Sweet potatoes are a superfood for dogs that can tolerate them.

Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of potassium, manganese, and magnesium.

They also contain calcium, iron, and zinc and are low in sodium.

Sweet potatoes are high in dietary fiber which is good for digestive health.

They are low in fat and are rich in beta-carotene.

Sweet potatoes contain Vitamins A, C, E, and B6.

You can bake sweet potatoes, boil sweet potatoes, dehydrate sweet potatoes and even make a DIY toy using sweet potatoes!

However, some dogs are allergic to sweet potatoes so they should always be added to a dogs diet slowly if theyve never had them before.

How To Make The Dough

Are you ready for how easy this is?

Stir together the mashed sweet potato and peanut butter.

If you are wondering how to cook sweet potato for this recipe, you can peel and boil cubed sweet potato. Then mash it as you would for mashed potatoes. You could even freeze the mashed sweet potato in silicone muffin liners for easy portions!

Or bake whole sweet potatoes at 425 degrees F for 40-55 minutes until the sweet potato is soft and the skin has pulled away. Once the potato is cool, remove the skin and freeze the whole sweet potato! When you need one, just take it out of the freezer and defrost it really quickly in the microwave. Now youre ready to make this home-made dog treat recipe in a flash!

Next

Add the ground oat flour into the combined sweet potato and peanut butter.

Stir to combine using a spoon or your hands. I find it easier to mix this dough with my hands as it is a little sticky.

If for any reason the dough seems a little dry to you, just add a splash of water or unsweetened oat milk. OR a bit more peanut butter or sweet potato. And if the dough seems much too sticky to handle, a dash more flour will help to firm it up.

Yams and sweet potatoes are similar looking on the outside, but theyre very different inside. Yams are actually a type of plant that doesnt come from the ground like sweet potatoes dothey come out of the stem of another kind of vine plant, called Dioscorea.

True yams contain more fiber than sugar starch, while sweet potatoes have more sugar than fiber. Yams are found mainly in Asia, Africa, South America, and Southern parts of the United States. Yams have thick, bumpy, fibrous brown skin and a creamy white color inside that is similar to that of yucca.

Dog Treats – Sweet Potato Dog Biscuit Recipe – GardenFork

I rarely make human cookies, but making dog biscuits makes me feel so accomplished and, truth be told, I love spoiling my dog with something made just for him. I hesitated to call these brownies though since theyre really more of a thin, dense cake. Since theyre super moist, they dont have the longest shelf life. I usually freeze half the batch and pull them out as needed.

Why Do You Need Xylitol

This 4 ingredient Sweet Potato Dog Treats recipe will earn guaranteed ...

Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs. Even small amounts of xylitol can cause hypoglycemia , seizures, liver failure or even death in dogs. If you see xylitol listed as an ingredient, dont buy that peanut butter to give to your dog. Fortunately, only a few off-brand peanut butters use xylitol as an ingredient in their peanut butter. The best kind of peanut butter to use for your dog should have the following ingredients: peanuts and salt. If its not a natural peanut butter, it will have some added ingredients like sugar, etc. You can still use brands like Jif and Skippy . But if you plan to feed your dog a little bit of peanut butter now and then, its best to use the natural type.

    Can Dogs Eat Sweet Potatoes

I chatted with my vet before I made these Sweet Potato Dog Chews and got the thumbs up, with the caveat that these are snacks and not her primary diet. Per our vets recommendation, Flora is on a grain-based diet, important for the amino acids, which grains are rich in.

Supplementing her grain-based diet with Sweet Potato treats is not only just o.k. but actually good for her. Sweet Potatoes are rich in Vitamins A, B6, C and calcium, potassium, and iron the benefit they have for humans is the same benefits for our puppers.

All that being said, it is not recommended for dogs to eat raw sweet potatoes. Dried, dehydrated and cooked sweet potatoes are much more digestible for dogs. These sweet potato dog chews are ideal as a nice treat for your pooch.

So, back to these yummy and healthy chews:

Truly, its just a matter of slicing your sweet potatoes and drying/dehydrating them in either your dehydrator or your oven. That being said, the thickness that you slice them is important. Too thin, you end up with sweet potato chips and too thick, and you have sweet potato leather/rubber.

    Fish Paws: Sardine Muffins

The main ingredient in these easy-to-chew dog treats is a can of sardines ! The tiny fish sure do pack a big flavor kick that most dogs seem to love. Plus, sardines are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, making them beneficial to your pups health. I always know a recipe loaded with good-for-your-dog ingredients is a winner when I pull a tray out of the oven and my dogs immediately start sitting, wagging their paws toward me, spinning around in circles, and pulling out all of their other cute tricks. They will do just about anything to get a nibble!

To Make Easy Diy Sweet Potato Dog Chews:

Super Simple Sweet Potato Dog Treats Photos

Take 2 sweet potatoes. Or you could do just 1, or 7, or however many you like! I found that 1 sweet potato took up about 1 baking sheet, so I did two baking sheets worth.

Slice them up. I sliced mine into coins because Chickpea is only a medium-little dog, but if you have a bigger dog you could slice them lengthwise for larger chews. You don’t want the pieces to be too thin or they will just get crispy and not chewy. So make sure they are no thinner than ¼ inch .

I use the mandoline attachment on my food processor so it took about 7 seconds to slice the potatoes.

Lay them all out on parchment paper-lined baking sheets in a single layer.

Then just pop the little dudes in the oven for 2 ½ to 3 hours flipping once half way through until they are shrunken, dried out, and some pieces are a bit crispy, while others are a bit chewy. Let cool, then store in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.

    Bon Appetegan, pooches!
