  • How Crohns Disease Affects Nutrition

A little backstory: Your small and large intestines each have a specific task to do. Foods and beverages travel through the small intestine first, where vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients are absorbed. When whats left arrives in the large intestine, also known as the colon, it sucks up the excess water and salt from the waste material before converting it to stool.

When you have Crohns disease, however, these organs stop doing their job. The inflamed small intestine isnt able to fully digest food, so you lose out on both macronutrients like proteins, carbs, and fats , and micronutrients, which are the vitamins and minerals your body needs. As a result, incompletely digested food then travels on to the colon, causing diarrhea. If your colon is also affected by Crohns disease, it struggles to absorb water, and that excess liquid joins the diarrhea and creates the urgent need to go to the bathroom.

All of which is to say, even if youre eating healthy, during a Crohns flare, many of those good nutrients go to wasteliterally. Add to that the fact that your body needs more calories than usual during a flare, and youve got a recipe for malnutrition, which can lead to weight loss and a list of health issues. A 2020 review in the journal Nutrients reported that 20% to 40% of outpatients with Crohns Disease experienced weight loss. People at greatest risk for malnutrition are those who:

Crohn’s Disease Diet: Which Foods To Eat And Which To Avoid

Featured Recipe:Peanut Butter and Banana Breakfast Sandwich

More than 1.6 million Americans are living with inflammatory bowel disease . IBD takes two forms, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. While they are categorized under one broad description, the two conditions vary widely in their symptoms-and in how food affects them.

The nutrition strategy for people with IBD is important, as food can make symptoms worse or help alleviate them. However, the strategy must be individualized, and it should be recognized that there is no single diet recommendation for individuals with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. For that reason, it’s important to work with a dietary support team that includes a gastroenterologist and registered dietitian when developing a treatment plan for these inflammatory conditions.

    Herbal Remedies And Supplements

There are lots of supplements that claim to treat Crohns and Colitis. But there isnt enough evidence to recommend any herbal remedies or supplements. This is because its difficult to know whether the supplement is directly affecting a persons Crohns or Colitis or whether something else is causing a change in symptoms. Also, everyone is different so what helps one person may not help another. Some people find that some herbal remedies, such as aloe vera or curcumin , help them manage their symptoms when they use them together with their prescribed medicines. There have been reports of cannabidiol , an ingredient in cannabis, helping with symptoms like diarrhoea, pain and loss of appetite. But we dont know enough about how it works or how much is a safe amount to take. It isnt currently recommended and isnt available on prescription for people with Crohns or Colitis. There have been claims in the media about the benefits of kefir a fermented milk drink that contains probiotics. But there isnt any medical evidence to show that it helps people with Crohns or Colitis. If you want to take herbal remedies, its important to speak to your IBD team or dietitian first. Dont stop taking your prescribed medicine without talking to your IBD team, even if your symptoms improve.

I think it is so important to remember that the relationship with food and IBD is so different for everyone!

    Inflammatory Bowel Disease Management

Inflammatory bowel disease is not caused, nor can it be cured, by what you eat. Doctors and dietitians agree, however, that food may play some role in the underlying inflammatory process that causes IBD symptoms.

Certain foods may aggravate symptoms, while others may calm them and promote healing. Therefore, paying attention to what you eat and how your body responds to different foods is an important component of a total treatment plan for IBD.

A diet plan can supplement but should never replace medical treatment for IBD. Always take your medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

    Crohn

Making changes to your diet may help you manage some common symptoms of Crohns and Colitis, such as loose and runny stools, dehydration, bloating, wind, constipation, weight loss, tiredness, nausea and vomiting and pain. While changing your diet can help you manage your symptoms, it doesnt replace the medical treatment suggested by your IBD team.

    Loose and runny stools

A common symptom of Crohns and Colitis is loose and runny stools, called diarrhoea. For some people, their diet has no effect on their diarrhoea. Others find that avoiding certain foods helps. You could use the food diary above to help you find out which foods might be causing your symptoms. Foods which sometimes make diarrhoea worse include spicy or fatty foods, high fibre foods, foods containing gluten and dairy foods. Drinks containing caffeine, sweeteners or alcohol can also make diarrhoea worse.Your IBD team or dietitian can advise you on how to manage your diarrhoea. They will want to make sure youre eating and drinking enough to get all the nutrients you need and to stay hydrated. In some cases, they may recommend medicines to help. Our guide Diarrhoea and constipation has more information about what causes diarrhoea and possible treatments.

    Dehydration

You may also want to work with your doctor or dietitian to work through an elimination diet. Generally, you should try to:

  • Relax! Exercise and relaxation techniques can help you relax and alleviate your Crohn’s Disease symptoms
  • Use simple cooking techniques. We recommend baking, grilling, or steaming to preserve most food’s nutrient content
  • In terms of specific food recommendations, go with these:

  • feeling short of breath
  • fast or irregular heartbeat
