Recipe for Reading from EPS is a research-based, multisensory, phonics-based reading curriculum that features intervention strategies for struggling readers in grades K-6 or beginning readers in grades K-3. It can be used as a core reading program or as a supplement it is an Orton-Gillingham based program and was initially developed for use with dyslexic students. Children who progress through the program will learn consonant sounds, digraphs, consonant blends, diphthongs, short/long vowels, inflectional endings, suffixes, and spelling rules. Incorporating visual, auditory, and kinesthetic techniques, this program is ideal for differentiated instruction.

The program is centered on the Recipe for Reading Teachers Manual. It contains a series of structured lessons that cover the entire Recipe for Reading program. Nonsense words force the students to use decoding and not memorization skills. The phonogram cards are separated into three piles on a table top. The vowels are put in the middle of the pile.

    OrtonGillingham is a well-regarded approach to teaching kids with reading issues. Thats why many classroom teachers use OrtonGillinghamtype strategies in their reading instruction. Having students walk around the floor in the pattern of a letter, for instance, is an activity inspired by OrtonGillingham.

    But reading specialists use the approach and programs influenced by it more comprehensively with students who have dyslexia and other reading issues. Some schools provide OrtonGillinghamlike instruction through a students IEP or response to intervention.

    The major finding in Ritchey and Goekes review revealed the research was simply insufficient, in the number of studies conducted and study quality, to support OG instruction as an evidence-based practice. Nearly 15 years later, the results of this meta-analysis suggest OG interventions do not statistically significantly improve foundational skill outcomes or vocabulary and reading comprehension outcomes for students with or at risk for WLRD over and above comparison condition instruction. Despite the finding that effects were not statistically significant, we interpret a mean effect of 0.22 as indicating promise that OG may positively impact student outcomes. For students with significant WLRD, who often demonstrate limited response to early reading interventions , 0.22 may be indicative of educationally meaningful reading progress. However, until a sufficient number of high-quality research studies exist, we echo the cautionary recommendation provided in that initial review: Despite the continued widespread acceptance, use, and support for OG instruction, there is little evidence to date that these interventions significantly improve reading outcomes for students with or at risk for WLRD over and above comparison group instruction.
