Serving Canned Cranberry Sauce

Leda’s Urban Homestead – How to Make Jellied Cranberry Sauce

The most traditional way of serving canned cranberry sauce is sliced into rounds. Begin by slicing the canned cranberry sauce into ¼-inch thick rounds. For an added personal touch, use cookie cutters to cut out cute fall shapes. Arrange the slices on a serving platter, then try one of these suggested toppings.

Why Make Homemade Cranberry Sauce

For my family, cranberry sauce is an absolute must to serve with our holiday turkey! I like to serve two kinds – this jellied sauce and a whole berry cranberry sauce.

Making your own cranberry sauce isn’t difficult. The hardest part is staining the cranberries and it just takes a bit of time pushing all the pulp through a fine meshed strainer.

When a recipe only calls for two ingredients, and no high fructose corn syrup like the canned varieties, you will want to want to make this yourself!

Cranberries naturally are high in pectin and when you cook cranberries, that pectin is released. Pectin allows the sauce to thicken and hold its shape. I placed my sauce into a small jelly jar and then refrigerated it.

When ready to use, I simply slide a butter knife around the edges and had a perfectly shaped jellied cranberry sauce!

My sister is a bit of a fanatic about her canned cranberry sauce, but I’m thinking I might be able to convert her with this homemade variety!

How To Make The Cranberry Swirl

Be sure to not get close to the cake batter edge. Leave at least a 1/2-inch space to the border. If you add less cranberry sauce, you could gently give it a swirl with a butter knife when you add the 2nd part of cake batter. Ive made it both ways: with a swirl and without. And sometimes it creates its own swirly design even without me touching it.

Leftover Cranberry Sauce Bars

Jellied Cranberry Sauce

These Leftover Cranberry Sauce Bars are the perfect post holiday treat everyone will love. Dont toss your leftover cranberry sauce, re-purpose it as the filling for these oat bars! Simple, delicious and kid friendly!

This year my big kick is how to use up leftover Holiday food.

Every year we celebrate these big fancy meals with our entire families.

There is a giant bird, possibly a ham as well, plus no less than 8 side dishes.

We each scoop a small portion of each side and the bird as well as the ham and then declare ourselves full.

Having done this, there tends to be a LOT of leftovers.

The average person LOVES leftovers.

They will eat their big meal one or two more times, however there are STILL more leftovers.

Leftovers that are looking less and less appealing as the days go by.

Instead of intending to eat them and never actually eating them, Ive done my best to recreate those leftovers into new delicious recipes.

One of the hardest to use up and the least enjoyed it seems, is Cranberry Sauce.

Some people love it straight out of the can.

Others like to make a fancy cranberry sauce because it pairs well with that giant bird on the table.

However what do you do with leftover cranberry sauce?

In past years weve enjoyed it with our leftovers but still end up tossing at least half of it because its just not eaten.

This year, dont toss it.

Re-purpose it into these Leftover Cranberry Sauce Bars.

Our goal is to keep the cranberry sauce from being tossed.

Besides, you can make it in the glass container and serve it. I just thought it looked delightful when I made it in the large muffin tin. It seemed approachable since most people do have muffin or cupcake tins.

What was I thinking?! Well, In my defense it looked cute and it was not all that hard to take it out. Just dip the bottom in the hot water, take a butter knife and go around, then flip on the platter.

Garnish with extra oranges, fresh cranberries, and pomegranate. Perhaps, a few rosemary sprigs or any other similar herbs.

I made my own sugar cranberries. You just have to boil cranberries in one cup of water and 1/2 cup of sugar for 2-3 minutes. Take them out with the slotted spoon.

Allow them to cool down for 5 to 10 minutes, then dip into sugar. Thats it! A simple yet looks so decorative with cranberry sauce.

Canned cranberry sauce is household tradition, and for good reason. There’s really no reason to make homemade if your family has been enjoying the slices of store-bought canned cranberry sauce for years. But what is in canned cranberry sauce?

Canned cranberry sauce is made with fresh cranberries that are cooked in water, sweetened, cooked again until the berries have broken down, and poured into cans. Ingredients typically include cranberries, corn syrup, water, and citric acid . Interestingly, canned cranberry sauce does not contain gelatin or pectin because cranberries themselves have a high pectin content.

Homemade Jellied Cranberry Sauce Is Easier Than You Think

Don’s Jellied Cranberry Sauce is my favorite cranberry sauce. Before I met Don, I didn’t like the whole cranberry made-at-home kind of cranberry sauce. Our family always bought the canned version. You know, the wiggly, jellied type that people simply dump out of the can. I must admit, I still like that kind, too. But Don’s Homemade Jellied Cranberry Sauce is a must at our Thanksgiving table.

The recipe is a variation of the one from the Ocean Spray cranberry bag. We usually buy two bags of Organic Frozen Whole Cranberries before Thanksgiving and freeze one to save it for Christmas.

Growing up we always had it.

When I still ate meat no Thanksgiving sandwich was complete without Miracle Whip and jellied cranberry sauce.

So a few years ago I started just baking in straight into the bread.

Now our sandwiches are filled with stuffing and corn casserole instead of turkey but I still have to have the Miracle Whip and the cranberry.

This Jellied Cranberry Sauce Bread works great as sandwich bread and it works really good as French Toast.

Just make regular French toast custard but add the zest of one orange and 2 TBSP of frozen orange concentrate.

    So good.

I made my loaf as a twist bread but suggest that you make just a plain bread loaf like you would for sandwiches.

The choice to cut open the loaf and twist it was for visual effect only for the blog.

I normally just make it as sandwich bread.

Because I use it as sandwich bread.
