How To Make Golden Milk

There are many variations of the golden milk or turmeric tea recipe, which is great because there is something to suit everyones taste. We think convenience is pretty important, so we have kept this recipe basic and easy. After the recipe, we have included a list of other possible tasty inclusions to your golden milk.

We have used ground turmeric and cinnamon but you may replace with grated fresh turmeric and cinnamon sticks if you wish. If you choose to use any of these things, dont forget to strain your golden milk before you drink it.

It is also possible to buy pre-packaged golden milk mix if you wish. We recommend Nutra Organics Golden Latte.

Turmeric Tea Is A Wellness Superstar

I was first introduced to turmeric tea lattes years ago on one of my retreats at Sanoviv Medical Institute.

Ive since enjoyed it at healthy cafes across the country and recently started making my own at home.

Its simple and really feels like a treat each night, kind of like a nightcap but way healthier and more nourishing.

Everyone can benefit from the anti-inflammatory and high-antioxidant activity of golden milk.

Its a wonderful addition to your evening ritual for winding down before bedtime.

You can drink it any time of day, but I find it to be especially nice before bed. This warm drink will nourish your body from the inside out while you sleepits a no-brainer, really.

Health Benefits Of Golden Milk

The wellness benefits of a golden milk latte are nearly endless, from boosting your immune system to being helpful for weight loss. The yummy concoction has been shown to protect against many illnesses, along with improving mood, supporting brain function, lowering blood sugar levels and fighting neurodegenerative disease.

The active component in turmeric is curcumin, which has been commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries for its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants aid cell function, lower the risk of infections and disease and fight cell damage.

Along with this, cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric are anti-inflammatory, and shown to reduce the risk of many diseases, from cancer to heart disease to Alzheimer’s. They also reduce joint pain from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

While I’m all for not getting cancer, my motivation for trying golden milk was its purported sleep benefits, which my aunt had enthusiastically explained. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. After only one evening of sipping the spicy, pungent beverage, I fell asleep within minutes.

Health Benefits Of Drinking Golden Milk

Sleepytime Golden Milk

So what does turmeric tea do? As if better sleep and morning comfort weren’t good enough reasons to take a sip, there are even more benefits to it. Turmeric is a key ingredient in Ayurveda for its strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The spoonful of coconut oil is important because curcumin, the powerful active ingredient in turmeric is fat soluble. This means the fat in the coconut oil helps the body absorb it. But wait, sis, there’s more!

A bit of raw unfiltered honey provides the touch of sweetness and helps you capture even more wellness benefits in this golden milk for sleep. Honey is no slouch. It has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. But if you want to make this recipe vegan, swap out the honey for maple syrup. The cute recipe name won’t technically apply but I won’t tell anybody. Next up is cinnamon, which complements the sweetness of the honey and provides an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory assist to the turmeric. And finally, black pepper helps the body absorb the curcumin before it’s metabolized.

Key Ingredients For Turmeric Tea

Turmeric Milk (for better sleep) | Golden Milk Recipe | anti-inflammatory drink
  • Ground Turmeric Powder:In this case, ground turmeric powder is actually better than the fresh root as its more concentrated. Ground turmeric powder is traditionally used in golden milk turmeric tea.
  • Freshly Ground Black Pepper:
  • Raw honey
  • Pure vanilla extract

Cardamom, ginger, and cinnamon not only add a wonderful flavor but they are each packed with antioxidants and offer a plethora of impressive healing benefits.

While I love vanilla in most recipes, I personally usually dont use it here. The cardamon, ginger, and cinnamon already give this treat plenty of wonderful flavor without being too overpowering.

Turmeric Tea Serving Size

Think of golden milk as a small healing treat, not a Starbucks-size drink. ¼ to ½ cup is traditional and is the perfect amount to obtain the healing benefits without overloading your digestive system.

I encourage you to try golden milk with very little added sweetener, as youll drink it before bed. A small amount of raw honey or coconut crystals would work great. The sweetener is not necessarily traditional but can be used if desired. Add to the pan off the heat if using. You could also toss a few Medjool dates into your batch of homemade almond milk to sweeten the base.

Tips For The Best Golden Milk

Once you make your golden turmeric milk a time or two, feel free to get creative. Sometimes Ill add ginger and if Im using a nut milk, Ill always add coconut oil. Coconut milk has quite a bit of fat, so I tend to skip the coconut oil when Im using coconut milk, but fat is most definitely needed to help the absorption of all the healing compounds.

Another benefit of coconut oil , is that coconut oil helps the turmeric milk froth it up.

The moral of the story is turmeric is good for you, its loaded with health benefits and its popular for a reason. So whip up a batch and do like I did on these photos, sprinkle some extra cinnamon and a fresh vanilla bean on top.

How Can Golden Milk Promote Better Sleep

Weve all heard the old wives tale that a warm glass of milk can help a person fall asleep. While there is no research to back this up, sticking to a bedtime routine with healthy nighttime rituals is a part of good sleep hygiene. And there may be components of Sleepytime Golden Milk that really can relax the body and prepare it for a good nights sleep.

Turmeric As discussed above, turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties, may aid with digestion, and can lower blood sugar levels. Lessening aches and pains and soothing your stomach before bed could make it easier to fall asleep. Healthy blood sugar levels promote longer sleep.

Ginger Ginger also has anti-inflammatory properties and can help calm the stomach. It is known to soothe sore muscles, relieve indigestion and nausea, and provide relief from menstrual cramps making sleep more attainable.

Nutmeg Nutmeg contains anti-inflammatory properties as well. Consumed in small doses, it is thought to be a natural sleep aid.

Honey Honey is soothing and is well-believed to promote relaxation. Its also been shown to let tryptophan enter the brain more easily.

Cinnamon Cinnamon contains anti-inflammatory properties too. However, some people find the scent to be alerting or activating rather than calming and soothing. If you are one of these people, skip the cinnamon if youre having your Golden Milk before bed.

How To Make Turmeric Milk

1. Bring milk to a boil. In India many people use raw milk, so the milk is boiled first. Though I dont use raw milk, I prefer to heat the it as we believe boiled milk is easy for digestion.

2. Allow the milk to cool down a bit. When the milk is slightly hot, add black pepper powder and turmeric powder or turmeric paste made from fresh root. My kids drink unsweetened milk, so I do not add any sweetener.

3. Stir well until the turmeric blends well with milk. Mix well with a spoon and transfer to a cup. I do not filter the cream or pepper, if you prefer you can strain the milk.

It is best to consume turmeric milk when it is warm preferably at bed time.
