There several reasons feeding raw food to your dog is beneficial.

  • Raw food ensures dogs always eat fresh, wholesome, and allergen-free foods as no chemicals, additives, or fillers are used in raw diets, hence preventing allergies.
  • BARF diets provide healthy fats and carbohydrates. Its a great way of helping a dog to lose weight or maintain weight. A homemade raw diet allows you to manually control the fat level in each meal, promoting a healthy weight even further. For instance, you can pick lean meats to promote a healthy weight.
  • When making your own BARF recipes, you only pick those safe ingredients that wont cause an allergic reaction in your pet. If you dont know the foods that trigger allergies in your dog, we suggest doing an At-Home Food Dog Allergy Test before picking the ingredients for your pups next meal.
  • Raw foods that are unprocessed, fresh and whole enable our pets to thrive and avoid issues like cancer.
  • Raw foods are more easily digested and contain important vitamins and enzymes, which cooking destroys. More easily digestible food means more efficient absorption of nutrients and a faster inflammatory response. This may help prevent or relieve symptoms of allergies or digestive issues.

Support Bone & Joint Health

Many dog breeds suffer from bone and joint-related conditions including hip and elbow dysplasia, back problems, etc. Raw dog food contains crushed bone, which is high in key nutrients for bone and joint support like calcium, phosphorus, glucosamine, chondroitin, and collagen.

Because raw food may be more bioavailable than cooked or processed dog food, these nutrients become more easily absorbed when your pup eats a raw diet.

What Does Barf Mean

Adopted correctly, a BARF diet can increase the health, life expectancy and reproductive capacity. As a result, this can mean fewer visits to the vet. The term biologically appropriate means that the food that is ingested is easily digested and is absorbed by the body rather than being passed through the system as waste. The dog will use the many nutrients to stay strong and healthy.

Unfortunately, many non-raw dog foods are highly processed and full of additives and fillers and/or carbohydrates which have a low biological value and are passed through the body as waste.

Because a raw diet consists of minimal carbohydrates and absolutely no processed ingredients whatsoever, the biological value of the food is significantly higher meaning that the dog absorbs virtually every bit of goodness from what they ingest. One of the first things that new raw feeders will notice, once their dog has adapted to a raw diet, is a vast reduction in bowel movements and a smaller, firmer stool. Of course, this is to be expected when you have less rubbish going in, you will have less rubbish coming out! This is just one benefit of feeding a balanced raw diet though. Other valuable pluses include:

Raw meat, offal, bone and some green nutrients are the key components of a balanced raw diet. Each one offers different yet vital nutritional benefits, plus the all-natural, un-processed ingredients mean that canines are able to absorb and utilise almost all of the goodness they consume.

How To Choose The Best Ingredients

Example of Balanced Raw Dog Food Recipe

Now that you know what you want to make its time to put together a shopping list and do some sourcing.

The staple of your dogs diet is meat. Some dog owners will be lucky enough to have a local farmer, meat processor or abattoir nearby. But supermarket meats are ok too. Knowing your butcher or farmer makes it easier to get a selection of organs and various types of meat.

When choosing meat, the fat content should be between 10% and 20%. Packaged meat should say 80%, 85% or 90% lean. The fat content is the remaining amount so 20%, 15% or 10%. Thats what you need to look for.

As well as meat, youll need a selection of organs for these recipes. Ive built up a rapport with my butcher so I can text and have him put organs aside. Then I dont have to worry about him selling out if I cant get there.

Buy the best quality meat, poultry, eggs and produce you can afford. Remember, this is a long-term commitment so you want to stay within your means. At the top end of the scale are free range, grass-fed or organic meats. Theyll be free of antibiotics and growth hormones and raised on pastures in the fresh air.

Avoid genetically-modified products as much as possible. So look for organic produce. Organic means it has been grown without the use of harmful pesticides or GMO seeds. The cleaner the food, the better it is for your dogs health.

Now its time to get started with homemade raw. And youre sure to have tasters standing by, eager to try some samples.

Creating An Organ Blend For My Dogs

When I don’t have access to GreenTripe.com’s organ blend, I mix up my own with either pork or beef organs and there are times when it’s a blend of pork and beef. My organ blend is a mixture of heart and liver. And, when I can get it, I’ll also add pork kidneys as well. This is the only blend that I make I don’t buy poultry organs for my blend because they aren’t as easy to source for me.

You may be tempted to ask me how much of each organ is added to my blend and I’m going to disappoint you by saying that I grind and mix up everything I receive. If four pigs were butchered, then my blend may have four hearts, four livers, and eight kidneys. I transfer my blend to freezer-safe containers and use it when needed.

I never thought I would be one of those dog owners who made homemade human food for their pups. Not in a million years.

But when Butters recently fell sick with an upset stomach, our vet advised us to feed him a bland diet chicken and rice without any kind of seasoning. So thats what we did we poached a chicken, shredded it in a food processor, and mixed in some white rice and fed him this bland diet for 3 days.

Thats when I started to do some research on homemade dog food, and I have been so amazed as to how many different kinds of vegetables dogs can have. And with the help of Balance IT, you can create so many different recipes for your pup!

Now the best part about making homemade dog food just like making anything at home is that you know exactly what is going into the dog bowl, and not any of that questionable gelatinous gunk from the canned food.

What Is A Raw Food Diet For Dogs

How many raw food options to feed the dog? Can you feed your dog high-quality best raw meat? Is raw food diets for dogs better for dogs than traditional dog foods like kibble or canned? What is the best raw dog food in Canada? All these questions will be answered, but first, you need to understand what raw dog food is.

A raw dog diet is a meal of uncooked food habitually consumed by a dog. The raw diet generally consists of raw meat from beef, poultry, pork, and fish, as well as dog-safe uncooked vegetables and fruits.

Raw dog diets usually consist of the following ingredients:

Raw Dog Diets are sometimes described as BARF . This term was coined by the Australian vet Ian Billinghurst.

In 1993, Billinghursts book, Give Your Dog a Bone suggested that feeding your dog raw meat was natural and healthier than feeding the pet with cooked food or dry kibble.

Why Fasting Is Good For Your Dogs Health

What does balanced raw dog food consist of?

From start to finish it can take a dog anything up to 20 hours to digest a full meal, a full meal being the amount it can fit in its stomach at a single sitting.

This is a very long time when compared to humans, who eat much smaller meals and digest them much faster.

Why is the time it takes a dog to digest important?

Because a dogs digestive system needs to rest for periods to operate at optimum efficiency.

More than this, if the system doesnt get a chance to rest it can be harmful to the dogs health .

Our advice is to feed your dog once a day, never to leave food down for it and to fast your dog at least once a week.
