recipe gluten free. Use a gluten free all purpose flour such as one of these instead of regular all purpose flour.
  • Make sure that you are using a very ripe banana for this recipe. Using a banana that is soft, will make it easier the blend the ingredients more successfully.
  • While bananas do have carbohydrates in them, low carb diet people can use a low carb all purpose flour to keep the carbs down in their bread.
  • If you are using a baking mix such as Carbquik, please omit the baking powder and baking soda from the ingredient list below.
  • Adding chopped walnuts adds both flavor and texture to this banana bread recipe.

What Makes This Banana Bread Healthy

    • This banana bread recipe is made with 100 percent whole wheat flour, unlike traditional banana bread recipes that call for refined flour and lots of processed sugar.
    • This banana bread is naturally sweetened with honey or maple syrup, which offer some trace nutrients that white sugar does not.
    • Lastly, this recipe calls for a reasonable amount of unrefined oil rather than whole sticks of butter .

As you can see, my homemade banana bread has plenty of redeeming qualities, chief being that it wont send your blood sugar levels for a loop. You can keep them all to yourself, though. No one will be able to tell that this is healthy banana bread!

    How To Substitute Butter

I like the flavor of butter in my bread, but I cut the standard amount of butter typically used in half but using unsweetened applesauce.

I dont recommend substituting all the butter outlined in this recipe for more applesauce. You will need some oil. You can substitute the 2 1/2 tablespoons of butter for coconut oil or avocado oil instead.

Why Baking Soda Instead Of Baking Powder

When baking soda is combined with something acidic, it reacts, which aerates and raises baked goods much like yeast. I learned this when making my Air Fryer Chocolate Chip Cookies. In that recipe, combining lemon juice with baking soda, resulted in soft cookies with a puff.

Usually when baking soda is used in a recipe, its also used with something acidic like buttermilk, lemon juice, or applesauce .

Recipes like muffins, biscuits, and quick breads need a leavening agent like baking soda to give them the right texture.

Baking powder is often used when there arent acidic ingredients in the recipe.

To substitute baking soda for baking powder you will need 4 teaspoons of baking powder. 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda = 1 teaspoon of baking powder. You can read more about Baking Soda vs Baking Powder here.

    Low Carb Banana Bread

    Banana Bread

Don’t have chopped walnuts? You can use any nuts in this recipe. I think pecans or hazelnuts would work particularly well.

Instead of nuts, you could addsugar free chocolate chips instead. It’s easy to make your own. Alternatively, use chopped dark chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 85 % or a brand like Lily’s.

I used a small 7.5 x 3 inch loaf tin for this recipe. It’s the perfect size for low carb bread because it’s nutrient dense and filling and servings need to be smaller. If you use a loaf pan like this, your bread will be taller than wide.

If you only have a full size bread pan, you can double the recipe. In this case, increase the baking time to about 1 hour. Be sure to insert a knife to test the inside is baked . Again, cover the top loosely with aluminium foil once the top is browned to prevent burning.

To make this recipe dairy-free, replace the butter with coconut oil.

For even more flavor, consider adding a pinch of salt or 1 tsp vanilla extract.

I used ground almonds in this recipe. This is equivalent to regular blanched almond flour in the US. Almond meal would also work well and give a more rustic texture.

If you’re using super fine almond flour, I recommend to reduce the amount to 1 ¼ cup as it is more absorbent.

I have not tried this myself, but it should be possible to replace the almond flour with ½ cup of coconut flour. In this case, you may also want to add ¼ tsp of xanthan gum.

Is Truvia Or Stevia Better For People With Diabetes

Even though there isnt much research on whether Truvia or Stevia is better for people with diabetes to use as a replacement sweetener, several websites hosted and written by people with diabetes seem to prefer Stevia over Truvia. Diabetes Strong says Stevia is their favorite sweetener because it wont increase their blood sugar.

Vitagene says in his book that Stevia doesnt cause glycemic responses, and it has been shown to lower blood sugar levels, and it also makes insulin less effective. Similar reports and reviews from people with diabetes who use Truvia are less common, which may mean that Stevia is a slightly better choice. Both are nonnutritive sweeteners, and according to Everyday Health, nonnutritive sweeteners have little to no effect on blood sugar.

If you have diabetes and are trying to decide, you could try both options to see if you like one better than the other. The taste can also be a little different, and you can see if you have any reactions to either before buying many of them.
