Why Use Almond Milk In Smoothies

Banana, Cacao & Almond Milk Smoothie Recipe – As seen on The Voice Kids

Almond milk is a dairy free, plant based milk thats made with almonds and water. Its great for using in smoothies because its a dairy free milk that helps to achieve a creamy texture. Here are a few notes about using almond milk in smoothies:

  • Can you taste almond milk in smoothies? Not really! Most almond milk has a very neutral flavor, so its virtually imperceptible in a smoothie.
  • Does almond milk make smoothies thicker? No. Almond milk is a good liquid that helps smoothies blend, but its texture is closer to water than milk. By itself, it does not lend creaminess to a smoothie. But in concert with other ingredients, it helps to form just the right smoothie texture.

Chia Seed & Almond Milk Smoothie Recipe

Weve already discussed the health benefits of strawberries, so now we are going to focus on chia seeds. Although theyve only recently become extremely popular across the globe, these tiny seeds have been around for a long time. In fact, they represented one of the main foods in the Aztec and Mayan diet, since these civilizations believed that the seeds had supernatural powers. While you certainly cant expect something supernatural to happen after eating chia seeds, you may experience very impressive health benefits.

Incorporating this food into your diet is arguably the best and easiest way to ensure you consume a sufficient amount of omega-3 fatty acids. These compounds are vital for protecting your cardiovascular system. Thanks to the high manganese, phosphorus, and calcium content in chia seeds, your bone strength may increase. On top of that, you could have a lower risk of suffering from osteoporosis. In case you are a vegan, you should consider consuming chia seeds more often since they contain a lot of high-quality protein.

What Youll Need

  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds

How to Prepare

In order to make a more refreshing smoothie, you should use frozen strawberries. Combine the almond milk and chia seeds in a bowl and whisk for half a minute. Place it in your refrigerator for 10 minutes before pouring the mixture into your blender along with the other ingredients. Blend until smooth and serve immediately. This recipe yields two servings.

Healthy Almond Milk Smoothie

The antioxidants in pomegranate seeds not only can strengthen your immune system but have anti-inflammatory properties as well. These compounds are able to prevent blood clots and can reduce your cholesterol levels by increasing the level of oxygen carried via blood. This fruit is considered to be a great tool for reducing the risk of a few different types of cancer, primarily breast and prostate cancer. Pomegranate seeds are also noted for improving memory, and may even help prevent Alzheimers disease.

Cinnamon is a very healthy ingredient as well, which comes as no surprise seeing as how it has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. It is an incredible source of manganese but also contains a lot of calcium, iron, and vitamin K. Cinnamon may boost your cognitive function, and may also play an important part in preventing Alzheimers. Aside from that, it has certain anti-diabetic properties and is anti-inflammatory.

Almond Milk Contains Both Calcium And Vitamin D

Almond milk is often enriched with vitamin D and calcium, which are extremely important nutrients. The latter represents a mineral that plays a vital role in keeping bones healthy and reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. On the other hand, vitamin D is a nutrient that is hardly ever found in food. Instead, your body produces it when your skin is exposed to sunlight. This vitamin also promotes bone health. Apart from that, it can reduce the risk of diabetes, and may even lower the risk for various types of cancer.

Benefits Of Almond Milk For Your Health

Almond milk has become quite a popular drink and milk alternative in recent years. It is rich in many beneficial nutrients our body needs. It is made by blending almonds with water. The mixture is then strained through a strainer to remove any solid particles. Its nutty flavor and creamy texture lend well to many different healthy smoothie recipes. It can be found in most grocery stores, however, if you dont make it yourself at home. When choosing your almond milk, it is best to reach for one that doesnt contain any excess or added sugar. You will also find that most almond milks are enriched with vitamins, minerals, and protein. How To Make A Frozen Fruit Smoothie

Making frozen fruit smoothies isnt rocket science. A little down below, youll find my favorite frozen fruit smoothie recipes.

If you want to create your own smoothie recipes, heres how you can do it.

If you want to avoid the five major mistakes people make when making smoothies, check out this article: How Long Do Smoothies Last?

1. Start with a Liquid Base

When were making frozen fruit smoothies, we want to start with a base. Its best to always have some liquid in our smoothies. One serving usually needs about ½ 1 cup of liquid. Good options are:

  • filtered water
  • soy milk, coconut milk, hemp milk, rice milk, etc.
  • dairy milk
  • fruit juice

The lowest calorie version is obviously plain water. Unsweetened nut milk or coconut water can also be a healthy, low-fat, and low-calorie choice.

Adding too much fruit juice may spike your blood sugar levels, so its best not to overdo it.

Also, be careful with coconut milk , as its high in fat and calories.

2. Add Some Frozen Fruits

After youve chosen your liquid base, its time to add some fruits to your smoothie. Id recommend using both frozen fruits and fresh fruits in smoothies.

If youre using too many frozen ingredients, it can make your smoothie too slushy.

If you dont use any ice or frozen fruits, your smoothie wont taste as good as it could.

Every smoothie I make will have some frozen ingredients in it.

You can completely skip the ice, and add some frozen fruits or veggies instead.

And now for the recipe. Actually, I feel a little guilty about calling this a recipe. Basically, you take some fresh, delicious, healthy ingredients, whip them up in a blender and enjoy. Not much cooking involved.

First, gather your ingredients: Almond milk , ice cubes, fresh blueberries and strawberries, and honey.

I used unsweetened Silk Almond. Its only 35 calories a serving, and a wonderful source of Vitamin D. Drop all of that healthy goodness in a blender, and mix.

Strawberry Avocado Keto Smoothie

This recipe, from wholesomeyum.com, sounds like it should be complicated. That’s not the case at all. The recipe just uses four different ingredients. Having a recipe this simple on hand is always a great idea, especially on days where you don’t have much time. Then there’s the strawberry avocado flavor combination. It really does work well and the ingredients help to create a fantastic texture for the smoothie.

Mixed Berry Smoothie Or The Best Kind Of Ice Cream Craving Fix

I am already 31 weeks pregnant. Yes, its going fast. And all I am craving is ice cream. The thing is, I never eat ice cream from the store. They contain way too much added sugar, and also milk upsets my stomach very quickly.

But some days, I dont have the time to make my own ice cream, and the best ice cream craving replacement when pregnant is definitely a thick smoothie. Its strawberry season in New Zealand, so its the perfect timing!

I love to buy LOTS of fresh strawberries in summer and freeze them for the year. Strawberries are delicious keto fruits to use in any recipe. I use frozen strawberries mainly in smoothies but also in muffins.

This mixed berry Smoothie is using a low-carb smoothie recipe with almond milk. I love this almond milk because its light, dairy-free, and low-calorie only 16 kcal/ 100ml. Plus, the vanilla almond milk doesnt contain added sugar, and it adds a delicious vanilla flavor to smoothies.

The texture of this mixed berry smoothie is thick and creamy very close to a berry ice cream. I found this smoothie really satisfying, too, and I did not reach the pantry after drinking it.

I simply added a few dried goji berries to naturally enhance the sweetness. Goji berries contain a low amount of natural sugar and are the best superfood to add to a smoothie.

How To Store Homemade Almond Milk

No matter which of the three methods above you choose, you’ll be way happier than most store bought milk. Homemade almond milk doesn’t have any shelf stabilizers, which means it won’t stay “fresh” as long. I suggest:

  • Store almond milk in a clean, glass container with a lid. Mason jars as well as carafes work great.
  • Refrigerate almond milk for up to 4 days. The almonds and water will separate in the fridge, so give it a good shake before using.

Almond Milk Is Low In Calories

Healthy Almond Milk Smoothie

One of the best things about almond milk is that its low in calories. While a cup of cows milk contains about 150 calories per 8 oz, one cup of almond milk has between 30 and 50 calories. The exact amount of calories depends on the product you buy. Since it is low in calories, almond milk is a great choice for anyone who wants to shed extra pounds. When you combine it with fruits and vegetables in a smoothie, you wont have to worry about the calorie count.

How To Pick The Best Strawberries

Look for local berries that are vine-ripened if possible. Late Spring and early Summer are usually the best times to locate local berry farms you can pick fresh strawberries for your personal use. Check into the you pick days for discounts and bring the kids along to help you grab the most berries. Not only can you clean and use immediately, but strawberries also preserve wonderfully when frozen, or made into pies, jams, and jellies.

Ingredients In This Almond Milk Smoothie

There are lots of different ways to make an almond milk smoothie: this ones our favorite! You cant go wrong with strawberry banana, that classic crowd-pleasing flavor. Our three year old absolutely loves this smoothie, which makes us confident you will too. Heres what you need to make our favorite smoothie with almond milk:

  • Frozen strawberries : Frozen strawberries add just the right texture. Theyre easy to find at the store and great to store for making on demand smoothies.
  • Fresh banana: We always have bananas at our house, but we never remember to freeze them. So we always use room temperature bananas in our smoothie recipes.
  • Almond milk : Use plain or unflavored almond milk. Vanilla also works, but we like using almond milk with no artificial flavors.
  • Ice: Ice adds just the right frozen texture to this fruity puree.

How To Make Almond Milk With Almond Cow #2

When the Almond Cow first came out, I was like: can it really be worth the cost?! The answer is yes… and no. Almond Cow is a milking machine that can blend plant milk in minutes. This machine costs $195, yet can make 5 cups of almond milk using 1 cup of raw almonds . Even though it has almond in its name, the Almond Cow can also make oat, coconut, cashew, hemp, walnut… pretty much any other plant-based milk I could ever want. It’s pretty genius.

Yet for the quick and easy method the Almond Cow provides, the final product isn’t as good as the blender method above. Using a cheesecloth allows you to squeeze out all the healthy fats to create a creamy almond milk. The Almond Cow “rushes” the process and makes a less flavorful, frothy version of almond milk. Yet clean up is SO much easier and the entire process is quickwhich is why I have an Almond Cow. Days when I just don’t have the time to squeeze a cheesecloth and wash more dishes this is how I make almond milk.

The whole process from start to clean up took less than 5 minutes, and the almond milk recipe I followed was simple and straight forward. The milk was foamy + easy for me to customize how I wanted it with adding dates, maple syrup, etc.

Tip: When making homemade almond milk in the Almond Cow, I strongly suggest soaking the almonds overnight to get them creamier.

Kale & Almond Milk Smoothie Recipe

Mixed Berrys Almond Milk Smoothie Recipe

This is both an incredibly delicious and healthy smoothie recipe. There are not many foods that offer the same health benefits as kale. After all, it is among the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. Kale is a great source of copper, manganese, vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium. This leafy green contains extremely powerful antioxidants known as quercetin and kaempferol, which can help protect your body from inflammation, viruses, and serious health conditions like cancer and heart disease. Considering the fact that kale is one of the worlds best sources of vitamin K, it can help improve your bone health.

Here’s a simple shake that uses a classic flavor combination. The recipe comes from Amanda over at theskinnyfork.com and it only uses four ingredients. You don’t have to stick with peanut butter as a key flavor either. This can be swapped for almond butter, which helps to bring out the flavor of the almond milk too.

How To Easily Blend Your Smoothie

Add your almond milk and strawberries to a blender and pulse in 30-second increments until smooth. If you prefer a chunkier drink, you can lightly pulse leaving bits of berry in the drink. We usually use unsweetened almond milk for this and add a bit of raw honey if it isn’t sweet enough after blended. The fresh strawberries should offer plenty of sweetness.

If you want, you can also add in some chia seeds, nutritional yeast flakes, or even a bit of organic cocoa powder for a change.
