Homemade dog food is such an easy way to spoil your dog and feel great about doing it. All you need is a stove and a large pot to make a yummy and healthy meal for your dog.

This recipe is the stovetop directions to make my Instant Pot Dog Food Recipe. I know not everyone has an Instant Pot so I decided to make directions that everyone can use.

These recipes came about because the commercial dog food options that were available to us didnt provide exactly what we were looking for in terms of optimal nutrition and we wanted something that didnt come with unnecessary additives, so we talked to our vet and decided that homemade dog food would be a great option for us.

A General Guideline For Preparing Homemade Dog Food

My DIY dog food recipe is more of a general guideline, rather than an exact meal plan that I follow each week. My dogs diet changes the same way ours does, depending on what we do and what we buy or grow.

However, we almost always stay with this basic formula:

  • 50 percent cooked protein
  • 25 percent cooked complex carbohydrates
  • Fats and supplements

Protein is always meat and usually chicken, though weve also used turkey, pork, and beef. We feed any and all parts of the animals, but most commonly, we saute chicken breasts or chicken thighs in coconut oil and ground turmeric.

Coconut oil has a host of health benefits for dogs, such as improving the skin and coat, increasing energy, aiding digestion, reducing allergic reactions, promoting wound healing, preventing yeast and fungal infections, and supporting arthritis or ligament problems.

Turmeric has long been studied for its powerful medicinal properties, including its use as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.

We add it to the coconut oil since it is fat-soluble, and use it to support our pugs joint health.

Speaking of dark meat, we feed thighs and breasts interchangeably. While well remove the skin from poultry and trim off excessive fat from red meat, we dont worry about buying the leanest meat possible for our dogs.

A little fat is necessary for a well-rounded diet.

They tend to be the leftovers in our produce bin, so we never have to buy, say, a whole head of cauliflower just for the dogs.

What Types Of Ingredients Are Good For Making Homemade Dog Food

Part of the beauty of making your own dogs food is that you can use a wide variety of different ingredients to suit your dogs needs and preferences. If your dog is allergic to chicken, you can use beef, pork or salmon.

If your dog hates salmon oil, you could substitute flaxseed to provide omega-3 fatty acids.

Similarly, your dog may need extra glucosamine and chondroitin, so you go to the extra effort to provide additional chicken cartilage.

Some of the most common ingredients you can use in your dogs food include the following. This is certainly not an exhaustive list, but it provides you with a good starting point and reference.

The following foods are generally regarded as safe for dogs if properly prepared.

Do Your Portion Research

You will need to do some research on how many calories your dog needs per day based on your dogs activity level and your dog’s weight. There are so many factors to consider that will vary due to the breed, size, age, and activity of your pet. My dog needs about 400 calories a day, and is a small dog weighing just 11 pounds.

How Do You Get Your Dog To Switch To A Homemade Dog Food

Most dogs will gladly give up their kibble or canned food if given the option of eating real food.

But some dogs do initially withdraw from a bowl full of chicken, rice, and vegetables, and owners must occasionally jump through a few hoops to get their dog to make the switch.

One good way to start is by simply providing your dog with his normal kibble or canned food, but with a bit of real, home-cooked food on top.

For example, you may want to scatter some shredded chicken or a drizzle of olive oil on top. Slowly, over the course of about a week or two, youll want to gradually replace some of his kibble with a little more natural food.

And this is also a good idea for dogs who will willingly switch.

If you go from a 100% kibble diet to a 100% home-cooked diet abruptly, you are probably going to stress out your dogs digestive system, causing diarrhea and gas.

But again, most dogs love home-cooked, all-natural dog foods, and quickly and readily make the switch.
