  • When You Should Eat A Soft Food Diet

For example, if you have gotten a dental implant placed or any type of oral surgery , your dentist may recommend a soft food diet. Thats a smart option because, first of all, youll have pain and discomfort in your mouth after the procedure. Secondly, it allows the surgical sites to heal better and quicker.

What Are The Benefits Of Eating Soft Foods

Eating soft foods right after surgery can speed up the healing process by building and repairing muscle, skin, and tissue, as well as fighting off infections.

After wisdom teeth removal surgery, root canals or tooth extractions, it is critical to aid your body with nutritious foods that are low in sugar.

Soft Foods To Eat Several Days After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Depending on the number of wisdom teeth you have removed and the process, you may be able to start eating soft foods within a day or two. Gelatins and puddings are easy-to-eat and yummy choices. Greek yogurt is a good source of calcium and protein. Mashed or pureed fruits and vegetables add nutrients and fiber to your diet. Ice cream is a nice treat and the cold can be soothing to your painful mouth.

Its best to avoid spicy and acidic foods, seeds, grains, nuts, chips or foods that are crunchy. Small pieces of food could irritate the surgery site or get into the wound area, causing the wound to re-open or start an infection.

Ice Cream And Other Cold Foods

Ice cream as an official dietary recommendation by medical professionals? Yes, please.

Dentist Lilya Horowitz, owner of Domino Dental, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, suggests ice cream or cold smoothies as part of the recovery process.

Stick with cold foods that are dissolved into liquid so that the food doesnt get stuck in extraction sockets, says Dr. Horowitz. Not only is ice cream a safe food, but, of course, itll be a nice treat as youre recovering from surgery.

Dr. Sclafani agrees that ice cream and other cold foods are a great bet. Cold foods such as ice cream, Jell-O, smoothies, sorbet, milkshakes, and protein shakes may relieve some of the discomfort.

He cautions, however, against drinking them through a straw post-surgery as it can loosen blood clots or scrape the wound.

How Long Does The Healing Process Take For Teeth Extractions

Ive had several teeth pulled in my lifetime and I can easily say that getting 3 wisdom teeth pulled at one time has been the roughest by far. I got my first wisdom tooth pulled several years ago because it was growing in weird and causing pain and the healing time for that one was between 1 and 2 weeks closer to two.

My most recent experience of getting the other three pulled has proven to be very painful as well although most of the pain seems to be coming from the lower extraction site. Was definitely able to chew just shy of 2 weeks.

A number of factors come into play when figuring out how long your healing process may take. This includes the angle your wisdom teeth have come in, how theyve erupted, whether theyre infected or not, the difficulty of the removal process itself and twisted roots will be more complicated and can result in longer healing time. If your oral surgeon needs to break the tooth up into pieces prior to removal that could increase healing time.

Generally, Ive found that the first 3-4 days are the worst and it gets better from there. If you cant keep up with pain management with what your doctor has suggested or if you feel like the pain is getting worse over time, be sure to contact your surgeon or dentist right away!

Being cautious during the first few days after wisdom teeth extraction can promote faster healing and have you eating your favorite crunchy foods again soon!

    Until then stay smooth. 🙂

My Most Important Survival Tip Before Tooth Surgery

What Happens When Wisdom Teeth Are Not Removed

If you are about to have your teeth pulled, here is a very important tip: Stuff yourself to the top! Until you can’t anymore.

I ordered a large pizza, a big salad to go with it, and finished it off with an apple and a piece of chocolate. You should really treat yourself here. My dental surgery was at 12:30 p.m. Thanks to the pizza, at 11 a.m. I didn’t need to eat anything else all day.

This is really important especially on the 1st day. Even if you wanted to eat, it would be difficult. The injection has a very long effect. So you only have a little feeling in your tongue, cheek and so on.

This ensures that even the best prescriptions do not help you much on the first day after the dental surgery. Everything feels bad. If your stomach is rumbling now, it can even harm the healing process.

    Why Is Protein Important

Because you wont be able to eat many whole foods while your mouth heals, its a good idea to choose foods that are high in protein and other nutrients. Protein aids recovery, and plays an important role in rebuilding healthy new tissue.

When it comes to choosing foods that are protein-rich, yoghurt is a great option. Besides its high protein content, its also full of calcium. The texture also makes it easy to consume while your mouth still feels tender.

Another great source of protein is scrambled eggs, which are easy to chew, especially as your mouth starts to heal. If you feel ready to start eating more solid foods, try a soft fish like cooked salmon, which is generally easy to chew and swallow with minimal effort.

It had been almost a decade since I had my wisdom teeth removed, and I had either forgotten or blacked out what the aftermath was like. Like a fool, I had a full week of meetings and interviews scheduled for my book, not realizing that I would look like a chipmunk and barely be able to open my mouth for 24 hours.

My oral surgeon of course sent me home with a one pager on how to care for my mouth and what not to eat in the days and weeks that followed. But having lived through it in the real world, I thought I could put the instructions into more useful terms with recipes and meal plan guidance.

More importantly, the food suggestions left a lot to be desired from a nutrition, not to mention, a pleasure standpoint. Below Ive put together some liquid foods that will fit the bill in the early days following wisdom teeth removal and some softer things that you can transition to as you heal.

It took me 4 or 5 days before I was able to eat a real meal with solid foods that werent pureed. But moreover, I stuck with mostly soft foods for a total of two weeks, which meant I needed quite a few ideas in my arsenal.
