Healthy Spinach and Artichoke Dip Recipe

The classic spinach and artichoke dip is upgraded into the cheesiest, crustiest French bread ever!

So we kind of got another corgi puppy last weekend.

No, wait. It actually happened. We flew to Sacramento, drove an hour further North, picked up the pup, and drove back about 400 miles back home to Los Angeles. All in one day. It was quite the trek, but worth every minute.

Since we brought him home, theres been a lot of sleepless nights and quite a bit of adjusting but we are so happy with Ollie.

Butters is also coping with his new life, fighting over toys and getting a little jealous, but he loves him to death! Or at least I think he does.

But enough about these guys. Lets talk about this French bread. This French bread thats unbelievably crusty, cheesy and just loaded with everyones favorite spinach and artichoke dip.

Once you make this, you wont ever want to have the dip by itself anymore. It was truly destined to be slathered and baked on top of a French bread loaf. And theres no judgment here if you make a meal out of this. I did it at least twice!

About 6 cups vegetable oil, for frying
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup finely grated fresh Parmesan
One 24-ounce jar marinara, heated, for serving

Steps:

  • Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook about a minute less than the recommended cooking time. Drain the pasta and spread it in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Let cool and pat completely dry with paper towels.
  • Pour about 2 inches of oil into a large Dutch oven and heat over medium heat until a deep-fry thermometer reaches 375 degrees F.
  • Fry the pasta in 3 batches until golden brown and crispy, 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, to a mini processor or spice grinder, add the basil, thyme, rosemary, oregano, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, black pepper and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Process until finely ground.
  • Remove the fried pasta from the oil, drain on paper towels, then sprinkle immediately with some of the seasoning mix. Repeat, working in batches, with the rest of the pasta and seasoning mix.

What Is The Origin Of The Spinach And Artichoke Dip

One of the most popular dips is spinach and artichoke dip. There is not much information about the creation or the origin of this dip and why it has become the most famous dip today. One story relates that when American soldiers returned from the front after the Second World War, they wanted to find some flavors which they had become accustomed to in Europe, including spinach, artichokes, but also garlic, lemon, Parmesan, olive oil and even crusty bread.

Since then, a large number of restaurant chains adopted the famous dip and it has become one of the classic appetizers in the United States. Moreover, the recipe from restaurants like Olive Garden, Cheesecake Factory, Applebees, TGIF, BJs, Ruby Tuesdays, Red Robin, UNOs or Claim Jumper, have become coveted recipes and some of them still remain secret.

Although this dip contains vegetables, it is nonetheless very caloric. Moreover, its success is also partly due to famous brands of mayonnaise , sour cream or cream cheese that helped boost their sales with recipes on their packaging.

Can I Use Fresh Spinach In Cheesy Spinach Artichoke Dip

copeland spinach artichoke dip recipe

Definitely! To use fresh spinach, make sure you first remove any woody stems. In a skillet, add a couple teaspoons of olive oil and cook until wilted. Chop and then squeeze out any remaining moisture. For this recipe, 10 ounces fresh spinach should cook down to 3/4 cup drained, and is equal to 5 ounces of frozen spinach.

What To Serve With Spinach Artichoke Dip

This is a hot spinach artichoke dip and I like to it with crostini. Its also great with crackers, chunks of sourdough bread or even tortilla chips!

If you happen to have flour tortillas on hand, they make great dippers once baked in the oven! Lightly brush them with olive oil and season them with a pinch of salt and garlic powder. Bake at 350°F 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned and crisp.

If youre looking for a fresh crunch , carrots, celery, mini bell peppers or cucumbers are also great dippers!

Make The Best Copycat Spinach Artichoke Dip

Preheat oven to 350ºF.

Use Olive Oil to coat small baking dish , and the bottom of a skillet.

Heat oil in skillet to medium heat

Next rinse the spinach, and cut the stems off. Chop spinach into pieces. Also chop garlic into pieces. Add both the spinach and garlic to heated skillet.

Stir spinach and garlic frequently until cooked. If spinach gets dry, add a little more olive oil. It does not take long to cook 5 to 10 minutes. Once spinach and garlic appear to be done remove from heat.

Before you make the rest of the dip, rinse the artichoke hearts thoroughly and shop to desired consistency. I like larger pieces of artichoke hearts so I just chop loosely.

Now it is time to bake the base of the best copycat spinach artichoke dip. Take the 8 oz package of softened cream cheese and mix it with the alfredo sauce and garlic powder. You may need a hand mixer to get the cream cheese and alfredo sauce one consistency.

Once the base is made, stir in spinach, artichoke hearts, Mozzarella , and Parmesan and Romano cheese mix. Grind pepper on top.

Lastly, sprinkle cheese on top of the spinach artichoke dip. Do not cover, so the cheese can melt and form a delicious cheesy crust!

Bake at 350ºF for 25 to 30 minutes. Until cheese is brown and bubbly.

Serve with tortilla chips, crackers, pita chips, or bread! Enjoy!

  • Lightly sprinkle cheese on top
  • Bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes
  • Enjoy the best copycat spinach artichoke dip!

The History Of Dips In The United States

A dip or dipping sauce is a condiment in which you generally dip chips, tortilla chips, bread or raw vegetables. The idea of these dips really took off in the 50s when eating in front of the TV became more common. TV dinners and especially dips became widespread as they do not require any utensils. CPG companies like Lays, known for its chips, helped push this trend.

In 1952, the Lipton company, which had a huge success with its instant soups, began to think on other ways to market its successful products. Thats when the company began promoting the use of its instant soup mixes in combination with sour cream to prepare quick and easy dips. A new category of snack was born and this category has seen its sales explode as television sets became ubiquitous.

Today, these dips are a must for parties or cocktails but also especially when gathering around the TV to watch events like the Oscars or the Superbowl.

Ingredients For The Best Copycat Spinach Artichoke Dip

The creamy base of spinach artichoke dip is made from cream cheese, and alfredo sauce. The brand of sauce and cream cheese is up to you. I chose Classico four cheese alfredo sauce because it was on sale. I also chose to just use a generic cream cheese.

The next component to the best copycat spinach artichoke dip is, artichoke hearts and spinach. I chose to just pick a can of artichoke hearts, but they also sold artichoke hearts in jars. Whatever you prefer is fine. As for spinach, I wanted to use fresh spinach. I found it on sale for $0.99 a bunch, but you can choose to use frozen if you wish. I personally feel fresh tastes better, but its up to you and your budget!

The best part of the copycat spinach artichoke dip is the cheese. I found Sargento Mozzarella on sale for $1.25 for an 80z package. Any Mozzarella will be sufficient. I also bought a package that includes 2 cups of shredded Romano and Parmesan cheese. You can use different combinations of italian cheese. I have used Fontina cheese in place of Mozzarella , and it was also very delicious!

The last ingredients are seasonings and olive oil. If you have extra virgin olive oil thats great! I personally used just plain olive oil since I buy it in bulk. Since you are cooking with it, it doesnt make that much of a difference.

These are all the ingredients, dont worry I have a list below specifying all the ingredients and the amount you need!

Cheesecake Factory Hot Spinach and Cheese Dip | Spinach Artichoke Dip

When we go out to eat, its rare that well buy an appetizer or dessert. In fact, its rare that we buy two meals! However, theres one item that often appears on appetizer lists that always tempts me.

    Spinach artichoke dip.

LOVE spinach artichoke dip. Its full of tons of things that arent good for me, and I regret eating hours later because its full of lactose, but whenever I see it listed on a menu, those thoughts all disappear.

And the place that has my favorite kind of spinach artichoke dip? Applebees. Ive found out that not all restaurants make their recipes the same, and homemade spinach artichoke dips rarely satisfy me.

So for the longest time, Ive been on the search for a copycat recipe for Appleebees spinach artichoke dip , and I think I finally created it.

This recipe was so spot on, I could hardly believe it. And my mom, who is also a huge fan of Applebees spinach artichoke dip, agreed. It was practically an exact replica.

I think I like this version because it doesnt go heavy on the artichokes, which is my main complaint about some recipes. Theres just the perfect amount of all the different ingredients, that all combine together perfectly for a creamy and savory dish.
