History Of An Old Fashioned

Now that weve covered how to make an Old Fashioned, lets take a look at the history of this cocktail.

Whilst this story isnt as wild as the origin of the Moscow Mule or even the Margarita, its still fascinating.

One of the most prominent claims comes from The Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Founded in 1881, The Pendennis Club was a private social club based on those prominent in London at the time. Its thought to be one of the first social clubs in Kentucky, if not the United States.

Links between The Pendennis Club and the Old Fashioned cocktail started in 1931. In a book called In Old Waldorf Bar Days the writer, Albert Stevens Crocket, claimed:

This was brought to the old Waldorf in the days of its sit-down Bar, and introduced by, or in honor of, Col. James E. Pepper, of Kentucky, proprietor of a celebrated whiskey of the period. The Old-fashioned Whiskey cocktail was said to have been the invention of a bartender at the famous Pendennis Club in Louisville, of which Col. Pepper was a member.

However, Cocktail Historian David Wondrich, casts serious doubt about this Old Fashioned origin story.

He says:

Since the Chicago Daily Tribune was already discussing “old fashioned cocktails” in February of 1880 and the Pendennis Club wasnt founded until 1881, I think its safe to pronounce this myth busted.

Knob Creek Straight Rye Whisky

Knob Creek Straight Rye Whiskey is probably the best and most expensive of the bunch. You get what you pay for and this taste is on another level to the rest of our options.

This is reflected in Amazon reviews too. One reviewer said:

“I had been wanting to try this for a while. On Youtube whiskey connoisseur videos this always wins out for the best Rye whiskey.

This whiskey is full-on. I did a Pepsi challenge with Bulleit Rye and I was shocked as the Bulleit felt weak and smooth in comparison to this .

This is considerably nicer than Bulleit. In fact Bulleit is not even close. I used to love Bulleit and it was my favourite Rye. And I liked it more than Woodford Reserve Rye, Jack Daniels Rye and Jim Beam Rye. But the difference between Bullet and Woodford was slight. This Knob Creek Rye is a whole other level and just feels full on. If you want a Rye whiskey this is the one to get over all of the others.

A Classic Cocktail The Old Fashioned Will Always Be A Delicious Bourbon Drink That Never Goes Out Of Style

Old Fashioned

Thanks in part to Don Draper and Mad Men, the Old Fashioned cocktail saw a resurgence in popularity in the last decade. I know both of my parents loved them and I recall I loved stealing that bourbon soaked cherry whenever I could. Its a simple drink with emphasis on the spirit and I think perfect for winter.

While the vast majority of people head into the New Year with a profession to cut out Im more pragmatic. Ill cut back but not cut out and a cocktail like this, with the bourbon forward and not a lot of fancy additions, serves up great taste without a lot of frou frou on the rim or in garnishes.

I was a bit surprised myself when I discovered that I have shared on this blog a couple of versions of an Old-Fashioned but never the original drink what? Time to fix that. I served these to friends on Christmas Day and it was time to right that wrong I think they are a fantastic winter drink.

The heyday of the Old Fashioned was in the late 1800s and early 1900s when it acquired the handle by which we now know it. For decades it had been simply known as a whiskey cocktail.

When bartenders of the post-Civil War days started getting too fancy with their garnishes, cocktail purists began calling for a return to sanity. Cocktail purists are a cranky bunch arent they I always wonder exactly who they are? They are so rigid and righteous sometimes that doggone it they make me want a drink!

May 29, 2014 – The Old Fashioned earns its stripes, and you’ll see why it’s been a popular cocktail for a long time when you make it yourself!

The main differences between Manhattan vs Old Fashioned are: Manhattan is made with Sweet Vermouth, whereas Old Fashioned is made with sugar. Manhattan is a dry cocktail with savory notes, whereas Old Fashioned is a sweet cocktail. Manhattan is served in a coupe straight up, whereas Old Fashioned is served in a rocks glass.

Timeless Maker’s Mark Old Fashioned Recipe The Cocktail . This is a twist on the traditional Old Fashioned. Take a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry in a large glass or tumbler with ice. Add a dash of Angostura bitters and a dash of Peychaud’s bitters. Muddle together. Pour into a shaker, add, the whisky, and the simple syrup.

Sugar Cube Or Simple Syrup

Old Fashioned purists say the proper thing to do is to muddle a sugar cube with the bitters in the bottom of the rocks glass. Non-purists, like myself, think that’s nice but the sugar never seems to fully dissolve this way. Either my muddling skills are weak , or there might be another way.

I’m in favor of using simple syrup for an Old Fashioned because it’s easy and convenient. Here’s how to make it.

So Where Does The Old Fashioned Come Into It

By the 1860s bartenders were experimenting with all kinds of ingredients. To the point where if you ordered one, you werent sure what kind of Old Fashioned recipe youd actually get. Itd be different every time.

Customers were frustrated with this. They soon began to request their cocktail made theOld Fashioned way.

Over the years the name of the cocktail was shortened to simply An Old Fashioned.

The Barrel Aged Makers Maple Old

December 1, 2016 | Whisky Advocate

After a day on Wyomings cowboy powder, a cold can of beans just aint gonna cut it. Thats why chef-owner Paul OConnor is serving up creative country cuisine, like bone marrow and cheddar fondue and buffalo-fried quail with celery root slaw and Jackson hot sauce. Theres plenty of Jägermeister, beer, and spicy Margaritas flowing in this rambunctious outpost, but saddle up at the bar on one of the custom leather saddle stools and veteran bartender Tobias Gelber will pour you an Old-Fashioned, aged in-house in 5-liter barrels. I am a big fan of aging cocktails in barrels, as it adds a new level of complexity to the cocktail. Whats good for bourbon, rum, and wine is good for most spirit-based cocktails, says Gelber, who adapted the recipe for us using more convenient oak spirals. The recipe makes ten servings.

Where The Manhattan Was Born

Maker

The urban myth is the 170-year-recipe for the perfect Manhattan cocktail was born at the the ManhattanClub in New York City in the 1870s. Fun fact is that it was supposed to have been invented for Winston Churchills mother, the American socialite Jennie Jerome.

This might all be false but it can be seen in one of the first cocktail recipes books, The Flowing Bowl by bartender William Schmidt, published in 1891. Whenever and wherever, the Manhattan has become one of the most popular cocktails of all time.

If using a robust bourbon that’s bottled at a flavorful 90 proof, this is not going to be a light drink. If you pour a full 2 ounces of water, the whiskey is knocked down to a pleasant 22 percent ABV . That’s a comfortable range for a short, casual sipper and will retain a nice whiskey flavor.

How To Make The Perfect Old Fashioned

Imagine a world in which the Old Fashioned was never created. Cutting the recipe from existence would Thanos-snap a sizable chunk from the art of mixology, knocking out a fundamental pillar of cocktail culture, all but erasing the Don Draper-like flair that has buzzed around bars since the original whiskey cocktail was created in the early 1800s. Itd be an existential threat to the bartending industry.

The way we think about mixology would be profoundly different for the very simple fact that the Old Fashioned is the primordial cocktail. It is, after all, the very definition of one dating all the way back to 1806, when legendary journalist Harry Croswell published in the May 13 issue of The Balance and Columbian Repository a simple definition of the word cocktail. In response to a readers query, Croswell stated that a cocktail is a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters. It was the very first time cocktail had been defined and echoes the basic Old Fashioned recipe enthusiasts are all too familiar with.

Of course, that basic concoction of spirit, sugar, water and bitters has been built upon, stretched, deconstructed, and given more than a few ostentatious flourishes since then, but the Old Fashioned recipe retains such command over the bartending industry mostly because of the beautiful simplicity it represents so well.
